2021 CFB Uniform Roundup
/0 Comments/by Clint RichardsonThe best time of year quickly approaches once again. The college football season is on the horizon – it’s almost here!
As is tradition here at the Auburn Uniform Database, it’s time to break down every single uniform, field, and logo change for the upcoming season. We tackle every single level of NCAA football, from the Power 5 conferences through Division III, so long as we were able to find the news.

ACC
For many years now, all ACC teams have worn the conference logo on the nose bumper, the front white padded area where the facemask meets the helmet shell. Teams are no longer required to follow suit, so you will see many ACC programs introducing their own branding back to the front bumper this season.
Boston College
As Under Armour’s financial situation creates more turmoil, more teams continue to jump ship. Boston College made the move to New Balance for the majority of teams over the summer, but that deal didn’t include football. The football team signed a shorter deal with Adidas. As the Eagles announced the Adidas deal in late April, that didn’t leave much time to design and create uniforms that were anything more than incredibly simple. Because of that, BC will be sporting white and maroon jerseys that feature the throwback logo on the sleeves and chest.
It looks as though the helmets will remain sans-stripe and logo, which is a shame as the single red stripe is such a good look. The shell itself has received a slight makeover, going with a richer shade of gold.
Despite the simplistic look, expect to see a full redesign next season once Adidas has time to create something new for the Eagles.
Clemson
Clemson will have a new 3D front bumper on their helmets this year now that the ACC logo has been removed across the league. Even though it would probably be logo overkill with the rest of the uniform, I’d still love to see a 3D tiger paw here instead.
Duke
Repping Bull City on the front bumpers. (image via Duke Football)
The Blue Devils’ new front bumper will feature the “Bull City” hand sign, an ode to Durham’s nickname.
Florida State
The Seminoles will be celebrating their 75th anniversary this season. FSU announced that the commemorative logo will be on display around the stadium, but there is no confirmation that the team will wear the logo yet. The team will also be wearing “Noles” on the front bumpers if practice photos are anything to go off of.
With legendary head coach Bobby Bowden passing away on August 8th, expect the team to wear a memorial patch or decal in his honor. The women’s soccer team is already wearing a patch with Bowden’s familiar hat and signature.
Georgia Tech
Rather than adding a school-specific logo to their helmet bumpers, Georgia Tech is going all-in on their Atlanta-based branding. The new ATL bumpers highlight the T for Tech in a contrasting color.
Uni-Watch reported that the Yellow Jackets will continue to wear the social justice unity patch from last year.
Louisville
After a five-year stint as the Miami Hurricane’s coach, Howard Schnellenberger spent a decade coaching Louisville’s football team. The Cardinals will wear a memorial decal on their helmets all season with other special celebrations scheduled throughout the year.

Miami (FL)
The Hurricanes will honor legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger with a memorial decal on the back of their helmets this season
Miami has also made a few small tweaks to the jerseys. The U logo at the collar is now placed in a badge as it previously warped during the game. The number change also changed from a block font to a classic Miami look. Oddly enough, both tweaks mimic the Nike days for the Canes.
The front bumper on the helmets will also have the school name.
NC State
NC State has enjoyed playing around with different helmet designs over the past few years. Old logos like Tuffy have been brought back to much fanfare. This year, the Wolfpack are going another step and sporting the “Slobbering Wolf” logo that looks like it’s straight out of a classic early Mickey Mouse cartoon.
The logo looks incredible on the helmet, which features a new red shell with thin black lines that are meant to mimic the red bricks used throughout the campus’s architecture. The brick lines feel a bit overbearing in the close-up photos. I’m curious to see how noticeable they are on camera during the game.
North Carolina
UNC has replaced the conference logo on the front bumper with the Tar Hell logo.
Pittsburgh
Pitt has had some notable uniform-related items over the last few years. The new throwback colors and script logo were brought back a few years ago, then the blue pants were leaked when a coach dressed up in full uniform for a scare prank video. And now a recruit leaked new white pants.
The Panthers have worn yellow pants since the rebrand and of course added blue trousers soon after. Now, white leggings return. Oddly enough, the panther head logo is placed on the hip – like most team logos – but is comically small in size. It’s unfortunate that these white trousers don’t carry the same stripes as the other designs.
American
Cincinnati
The Bearcats have replaced the turf at Nippert Stadium and will include permanent black endzones for the first time in program history.
East Carolina
After a few years wearing a uniform with unique pirate-related icons, East Carolina has scrubbed them entirely from their newest uniforms.
The Pirates are going back to basics with much simpler threads. The jerseys come in purple and white (for now) with the pirate head logo on the shoulders. Pants are available in purple, white, and yellow with large stripes down the legs. The yellow pants are the best of the bunch, but it’s clear ECU will be mixing these elements throughout the year.
East Carolina has been happy to add new uniforms and helmet designs in the past, so don’t be surprised if you see new elements introduced during the season.
Houston
The Cougars have a new 75th-anniversary logo for the season. It has yet to be seen if it will be worn on the uniforms, however.
Navy
Navy will finally don Marine-inspired uniforms this year. (image via Navy Football)
The military academies have always shown out when it comes to special occasion uniforms. Navy will shine once again this season as they wear US Marine Corps.-inspired uniforms for their September 11th matchup against Air Force.
The uniforms will resemble the Marine’s Dress Blues, with a navy jersey and with pants in a lighter shade of blue. The blue is accented by the standard red and tan across the uniform. The helmets come in white with navy facemasks with the Marines logo on one side, player number on the back. The logo is also placed on the pants and shoulders of the jersey. The helmets feature a really nice detail on the top that mimics the braids on top of the Dress Blues’ caps.
Navy will go all-in on the Marine theming with Semper Fi being placed on the nameplate and rear bumper, while the iconic “oo-rah” battle cry adorns the front bumper.
The Marine uniforms will be worn against Air Force for the September 11th game which so happens to be the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Air Force will also sport special uniforms for the game.
The Midshipmen have also made adjustments to their primary uniforms, moving over to Under Armour’s latest “file tab” template. With the change comes longer shoulder stripes, a larger chestmark, and the TV numbers being replaced with the anchor logo.
SMU
SMU struck gold with their City of Dallas uniforms that debuted in 2019. Now, the Mustangs have a matching blue set to be worn at home.
