ACC
Duke
Duke is returning to a helmet design that was last worn in 2018 with an all-white helmet featuring a white facemask. The Blue Devils have also removed the blue stripe off the helmet, but look for the team to mix and max helmet colors and designs.
Georgia Tech
GT has retired their excellent first set of Adidas uniforms for what can only be described as a failed attempt at an amazing design. Tech attempted to return to the classic striped jerseys and pants, but, in typical Adidas fashion, they missed the mark in many ways. The base design looks good, but the mismatch of gold shades and the unfortunate use of the chrome gold really hurt this look. It’s even more disappointing when compared to the old set.
Louisville
The Cardinals have released a new grey alternate uniform that they’re dubbing “Iron Wings.” The new design features the same base design as the primary uniforms but with “The Ville” wordmark placed on the chest.
Miami (FL)
Continuing their annual tradition, Miami has introduced a new one-off alternate uniform. The new “Miami Nights” all-black threads feature what looks to be glow-in-the-dark aspects on the numbers and trim. The shoulder caps showcase a unique line-art design of a palm tree blowing in the winds of a hurricane. The helmet bumper includes the script Miami text that the Heat have used at times. The logo originally ordained the Miami Arena that was home to the Heat until 1999.
Virginia
The Cavilers have worn one of the best uniforms in the conference in the last few years. The biggest detractor was always the asymmetric helmet design, featuring the V-sword logo on one side and the player number on the other. For 2022, Virginia will return the V logo to both sides of the shell and replace the grey facemask with a navy mask. The beautiful stripes look like they may have been removed, according to a team hype video.
Virginia Tech
The Hokies have also tweaked their helmets this year. The maroon helmet is a classic case of addition by subtraction, as removing the tapering stripes brings Tech back to a classic look. The team’s white helmets have new traditional stripes, also replacing the tapering stripes.
American
Tulsa
In December, Tulsa announced a new tweak to the primary logo. A rather small change overall, the biggest difference is the removal of the two outlines.
Many programs have added fun additions to their helmets with new warning decal designs, and Tulsa is getting in on the fun this year. The Golden Hurricane will wear Oklahoma-shaped decals with the standard warning text on the inside.
UCF
Three new uniforms this season for the Knights. The base design stays the same with the collar and sleeve cuffs now matching the jersey color. The pants now feature three stars on the hip. The pegasus logo on the shoulder caps is now slightly larger than previously. The best change is the new number font that better fits UCF. The Knights also have a second black uniform that showcases gold numbers and details rather than white like the primaries. The “Knightmode” uniform also swaps the pegasus logo for the knight head logo on the shoulders.
UCF will also debut another space-themed uniform later in the season.
USF
South Florida has continued to bounce between simple and outlandish uniforms their entire history. This year, the Bulls are reverting to a simpler look, one that harkens back to the program’s successful 2008 season. The new uniforms feature a gold helmet with either green or white jerseys and pants. Don’t be surprised to see another set of slime green or black uniforms or helmets.
Big 12
Texas
No more shoulder numbers or giant logo on the chest for the Longhorns.
West Virginia
I think it’s required to sing some John Denver when viewing these uniforms. The Mountaineers are sporting brand new Country Roads alternate uniforms for their season-opening rivalry game against Pitt. The new threads feature the classic WV-state logo on the helmets with yellow/blue/yellow stripes. All the blue details in the stripes, numbers, shoulder caps, and collar sport the road maps of the state.
Big 10
Illinois
With promises of new uniforms next year, the Illini have made some minor tweaks to their helmets. New 3D bumpers, chinstrap decals, and even some hardware changes. The Fighting Illini have also installed a brand new turf field. The design stays similar to the last carpet but includes “FamILLy” in the boundaries.
Minnesota
PJ Fleck continues to wreak havoc on football uniforms. The Golden Gophers revealed a new set of black uniforms that are similar to the dark grey anthracite threads worn in recent years. Minnesota also revealed a similar black uniform last year that was slightly different. The biggest change here is that the white numbers (gross, never for the Golden Gophers) are trimmed with maroon, not gold. The reveal video also showcased a new helmet design featuring a black and chrome maroon M on one side and a black Goldy face on the other. While the Gophers have worn the asymmetric design many times before, they haven’t done so in this color combination on a white shell previously.