The new blue tops sadly don’t carry the same shoulder stripes as the white colorway. The biggest difference otherwise is the number font. The white style has a blocker style while the new tops have a rounded font with notches. These new jerseys look really nice but it’s tough to think they wouldn’t look better as a complete copy of the white versions.
Tulsa
New 3D bumpers this year for the Golden Hurricanes. The front bumper will have the school name rather than the hurricane warning double-red flags. The backside will have “Hurricanes.” Tulsa previously had blank rear bumpers, a rarity in the sport nowadays.
UCF
UCF has really taken hold of being a “space school” as the university was founded in conjunction with NASA. Each season since 2017, the football team has sported new space-themed uniforms. This year will be the 5th edition with the mission name “Discovery.”
The Knights typically unveil the uniform design a week or two before the game, so keep an eye out for photos in early October.
Big 12
Iowa State
Minor tweak for the Cyclones as they’ve added the Jack Trice vertical striping pattern to the front bumpers. Iowa State has worn throwback uniforms with the pattern in the past.

Texas
The newest SEC member Texas Longhorns have replaced the turf at their stadium. The new carpet includes the state of Texas behind the midfield logo, though it may not be very visible at times.
The endzone font is also slightly different, but the biggest design change – outside of the midfield state image – is that the endzone is now outlined in orange as opposed to white.
Big 10
Illinois
Minor change for the Illini who have added the block-I to the pants.
Iowa
The Hawkeyes have named the field at Kinnick Stadium after Duke Slater, the legendary Black Iowa football player from the 1920s that led the team to an undefeated season in 1921. Slater’s name will be placed on the 25 yardlines.
Maryland
The Maryland Teripens are two years behind their Under Armour counterparts in wearing the latest template from their uniform provider. The Terps will wear the new “file tab” jersey template for the upcoming season.
Michigan State
Michigan State wore white helmets for the first time in 2017. Those helmets featured the traditional primary logo on the sides.
For 2021, the Spartans will be mixing it up a bit and swapping decals. The Spartan-head logo will be replaced with the State script wordmark that the basketball team has sported for decades.
Minnesota
PJ Fleck strikes again. The Golden Gophers will forego their namesake color for the season opener against Ohio State and wear black uniforms with maroon and white details. The helmets will be maroon but with black decals. Two interesting notes here: the number font is different than the rest of the uniform set, and the team already has an anthracite/grey uniform in the rotation.
Wisconsin
“Forward” uniforms for the Badgers against Notre Dame. (image via David Stluka)
The Badgers will have a new alternate white uniform this season. Wisconsin was originally going to wear these for the Notre Dame game at Lambeau Field last season, but that game was rescheduled for a future season.
The new white uniforms feature a new number font, two thin stripes across the shoulder and helmet, and six stars above the nameplate. The stars are meant to resemble the plaque on display at the famous archway near the football stadium. The stadium grounds were once used as a training site during the Civil War and the arch was erected as a memorial.
The stadium memorial continues onto the helmet, where the Roman numerals “MDCCCCXII” are placed on the rear bumper – again, a reference to the archway’s plaque. The helmet logo is a different twist on the traditional Motion-W, with a banner reading “Forward” placed over the W logo. The Wisconsin state motto is simply “Forward,” meant to “reflect Wisconsin’s continuous drive to be a national leader.”
C-USA
Charlotte
The Charlotte 49ers have repurposed their gold chrome helmet shells to feature the new C-pick logo. It previously was adorned with the former swinging pick logo.
The university also announced that they were adopting the newer C-pick logo as the primary design for the entire institution. The school is also working to further establish itself simply as “Charlotte” rather than the full name of “The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.”
The 49ers will also be playing on a new turf field this year. The new field has the C-pick logo at midfield with light green endzones. The old design had black endzones and the swinging pick logo at midfield.
Florida Atlantic
Everyone loves powder blue. (image via ODU Football)
FAU has named the field at their stadium after the late legendary Howard Schellenberger.
The Owls are also adding a new red jersey to the collection. It will have blue and white UCLA stripes and match the other jerseys.
Old Dominion
Everyone loves powder blue and Old Dominion is no exception. The Monarchs will sport a full light-blue uniform for the upcoming season and will no doubt look incredible doing so. With the uniform’s light shade of blue, let’s hope they try and wear them for a road game or two and we get a color-on-color matchup with this wonderful shade.
Rice
New turf field at Rice Stadium this season. The new field features 5-yard stripes and “Rice Owls” in both endzones which doesn’t leave a lot of empty space like the previous design.
Southern Miss
Southern Miss has bounced back and forth from horrendous uniforms and somewhat respectable designs for years now. This season, the Golden Eagles will have another new set that may place on the good side of that gauge.
USM will have new black, gold, and white jerseys and pants to mix and match throughout the year, along with a white helmet for possibly the first time in program history. Each of the jerseys and pants has a double stripe across the sleeve and down the legs. The biggest detractor is with the yellow tops – those white numbers are going to be difficult to read and maybe deemed illegal. A black outline would have gone a long way here. The black jerseys are the best of the bunch.
UAB
The Blazers are leaving the legendary Legion Field for a new stadium. Protective Stadium, named after Protective Life Insurance based in Birmingham, will be located closer to campus near the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center downtown. UAB has an inaugural season logo for the new 45,000 seat facility, though it’s unclear if the team will wear it in any capacity.
UTSA
New grey uniforms are on tap for the Roadrunners this season.
Mid-American
Akron
The Zips have moved away from Adidas and signed with Nike over the summer. The football team hasn’t shown off much of the new uniforms, just showcasing the new white jerseys for the MAC media days.
The new jerseys are incredibly simple – white base, blue collars and sleeve cuffs, one-colored numbers on the chest, back, and shoulders, and the kangaroo-head logo at the base of the collar. It looks as though Akron will continue to wear the script gold helmets, but we will have to wait to see the rest of the uniform come gameday.
Bowling Green
The Falcons have a new set of pants to better match the jersey stripes. Bowling Green had been wearing pants that were leftover from the previous uniform set.
Miami (OH)
The Redhawks have removed the contrasting shoulder yoke stripes for 2021. The new jerseys are a much simpler and pleasing look. The pants retain the single red stripe, but it appears to be thinner than previously and without the hip logo.
Special patch honoring seniors. (image via Bobcats Football)
Ohio
The Bobcats are honoring those athletes that have chosen to stick around and use their extra year of eligibility at Ohio with a special patch. The patch is in the shape of Ohio, had a large S in the middle, with “senior” written across the center alongside two thin white stripes.
Western Michigan
In December, the university revealed a new primary logo that featured the usual block-W logo encased in a brown circle. The new logo is also accompanied by a new wordmark. Both were designed by a group of alumni touting “over 200 years of professional graphic design experience” – no, really.
The new branding package comes with a slightly updated horse logo. The Circle-W logo has been used by other teams and will be worn on the football team’s new jerseys. The white jerseys were worn during the conference’s media days, though the program hasn’t revealed the full sets just yet.
You can read more about the changes and reasoning here and here.
Mountain West
Air Force
The Falcons will wear B-52 inspired uniforms against Navy. (image via Air Force Football)
Said it before but the service academies always nail the alternate uniforms. Air Force will be sporting new threads honoring the historic B-52 bombing planes, specifically those that flew during Operation Linebacker II in North Vietnam.
Starting from the top: the helmets are painted in a camo design and feature “USAF” on the right side with the stars and stripes roundel logo on the left, mimicking the planes’ paint schemes. The white jerseys have a Strategic Air Command patch on the right chest with camo shoulder caps matching the lids. The nameplate is outlined in orange and has the airport codes for Andersen AFB and U Tapao, two locations that launched B-52s, separated by the 7th Bomber Wing patch. The player numbers also have a camo pattern.
The pants are black with the left leg featuring 11 B-52s to represent the 11 days of bombing as the right side will showcase the plane’s tail flash and the player’s number – a first for Air Force. Unfortunately, photos of that detail were not shown.
The Falcons will debut the B-52 uniforms on the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks as they face Navy, who will sport their own special uniforms for the game.
Colorado State
As the Rams celebrate Ag Day this year, they’ll be sporting a new helmet design to go with the classic orange jerseys. The white shell will feature green and orange stripes with the vintage sailor-capped ram logo on the sides.
Colorado State also has a new football design this year featuring two rams nearly butting heads.
Fresno State
Fresno State is celebrating the 100th season of athletics this year. To commemorate, the Bulldogs have a new 100 years logo. The report indicated that the logo would be worn on official athletic apparel, though no photos have been shared with the logo adorning the football jerseys.
Hawaii
Hawaii is the latest team to jump to from Under Armour as the Rainbow Warriors signed with Adidas over the summer. The team will have new white and black uniforms with green details. The front of the jersey has an oddly arching wordmark, though I think it works well. The back of the jersey features the Hawaiian islands above the nameplate similar to what the team has worn on the helmets the last few years.
Nice touch by Hawaii to use Colt Brennan’s name and number on the reveal jerseys as the former quarterback passed away this summer.
Silver helmets have a new metallic-flake finish. (image via Nevada Football)
The football team will also be playing their games on campus this year, as their former home was deemed unsafe for use.
Nevada
The Wolf Pack have updated their silver helmets to include a new metallic flake finish with chrome facemasks. The shells will retain the script Pack logo on one side with the player number on the other.
Nevada will also reinstate white helmets to the rotation, keeping the same asymmetric design.
San Diego State
The Aztecs have worn incredible helmets for many years featuring the Aztec Sun Stone, but the thin details and glossy finish made it difficult to decipher from afar. It appears that SDSU has made a few tweaks and potentially made the helmet matte to better showcase the details on the field.
Wyoming
The Cowboys are celebrating the 125th season of football this year. No word if the logo will be worn or used on the field.
Pac-12
Arizona
Old is new and new is good. (image via Arizona Football)
The Arizona Wildcats have had the worst case of identity crises in all of college football over the last decade or so. They have simply been entirely lost on what an Arizona football team actually looks like. Thankfully, they finally remedied this glaring issue and finally look like a respectable football team once again.
After bringing back the “Desert Swarm” uniforms in 2019, fans clamored for the design to return full time. And they got their wish. The classic blue and red stripes return to the helmet and jersey sleeves. In a nice attention to detail touch, the team has stayed true to the time period with the script Cats logo being placed on the pants.
These Arizona uniforms make for the biggest turnaround in uniform aesthetics we have seen this year and many previous years.
Oregon
The Ducks have once again revealed a new set of uniforms to be worn for the season. At launch, Oregon showcased new apple green and yellow helmets, jerseys, and pants with a white jersey that has apple green details. They teased a few more options coming later, presumably some dark green or black options.
The biggest details with these uniforms are on the shoulders. A new unique pattern lays across both shoulders and sleeve caps with a three-pointed design layered over them. The “Mercedez logo” pattern, as some have called it, is meant to resemble the diamond-plate uniforms from the mid-2000s.
As is usually the case for Oregon uniforms, there are some odd additions. A gromet-looking set of air-holes are placed underneath the armpit that adds a very small bit of contrasting color to the uniform base. The pants leg also has a similar set of gromets – or whatever they are.
Overall, the designs are typical Oregon. The shoulders look to add interesting detail to a previously simple look. But those green helmets with wings fading to yellow are an incredible look.

UCLA
After an ugly breakup with Under Armour, UCLA jumped to Nike and will be the PAC-12’s lone Jordan Brand representative.
Thankfully, Nike kept the Bruins’ look rather untouched. The shoulder stripes are a little shorter than previously, but that’s just how Nike handles these now. The colors, fonts, and overall design stay the same.
The lone change looks to be with the helmet color which is now a richer shade of gold rather than more yellow as in previous years. The Bruins will continue to wear their gold facemasks, though. They’ve worn this color for a few years now after traditionally sporting grey masks.
Utah
The field turf Rice–Eccles Stadium has been replaced. The block-U logo used at midfield previously was swapped out for the traditional interlocking double-Us.
The Utes will also be sporting new uniforms for their November 20th matchup against Oregon honoring the USS Salt Lake City, a ship that fought throughout the Pacific during World War II. The shoulder and pant details match the scheme painted on the ship. The right shoulder will have a battle star. With 11 players on the field, there will be 11 battle stars featured to represent the battle stars awarded to the ship and crew – so the team claimed. Each hand-painted helmet depicts one of the battles the USS Salt Lake City was engaged in.