Nebraska
The Huskers will be throwing it back to the 1983 season with throwback uniforms. The jerseys replace the TV numbers with the N logo and add fake mesh into the numbers. The pants regain their double stripes, too. No word when this one will be worn. When Nebraska does break them out, they’ll be doing so on a brand-new turf field.
Northwestern
When Northwestern first joined Under Armour in 2012, the Wildcats campaigned to take back their stripes. Since then, Northwestern Stripes were placed on the chest and the back of the jerseys underneath the player numbers. This year will mark the first departure from that base design as the Wildcats have moved the stripes to the sleeves. It’s a solid look overall, but there was something unique about the chest placement that I’ll personally miss.
Ohio State
The Buckeyes will be sporting their black alternate uniforms this season against Wisconsin on September 24th and their all-red uniforms on October 22nd against Iowa. Also, Ohio Stadium has a new turf field. The new carpet will feature updated endzone text, the Buckeyes stripes in the back of the endzone, and buckeye decals in place of the X on the 35-yardlines.
Purdue
While we await to see if rumors of new Boilermaker uniforms are on the way, the team did announce that they will wear Purdue Pete helmet decals for the homecoming game against FAU on September 24, 2022.
Wisconsin
Camp Randall Stadium has a new turf field for 2022. The new design has thicker out-of-bounds lines than the older look and features “Barry Alvarez Field” on the border.
C-USA
Florida International
FIU has long been one of the teams that most desperately needed a uniform refresh. After carrying outdated uniforms and templates for many years, the Panthers finally have a new set. The jewel of the new threads is the new navy helmet that features a ton of gold flake. The white helmets feature the panther head logo but remove the stripes that were previously worn. The new jerseys feature a UTSA-like feature with the panther head logo being placed on the shoulder caps in a way that just the eyes peek over the cuffs.
North Texas
The Mean Green will sport new white uniforms that feature a nice wing texture in their beautiful green numbers.
UAB
The Blazers’ first head coach, Jim Hilyer, passed away in January. In his honor, UAB will wear memorial decals on their helmets all season long.
Western Kentucky
The Hilltoppers have added a black helmet to the lineup with a number of different design possibilities.
MAC
Akron
The Zips have released a new school-wide branding that unifies all the athletic teams. The new logo set unfortunately retires a lot of the classic kangaroo marks and the school is, unfortunately, retiring the beautiful script that has been worn in recent years. The primary A logo isn’t the great mark and it’s odd that the rest of the logo set doesn’t mimic the A’s design.
With the new branding naturally brings updated turf and uniforms. The new A replaces the script logo on the helmets and the roo head on the jerseys.
Central Michigan
Major downgrade for the Chippewas as the team has replaced their striped yellow pants. The new pants feature the team’s slogan “Fire Up!” on the side.
Ohio
Yet another team with a new turf field. The Bobcats’ biggest change to the field design is with the endzone letting.
Toledo
The Rockets have replaced their angled-stripe uniforms with a much simpler approach. While the old set was a more interesting look, the new uniforms help Toledo differentiate a bit more from conference rival Bowling Green, who wore the same template design.
Mountain West
Air Force
It’s hard to beat the service academies and their alternate uniforms. Air Force knocked it out of the park once again this year with their Space Force unis. The uniforms are all grey with blue details, but the true winner here is the blue helmet. These will be worn against Navy on October 1st.
Air Force also introduced a new falcon logo that harkens back to a vintage design.
Hawaii
The Warriors have removed the “tapa” helmet stripes in favor of new “manawa” feathers down the center. New “Hulu Moa” (chicken feather) award decals will be given to players based on their performance. Offensive players will be awarded white decals while defensive players can earn black decals “as a nod to King Kamehameha’s white and black stones, which represented being on the offensive or defensive in battle.” Like many things in Hawaii’s culture, this new helmet design is deeply based in meaning, legend, and storytelling. The team has held educational meetings to inform each of the players about every aspect of the design and what meanings they hold.
Nevada
The Wolfpack has revealed three newly updated helmet designs. Each fixes the primary problem plaguing Nevada’s uniforms – asymmetric helmet designs. The new silver helmet includes a ton of silver flake to sparkle in the lights. The matte navy and silver shells feature chrome wolf head decals while the white lid has the great Pack script logo.