Washington
New turf field for the Huskies this year. The biggest difference is that the out-of-bounds outline is no longer all white, but features a purple border until the endzones. It looks better in person than in the mockups.
SEC
Auburn
The Tigers experimented with new player numbers on the back of the helmets for the annual A-Day spring game in April, though it’s undetermined if they will continue to wear them during the season.
Auburn will also have a new football this year, moving from Wilson balls to Team Issue-branded footballs.
Missouri
Mizzou looks good once again. (image via Missouri Football)
Mizzou has flirted with more traditional-looking uniforms for a few years, but will now be going all-in with a new set of classically designed threads.
The new set includes black and white jerseys with three stripes across the sleeves. The Tigers have a new pair of gold pants that feature a different set of stripes, supposedly meant to represent a classic Missouri design. The white pants are held over from last season. The helmet retains the same three-stripe pattern that Mizzou has worn recently, minus the incredible diamond pattern in the center stripe.
The Tigers will also have a new turf playing surface for the season. The biggest change is that “Tigers” is added back to one endzone, as both have read “Mizzou” in recent years.
Texas A&M
The Aggies debuted new throwback-inspired primary uniforms last season but have made a small tweak for this year. The maroon jerseys now have contrasting white sleeve cuffs.
Texas A&M is also celebrating the 100th year of their 12th man tradition with a commemorative logo. No word if the team will wear it.
Vanderbilt
Another team that has struggled aesthetically for a number of years is Vanderbilt. And like other teams in that boat, the Commodores have fixed that issue.
Gone are the anchor stripes and even the iconic V-Star, being replaced with the throwback block V logo. The V-Star logo has donned Vandy helmets off-and-on since 1969. The block V has been worn in different iterations but hasn’t seen the field in this design since 1968.
The helmet logo aside, everything Vandy did here is an incredible upgrade. Traditional stripes are back on the helmet, sleeves, and pants. Jerseys come in black and white with two stripes on the sleeves each and the school name in gold on the chest (should be black for the white tops). Pants are available in black, white, and gold with a different striping pattern from the jerseys. Personally, I wish the jerseys had the pants stripes and I hope to see Vanderbilt sport the gold pants a lot this season.
Details on Vandy’s new threads (image via Vanderbilt Football)
Sun Belt
Coastal Carolina
The defending Sun Belt championships have updated their black and white jerseys. The black tops feature teal numbers, collars, cuffs, and the Chanticleer logo on the sleeves. The previous style had teal shoulder caps with white dotted stripes.
The white jerseys also have teal details, but a curved stripe goes around the shoulder caps housing the mascot logo. The old white tops were rather similar but with the shoulder stripes not touching the cuffs and TV numbers rather than the logo.
South Alabama
The Jaguars have new white pants that feature red and blue stripes, a much-needed improvement over the plain pants worn the last few years.
Independents
BYU
As BYU should look. (image via BYU Football)
The winner of the offseason is no doubt BYU. The Cougars have bounced back and forth between navy and royal blue for years now. This season, they’ll be going all-in on both colors. BYU will now have four full uniform sets, including jerseys and pants in navy, royal blue, white with navy details, and white with royal details.
They will also have navy, royal, and white helmets to utilize as they please, each being able to change slightly with different decals and facemask colors. You can see more details of all 26 possible combinations here.
The Cougars have also updated the front bumpers of their helmets, moving from the Circle-Y logo to the BYU wordmark.
Notre Dame
The annual Shamrock Series returns this year for Notre Dame’s bout against Wisconsin at Soldier Field. The game was originally scheduled for last year in Green Bay but was rescheduled for a future season. Because of that, the Irish designed an alternate uniform based on the Packers’ uniforms, but have pivoted to make it seem more Chicago-based.
The jerseys feature gold and white sleeve stripes with the ND logo overlayed. The back of the collar has “Graduating Champions” for some reason – that’s usually a detail saved for the inside of the collar that is never seen during games. The pants also mimic the Packers’ design, adding a beautiful set of stripes to the Irish’s uniforms. In another attempt to Chicago-fy the uniform, the rear bumper on the helmets will feature the city flag.

FCS
Abilene Christian
ACU changed from the Southland Conference to the Western Athletic Conference for this season. The Wildcats’ jerseys and field turf have been updated to reflect the change.
The team is also celebrating the 100th season of ACU football this year with a wonderful anniversary logo. No word if the logo will be featured on the uniforms this year.
Cal Poly
The Mustangs made a logo switch earlier this year, redesignating the CP logo as primary and the galloping horse design as the secondary logo.
Central Arkansas
The Bears’ famous purple and grey striped turf field has been replaced over the summer. The overall design stayed the same, but there were a few tweaks. The biggest feature is that the midfield logo is now the bear head on its own rather than having the UCA letters behind it. The bear claws in the endzone were removed and “Fear the Stripes” is now placed on the opposing team’s sideline. The school name previously donned both sidelines.
Charleston Southern
New white helmets with red C logo for the Raiders. (via Colgate Football)
The Buccaneers also made a logo change, making the Bucky Head logo the primary with the CSU-swords design the secondary.
The team has also replaced the turf field that has the new primary logo at midfield.
Colgate
Colgate looks to be sporting a newly designed white helmet featuring the C logo. They’ve traditionally worn “‘gate” decals.
Columbia
The Lions have retired their gradient-striped uniforms for new threads. The new design – in white and dark grey – features two solid stripes on contrasting shoulder caps. The white tops have light blue stripes on navy, as the greys have white stripes on light blue caps. The new white pants are plain, removing the stripe from the previous set. Both tops will carry #67 patches to honor Jackson Coker, a freshman wide receiver who died from a car accident in March.
Dayton
The Flyers will be sporting new UCLA striped uniforms this season. The home combo will include red tops with white/blue/white stripes and grey pants with an Ole Miss-like red and blue stripe. The white uniforms will have red/blue/red stripes on the shoulders and carry blue/red stripes down the pants, the inverse of the grey sets. The previous design had contrasting shoulder caps with some armpit striping.
Dayton will also sport a white helmet for the first time in decades. The primary Winged-D logo will don the right side of the shell as the player number will be placed on the left.
Florida A&M
FAMU has made the jump from the MEAC to the SWAC. The team’s turf field reflects the change. The Rattlers will also be sporting new white helmets this season, potentially the first in program history.
Florida A&M announced that they have enhanced their relationship with Nike by partnering with Lebron James’s King James brand. The release noted that teams would wear King James branded uniforms and apparel, though nothing has been revealed yet.
Harvard
The Crimson have new threads this year. The red and white tops both feature a beautiful font, supposedly meant to represent the curvatures of the stadium. After a few years of wearing matte helmets, the new shells return to a glossy finish with a white H logo. And the shoulders don the school’s traditional Veritas patch.
Indiana State
After losing out on a season last year, the Sycamores will debut new threads this season. The team showcased the new blue uniforms but they have a matching white colorway as well.
The jerseys have an interesting diagonal stripe design placed on contrasting-colored shoulder caps. The pants feature well-sized stripes that house the school name down the leg. Each jersey will carry the Indiana State Unity patch as well this year.
The old uniforms had contrasting shoulder caps and stripeless pants with the team name written on the left knee cap.
Jackson State
Celebrating 50 years. (image via JMU Football)
The Deion Sanders-led Tigers will have a new chrome helmet available this season. For the conference media days, the helmet was shown with asymmetric decals – the right side with a tiger claw and the left with “I Believe” and a J. Word is these decals will be worn for a single game, but the chrome shells are gonna be used throughout the season.
James Madison
James Madison is celebrating the 50th season of football this year and announced a special commemorative logo. The team did not announce if the logo would be worn during the season.
Lamar
Lamar is among the newest members of WAC this season and the Cardinals have updated the playing surface to reflect the change.
McNeese State
Hurricane Laura, a category 4 storm, hit Louisiana in August of 2020. Two months later, Hurricane Delta hit the same area. The storms devastated McNeese State’s campus and flooded the football stadium. The Cowboys have spent the last year cleaning up the damage and replacing the turf field.
Despite the necessity to replace the carpet, McNeese will keep the new turf’s design the same as the previous.
Montana
The Grizzlies revealed new uniforms back in November but didn’t wear them for the team’s spring season. The new uniforms feature dual stripes on the shoulders, where the former jerseys had the bear paw logo. Montana’s pants now feature matching stripes after going blank with the previous design.
Montana State
Montana State made a slight tweak to their jerseys, moving the stripes from the shoulder to the sleeves. The chestmark is also slightly smaller now.
North Alabama
The UNA Lions have new Adidas threads for the season. The team will have new purple and white colorways available, while still having the old gold pants to wear. The new white tops feature three stripes – an upgrade over the previous stripes – as the purple tops are blank. The home jerseys have seen the TV numbers moved from the sleeve cuffs to the shoulders.
Northern Arizona
Adore the creativity for the Lumberjacks (image via NAU Football)
The Lumberjacks may have just released the best uniforms of the year.
The new threads come in white and blue and both feature incredible details unique to NAU. The collars have a blue and yellow striped pattern, supposedly meant to resemble “the excitement and energy of the lumberjack.” The shoulders have an interesting “mountain hero” design, and the pants have an “NAU Heartbeat” stripe, which looks to include another mountain peak design.
The storytelling elements aside, it’s so nice to see a school include team-specific designs like this to make for such a unique uniform.
Richmond
The Spiders have moved from Nike to Adidas and, to their credit, kept the uniforms rather similar. The old Nike threads had great shoulder stripes, though the red and blue tops slightly differed from the white jerseys. The pants also had matching stripes.
The new Adidas uniforms have stripeless pants (a disappointment) but kept the striping on the tops. The Spiders have only shown off the blue jerseys, however. Hopefully, the striping is more consistent now.
Sam Houston State
The defending FCS National Champions have joined the Western Athletic Conference for 2021 and have updated their jerseys and field turf with the WAC logos.
Samford
The Bulldogs will be honoring the late Bobby Bowden with a memorial decal on the helmets this season. Bowden played three years at Samford and would start his coaching career in Birmingham.
Southeastern Louisiana
Incredible set of new logos for the Lions. (image via SLU Athletics)
After years of using a rough lion mark and an oddly stylized S, Southeastern Louisiana has a new set of incredible logos to use moving forward. The new primary logo has SLU placed over the state of Louisiana and will be worn on the football helmets. A handsome forward-facing lion logo will be placed at midfield on the football field. The Lions also have a new stylized S design that is lightyears above the old look.
SLU also announced in July that they would start wearing Under Armour uniforms, though they haven’t shown them off just yet.
Southern
The Jaguars appear to have new grey uniforms. The jerseys have powder blue and yellow UCLA stripes with blue numerals outlined in yellow. The pants striping matches those of the jerseys.
Stephen F. Austin
The newest Western Athletic Conference member will have a new turf field to play on this season. The new field has the newer SFA-ax logo at midfield whereas previously the Texas state SFA logo was featured. The endzones also have a new font.
Stetson
Big upgrade for the Hatters this year, moving from green tops with white shoulder caps to featuring large white and bright green stripes with a large chestmark and giant numbers. You’ll be able to spot this team from miles away! The white colorway will feature a similar look.
The pants also change to a plain green pair, removing the large white stripe from the old set.
The Citadel
Joe Bosack & Co. with another hit. (image via The Citadel Athletics)
The always incredible Joe Bosack & Co. has assisted The Citadel in releasing a new identity for the school. The school previously used a block C logo – with or without the South Carolina outline joining – for years now.
The new primary logo will be a new block C with a star centered, with a strong bulldog head as the secondary logo. The Bulldogs will also have two new wordmarks – one in a block font to match the primary C logo and a beautiful script mark.
The new C logo will don the football helmet shells starting this season.
Towson
The Tigers have revealed new black and white jerseys to match the gold tops they wore two years ago. The old white tops had black shoulder caps as the black jerseys had gold collars and sleeve cuffs.
Valparaiso
Valpo retired their longtime “Crusaders” nickname earlier this year and announced that the new name will be “Beacons.” While the name fits the Christian university well, the logo they released alongside the name leaves a lot left to be desired.