San Diego State
The Aztecs are celebrating their 100th season this season and will sport the anniversary logo on their jerseys.
Utah State
Out are the incredibly unique stripes and in are simple double stripes on the Aggies’ new white uniforms. The new uniforms look good but it’s difficult to advocate for dumping such a unique feature of your team’s uniforms.
PAC 12
Arizona
New turf for the Wildcats, where the only change appears to be the battle cry “Bear Down” being moved from behind the midfield logo to the boundaries.
Arizona State
Another year another wild alternate uniform for the Sun Devils. This year’s crazy look will include an all-tan uniform to “connect to the desert landscape” with a fun script Sun Devils wordmark on the chest. The numbers (which are freaking massive) and the chestmark both are yellow as the helmet features the same script in a yellow-to-maroon gradient to represent the area’s sunsets. In better news, ASU showcased a new helmet combination at media days that hasn’t been worn before.
Utah
The Utes have added the school’s student section logo to their front bumpers.
Washington
The Huskies are resurrecting their gold chrome helmets for the first time since 2017 when they pair them with a new white road uniform. The new threads feature chrome gold numbers and stripes on the jerseys and pants. Washington has not announced what game the “Husky Royalty” uniforms will be worn.
SEC
Auburn
Minor tweak this season for the Tigers who have removed the 3D bumpers in place for old-school decals that have navy text outlined in orange.
Georgia
Georgia introduced a new “Bulldogs Bold” font in 2013 but is now reverting back to a traditional block font on their uniforms. The new jersey set also includes the return of a black jersey.
A white helmet was often used for recruiting photos, but they will not be worn for a game. Georgia has recently used blank unstriped pants for photos that were simply purchased and had the G logo slapped on.
Mississippi State
The Bulldogs will be honoring Frank Dowsing and Robert Bell, the first two black players in team history, when they play host to Bowling Green on September 24th. The uniform design harkens back to the 1968 and 1969 seasons when Dowsing and Bell played. The helmets feature a single maroon stripe with a vintage-inspired MS insignia. The jerseys have “MISS. STATE” arching on the front chest, reminiscent of the practice jerseys that the two men wore during their time. The school also created a special logo to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the two joining the program.
Missouri
Mizzou has added a new gold jersey to match the black and white colorways introduced last year.
Tennessee
Tennessee dropped the news that the love-em or hate-em Smokey Grey uniforms will return this season. The original design with the shoulder yoke and mountain helmets from 2017 will be worn in 2022 with new designs coming in subsequent seasons. Neyland Stadium also got a small upgrade as the spectacular VOLS sign returns to glory.
Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt revealed a new school-wide branding in March. The new logos feel like a downgrade compared to the classic V-star logo. The team did sport new uniforms last season, so it will be interesting to see how they update those to match the new brand. The Commodores will sport new white helmets in their season opener this weekend at Hawaii. And you have to love the Nashville skyline warning decals on the back.
Sun Belt
Marshall
After allowing a fan vote, Marshall’s new turf field will feature black endzones.
Southern Miss
The Golden Eagles have replaced the double tapering stripe decals on their helmets with more traditional stripes – a solid upgrade. Southern Miss has also swapped out the C-USA patch with the Sun Belt patch to coincide with their conference move.
Troy
For the first time since 2015, the Trojans will have black helmets available. With many decal options available, Troy will be sporting many different looks this season.
Independent
BYU
The Cougars’ beautiful royal blue helmets have received an upgrade, moving from a matte finish to a traditional glossy finish.
Notre Dame
The Irish are continuing their Shamrock Series alternate uniforms with a new design for the October 8th matchup against BYU in Las Vegas. The new uniforms “compliments the Golden Age of Las Vegas” (yes, you can roll your eyes) with gold details all over. The shoulders feature an ornate line-art of the famous Golden Dome on campus. The shoulder caps have a shamrock with a similar stained glass look. It’s unfortunate that the pants are blank rather than carrying the stained glass look.
Notre Dame will also be wearing green jerseys for their September 19th game against Cal. And to wrap it up, the team has installed a new turf field at their stadium. It retains the same design from before except the number font has been changed.
FCS
Austin Peay
The Governors have replaced their old turf field with a new one. The midfield logo changes from the full head logo to the Tennessee state Governor logo. The endzone font changed and the field name and logo are placed at the 25-yardlines.