Western Carolina
Formerly wearing Adidas uniforms, the Catamounts have signed with Nike moving forward and revealed their new white uniforms for the week one matchup against Eastern Kentucky. The team will also have purple jerseys and gold pants that will allow many combinations throughout the season.
Youngstown
The Penguins have changed from Under Armour to Nike this year. While the new uniforms are rather simple, they’re still an overall improvement from the last set. The new set comes with red and white jerseys along with red, white, and black pants making for multiple combinations to be worn this year.
Division II
Clarion
The Golden Eagles have a new blue home jersey to match the white colorway. The previous design was a years-old Under Armour templated look.
Great Midwest Athletic Conference
Celebrating their 10th season as a conference, the GMAC will have a commemorative logo for the occasion.
Johnson C. Smith
After wearing Russell Athletic uniforms for many years, the Golden Bulls have moved over to Under Armour. The new jerseys feature a generic catalog design that includes a colorful starburst-like design. The yellow pants are plain but the navy pants have yellow stripes over the knees.
Northwest Missouri State
Family on the chest. (image via Bearcat Football)
The Bearcats have updated to the latest Adidas A1 Primeknit template with their green and white uniforms. Both jerseys feature a custom Bearcat “family” patch. Interestingly, the patch and Adidas logo swap placements between the two tops. Northwest previously had the dreaded tire tread pattern.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania
The Crimson Hawks have revealed a new uniform featuring a crimson top and grey pants with a classic design. The tops feature grey and white Northwestern stripes with a block font on the front, back, and shoulders. The pants are grey and carry a similar set of stripes in crimson and white. The previous style had a pointed font, no jersey stripes, and an odd stripe on the pants.
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
The SIAC has revealed a new branding prior to the season. The new logo features strong letter marks on a background split in two colors with a white outline. For each of the conference’s 15 teams, the logo will change colors to match those of the institution. The previous logo had rounded letters with two outlines to tie it all together.
Division III
College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin
The CCIW released a new brand identity. The primary logo has a split down the center to represent the border between Illinois and Wisconsin. The conference also has sport-specific designs that are really creative. It’s a quality upgrade over the previous logo.
Hardin-Simmons
New purple jerseys this season for the Cowboys, moving on from purple tops with black shoulder caps. The white pants shown are holdovers from previous seasons, though it’s difficult to know about the black and yellow pants.
Northwest Conference
Who doesn’t love a good pirate logo? (image via SWU Athletics)
The Northwest Conference has a new visual identity. The new primary logo is a badge featuring mountains, trees, and water iconography from the local geography. The conference introduced a really cool series of sport-specific badges playing off of the primary logo. It’s all-around a huge upgrade over the previous water-color painted design.
Southwestern
The Pirates recently revealed a new identity. The entire project was completed in-house by the university’s creative director and a football team member.
The new primary logo is a black, gold, and white Jolly Roger that resembles the school’s first athletic logo. The secondary logo is really cool – a ripped pirate flag that includes the state of Texas and the school’s founding year of 1840. The new wordmark is also a really clean look.
Southwestern was the first higher education school founded in Texas and participated in the first intra-collegiate athletic events in the state.
There it is – a full breakdown of all the new uniforms, logos, and field designs throughout college football.
Despite the issues that teams and manufacturers have seen throughout the supply chain, over 150 teams and conferences were still featured here this year!
Thanks as always to all the teams and equipment managers for sharing the images of their respective new uniforms. Thanks also to Uni-Watch, SportsLogos.net, and College Sports Logos for helping showcase all the new details.

2018 NCAA Football Uniforms Recap
/0 Comments/by Clint RichardsonWith football season just about to start, many teams looking to upgrade their uniforms one way or another. While previous seasons have seen major changes in uniform design for teams, this year consists more of minor tweaks and template changes. Even though there are a lot of teams listed here, most will look fairly similar to last year.
2018 marks the fifth anniversary of the Auburn Uniform Database, but the seventh NCAA CFB Uniform Recap that I have compiled. Each edition has been bigger than the previous, incorporating over 120 teams last season. This edition will also surpass the 120 mark.
This season also marks the 150th year of college football. The 100th anniversary was a huge deal in 1969, with a majority of teams wearing a 100 decal prominently on their helmets. Don’t expect the same celebration this time around, sadly. Team branding is too much of a priority nowadays that there’s no way any school will abandon their logo for something like this. I personally think we will be lucky to even see it as a decal on the backside of the helmets.
ACC
- Clemson
The Tigers inked a new 10-year, $58 million extension with Nike that now runs through the 2027-28 athletic season.
- Duke
Minor change for Duke with a big impact, as the Blue Devils have updated to the Nike Vapor Untouchable template.
- Florida State
FSU showcased an alternate black uniform design when they revealed the current set back in 2014. That design was shelved for a long time, only making a few appearances. With new coach Willie Taggart coming from Oregon, there’s a possibility we’ll see many more combinations going forward. According to some social media posts by a few players, it is expected that the Seminoles will wear their black jerseys with their gold pants for the opening game against Virginia Tech.
- Georgia Tech
GT’s new stinger-inspired uniforms are a great evolution of their uniforms. (image via Georgia Tech Athletics)
Gone is Russell Athletic and in is adidas. With the change came a branding refresh including a new custom font. Georgia Tech’s new Primeknit A1 uniforms are one of adidas’ best jobs over the last few years. The stinger-style striping works really well. I love the idea of the two white jerseys – gold numbers for home games, navy for road trips. The white helmet feels out of place with the striping. The striping also looks terrible on the back end. All in all, it’s a great look for the Yellow Jackets. No navy uniforms were revealed, as they’ll probably be shown off before a bowl game.
- Louisville
The Cardinals have updated to the new Primeknit A1 template from adidas. The wing design on the shoulders has also seen an update. They’re also placed at a steeper angle, which effects the TV numbers. No idea why they decided to place them at an angle rather than straight on, but it was the wrong decision. The side of the jerseys also feature a circle of stars from the city flag. Louisville’s new uniforms would have been really nice if it weren’t for that.
- Miami (FL)
Minor change for the Hurricanes, but one that improves the look tremendously. Miami has updated to adidas’ new Primeknit A1 template that removes the insane tiretread pattern. The U logo is now placed on the collar, the adidas logo has swapped sides on the pants, and the nameplate font has received a makeover. All help Miami look just as good as they always should. The Hurricanes will also be sporting special environmentally friendly uniforms for the opening game against LSU. About 70% of the uniform is made from recycled material. The shoulder caps contrast with the body, and the numbers feature green stitching, which is apparently a prominent feature of the Parley shoe line. The neat aspect of this marketing campaign is the uniforms will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science to help fund educational research.
- NC State
After wearing simple and rather plain uniforms the last few years, North Carolina State is changing things up in 2018. The shoulder stripes used on the black alternate last season is now being used across the board. The stripes are bold and I think they work quite well. I like having a new design on the shoulders like this, rather than recycling the same stripe designs that have been used for years. Sadly, the pants are pretty weird and have Wolfpack placed down the left leg, with the right leg blank. The previous set of striped pants would really complete this uniform.
- Virginia
Virginia will continue to get compared to Auburn with their latest set of uniforms (that’s not a bad thing). (image via UVA Media Relations)
The Cavilers have dabbled in new uniform designs the last few seasons with Bronco Mendenhall as head coach. This year, Virginia will be sporting a really nice new set of uniforms, with double striping on the helmet, jersey, and pants. The attention to detail is impressive, with a few hidden keys located across the uniform. The number font features notches that match the design of the V in the primary logo. The inner collar of the blue jersey features 10 stars to represent Virginia being the 10th state in the U.S. Union. Virginia will have three helmets to select from, which will hopefully keep the team looking good all season long. Unfortunately, the helmets will only feature the V-saber logo on one side, with the player number on the other. This silly trend is the only detail to detract from a really great look overall.
- Virginia Tech
VT is no secret to new uniforms, having tried many different designs over the years and breaking out a multitude of alternate designs. The Hokies will be debuting a brand new set of uniforms this upcoming season that are actually rather similar to their previous design. After sporting a really nice UCLA-stripe design for many years, the new uniforms have tweaked them with a bit of an angle. The new style will be a little off-putting for some who were accustomed to the classic look. I think it does a great job of representing the school’s previous design and making it more modern. The numbers feature a sublimated brick pattern that was used with the Hokie-stone helmet and uniforms in previous seasons. The unfortunate aspects of this design are the plain, stripeless pants (which is another bad trend in uniform design) and the tapering stripes on the helmet. Copy the stripes from the jerseys, even at an angle on the pants, and this set could look much better.
AAC
- Cincinnati
Small change for the Bearcats, who look to have removed the striping from their helmets. True shame, really, as the striping worked well.
- Connecticut
UConn is expected to have new uniforms for the 2019 season. For this season, though, the Huskies will be sporting the old block-C helmets for six games. That leads me to think the new uniforms next year could very well feature the old logo full time. The block-C logo was used until 2012 when the school unified all the athletic teams under a single brand.
- East Carolina
After switching to adidas a few season ago, East Carolina is now taking the opportunity to update their look. Teaming up with adidas, ECU has revealed a new pattern to be used in many applications. The pattern features six different icons that represent different aspects of the university and branding. The pattern will be used on the pants, and the primary pirate head logo will be boldly represented on the shoulder caps. The new adidas Primeknit A1 template helps with the new look.
- Memphis
No official word from Memphis, but it looks like the Tigers have yet another new set of uniforms. From the rough videos shared, the white jerseys have only grey details and the grey uniforms have blue details.
- South Florida
USF is one of a many teams that changed uniform providers this season. The Bulls dumped Under Armour for adidas, and the uniforms suffered. After sporting a rather nice look the last few years, the new design is nothing more than a template design from adidas. For some reason, adidas has not been very good at providing teams with the newest template. South Florida is one of multiple new teams that will be wearing older templates. The Shockweb 2.0 template, complete with the infamous tiretreads, does not look good in USF’s dark green. The numbers, chestmark, and shoulder logos are all gold and applied with adidas’ “shiny duct tape” look. It’s hard not to see this as a massive downgrade from the Under Armour era. The black set carries the “Irish rainbow” gradient from previous years. USF has now also been outfitted by Nike, Under Armour, and adidas over the last twelve years. That’s a lot of change for a team that has only been around since 1997.
- Temple
Temple has a new set of uniforms for this season, coming in cherry, white, black, and grey. The jerseys feature the school’s iconic pattern in a stripe across the collarbones. The pattern was previously set on the shoulders. The Owls thankfully will still carry the pattern as well. The one drawback is that they placed “Temple Tuff” on the knee stripe. I’m not too keen on a higher education facility publishing “Tuff” in any fashion. Two extra helmet options will be in the rotation this season also, with the script wordmark having an opportunity to replace the T logo. I do love honoring an athlete’s work in the classroom, and Temple has added a special academic patch. Why is it on the back? According to head coach Collins, “academic success is representative of student’s family name.”
- Tulsa
New Primeknit A1 uniforms for the Golden Hurricanes. The jerseys will feature gold a lot more than red like previously. It also looks as though Tulsa has removed the striping from the helmets.
Big 12
- Baylor
No uniform changes as of now for the Baylor Bears, but they did sign on with VICIS to outfit a majority of their team with the Zero1 helmet. According to the press release, 80 of the 115 members of the team readily selected the helmet, which has been rated at the top of multiple safety tests.
- Iowa State
The Cyclones made one of the biggest changes in uniforms from 2017 to 2018, and it might have paid off. (image via Iowa State Athletics)
The Cyclones have had issues trying to separate themselves brand-wise from other red and yellow teams. They once added blue and quickly removed it. Black is the new blue, apparently, as Iowa State has revealed three new uniforms for the upcoming season. The set comes with red, white, and black helmets, jerseys, and pants. There might be a yellow set in the future. The numbers feature a unique curve to resemble a cyclone. While I will miss the UCLA-striped set, I think these have potential. The white jerseys are gorgeous and balance the red and yellow perfectly. The other two jerseys can’t say that. The red top has a black collar, which doesn’t match anything else on the set. The number font is interesting enough without being overboard. It won’t be visible from far away anyways. I think it could use some tweaking and color balancing all around, but it’s a start. It’s hard to move away from what they had, though.
- Kansas
Kansas has updated to the new Primeknit A1 template from adidas for this season. The Jayhawk and adidas logos swap placements now as well.