Brown
Brown has released a new logo set that trades the classic ivy and bear head logo for a standing bear silhouette. The block B logo is promoted to primary status as well. No visuals yet for how the football team will update their uniforms and field with the new branding.
Central Arkansas
The Bears will have a new set of decals to use on their white helmets with the team nickname in a beautiful script. It’s the first time UCA has not featured their bear head logo on the helmets since 2009 when they were a Division II team.
Citadel
After debuting a new logo set last year, The Citadel has released new football uniforms. The new UCLA stripes look incredible in the Bulldogs’ blue, so much better than the previous uniforms.
Delaware
The Fightin’ Blue Hens have dumped their old white uniforms for a new set of throwback-inspired uniforms. The jerseys feature a traditional stripe on the shoulder and fake mesh on the numbers and wordmark while the pants are stripe-less with the hen head logo on the hips.
East Tennessee State
ETSU has added a beautiful white helmet to the rotation as an alternate design from the navy lids.
Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb has been rocking the same logos since the 1960s but now has a brand new refreshed look. The football team will also wear two different helmets this season. It marks the first time in the program’s 94-year history that they will have two shell colors to pick from in the same season.
Illinois State
Can’t be the Red Birds without a red helmet. ISU is sporting a new matte red helmet for the first time since 1979. The team has worn white helmets in every game since 1980, with the standard bird head logo donning the shells consistently since 1996.
Livingstone
The Blue Bears will live up to their name with a new light blue turf field at their renovated stadium.
North Alabama
The UNA Lions have revealed a new set of logos to coincide with the promotion to full Division I status. The three-time Division II national champion has seemingly done away with gold as it is no longer visible in their logo set.
North Carolina A&T
Can’t imagine the NCAA would be very fond of this design. The Aggies will be sporting a new uniform in which the jerseys themselves fade from yellow to white. Thankfully it was revealed with matching white pants. Can’t imagine they will be able to mix and match this jersey with much else.
Rhode Island
The Rams have made a small tweak to their primary interlocking logo, beefing the outlines. URI also introduced a new ram head logo, which feels like a downgrade compared to the previous mark.
Saint Francis
The Red Flash wear black helmets and have changed their design from the SFU logo to Chargers-like lightning strikes.
Southland Conference
New logo to celebrate the conference’s 60th anniversary. No word if the 10-member schools will wear the logo on their uniforms.
Utah Tech
The once Dixie State University has undergone a school-wide name change to Utah Tech. The football team has updated their helmets and field turf to reflect the change. The Trailblazers’ uniforms have not been shown, but they previously wore Dixie State across the chest. Imagine, if anything, the chest text would be updated.
VMI
The Keydets have added their first white helmet since 1998. VMI looks to be adding it as an alternate design to compliment the gold helmets worn since 1999.
Division II
Bentley
The Falcons have refreshed their primary logo, removing the split shield and beveling on the B. The football team will also be sporting new white and blue uniforms this season.
Central Washington
The Wildcats have a new red helmet this season. It’s the first time since 2013 that the shell was red and the first time in program history to use the CWU with the wildcat head logo on the helmets. Central had worn black helmets with player numbers on one side.
Hillsdale
The Chargers have a new primary logo, moving from a rather unique look to a cookie-cutter horse head logo.
Rockey Mountain Athletic Conference
Massive upgrade for RMAC which has redesigned its logo.
Division III
Allegheny
A beautiful new set of logos for the Gators. They can’t go wrong adding either of those logos to the football helmet.
Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference
The 14-team NACC will have a new logo for the upcoming season.
Wilkes
The Colonels have revealed new yellow, navy, and white uniforms that dump the UCLA stripes of the previous set.
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
A conference with nothing but University of Wisconsin campuses. Interesting. Anyways, the WIAC has updated their logo with a new font. They’ve even added a great set of sport-specific logos.
Football season is just days away! Tune in this weekend for Week 0 and next week for the rest of the country. Keep this list close by so you can be the one to point out all the new uniforms, helmets, and logos!
Thanks as always to all the teams and equipment managers for sharing the images of their respective new uniforms. Thanks also to Uni-Watch, SportsLogos.net, and College Sports Logos for helping showcase all the new details.