- Oklahoma
Oklahoma underwent a brand refresh earlier in the season. The primary logo has been tweaked a bit and the helmet will now reflect the change. A new font is being used for the numbers and wordmarks. The Sooners are also one of the latest teams to join the Jordan Brand team. The Rough Rider alternate uniforms have also seen some tweaks, with the “wheel spokes” on the previous template being removed and traditional pant stripes being added over the short style.
- Texas
Very small change for the Longhorns, as Texas has tweaked the wordmark on the front chest. The “Texas” lettering has been widened to take up more real estate on the jersey. It had been the same style for many years prior. The Longhorns have also announced they will be wearing black socks and cleats this year.
- West Virginia
New Vapor Untouchable jerseys for WVU. It looks as though the armpit stains have been removed, which is always an improvement. They’re due for a redesign; hopefully it comes sooner than later. West Virginia has also added some really cool “Country Road” rear bumpers to their helmets.
Big 10
- Illinois
A brand simplification and uniform redesign a few years ago was not good enough for Illinois. The Illini will be wearing a new set of uniforms this season with a much simpler design. The Grey Ghost uniforms have also returned. I liked the previous look and thought they were a few tweaks away from being really good. The new look is a little empty, but I think is another good design. The overall design is based off the Dick Butkus era, which explains the solid colors, lack of stripes, and lack of contrasting outlines. One unique aspect are the vertical lines set in the numbers and sides of the jerseys, which are meant to resemble the columns at the school’s football field, Memorial Stadium. The columns were built to honor Illinois soldiers that had lost their lives.
- Indiana
Minor changes for the Hoosiers. Indiana has upgraded to the new Primeknit A1 template for starters. The chestmark no longer reads “Hoosiers” but now “Indiana.” The shoulder caps have utilized the candy stripes well, having them in a tone-on-tone application. Though the pants no longer have traditional stripes, they also carry the candy stripes in a sublimated pattern. I wish they had them bolder, but I like this style. Indiana will also wear memorial decals for former coach Bill Mallory, who passed away in May.
- Iowa
Last season, Iowa wore alternate grey and black uniforms against Ohio State. Looks like some elements stuck with the Hawkeyes, as they have updated their primary uniforms – also now on the Vapor Untouchable template – with the font used on the alternates. I think it works better on the Steelers-clones, and helps differentiate themselves from Pittsburgh.
- Maryland
The Terps have made a few tweaks to their uniforms this season. The black stripe on the jerseys that separated the body color from the Maryland flag pattern has now been removed. The pants will also not have the kneecap stripe. The hip logo used to be the Maryland flag but is now the school’s M logo. The helmets used to have “Maryland” written in large letters on the back, but that has also been removed. Players will also wear a #79 decal on their helmets to honor Jordan McNair, who died this summer from heat stroke after a workout.
- Michigan
Chrome helmets are among the many new additions to PJ Fleck’s newest team.(image via Minnesota Athletics)
Michigan is making a change to the Big House. The end zones on the field will now be blue, rather than the previous green. The blue end zones were used for bowl games in the past.
- Minnesota
PJ Fleck strikes again. The new Golden Gopher coach has attacked the university’s branding standards and substituted his own brand. The “Row the Boat” mantra and trademark Fleck had at Western Michigan has transitioned about 500 miles northwest and infiltrated Minneapolis. Fleck had thrown boat oars on Western Michigan’s uniforms years ago, and the Gophers have contacted the same disease. The collars and numbers feature a sublimated oar pattern and an oar even adorns the helmets as a stripe. The new maroon, white, and grey uniforms will also have a gold chrome helmet in the rotation. No gold elements were revealed and it would be an even bigger downgrade if they leave it out altogether. The previous set was so good, too.
- Nebraska
New Primeknit A1 uniforms are on tap for Nebraska. The lack of tiretreads has helped every team. Very few changes were made with the Huskers. The biggest adjustment is the “winning tradition” patch moved to the upper left chest since the adidas logo was moved from the center of the chest. It also looks like the red pants have lost the stripe, and the same is possible for the white ones.
- Purdue
Looks as though Purdue has new matte gold helmets for this season. The Boilermakers are no stranger to alternate helmets, having worn black and chrome helmets recently.
- Rutgers
Rutgers has a new look for this season. The Primeknit A1 template was the right opportunity to change up the design. Where Rutgers wore some pretty bland and empty uniforms last year, they now have stripes. Northwestern stripes don the shoulders and pants, with the latter being cut off at an odd shape. Rutgers has always been an odd case for me, never really looking great. I don’t think these stripes fix that completely. It feels unbalanced with the empty helmet as well.
C-USA
- Marshall
The Thundering Herd have made minor adjustments to their uniforms, mainly with upgrading to the Vapor Untouchable template. The chestmark also pops a lot more with the new black outline.
- North Texas
North Texas tried to jump in on the Fortnite craze during the summer, by showing off all the uniform combos in a menu that mimics the game. Those images showcased what looked to be a new set of grey pants to match the jerseys worn last year. Looks as though the Mean Green will also have a new turf design this year, which features the state outline at midfield and white lettering in the green endzones. The previous design had green lettering in the unpainted endzones.
- Old Dominion
Template upgrades are in order for the Monarchs. Old Dominion took the opportunity to finally upgrade from the “double stitch” template and removed the previously shortened shoulder stripes. The new uniforms feature the school shield logo on the shoulders.
- Rice
The Owls have new adidas uniforms and they’re…odd. The design is rather similar – plain and simple, blue and white. But it’s the template that causes the confusion. While most teams are jumping on board with the latest and greatest styles, Rice went with the Techfit Hyped jerseys, which feature a large collar and more panels and ventilation areas than adidas has used in years. The move is an odd one – unprecedented, for sure – for an FBS level school. I originally thought they might be preparing to move on from adidas, as Michigan and UCLA both wore lower level style jerseys the last year of their deals. But Rice signed an extension with adidas back in April through the 2023-24 season.
- Southern Miss
One of the final Russell Athletic hold outs has moved on to adidas. The new Shockweb 2.0 uniforms are rather simple, but are a nice, clean look for Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles will once again have gold, black, and white uniforms to mix and match. They will also be wearing special helmet decals to honor OB Bowen, who passed away in January from cancer. Bowen was a longtime assistant coach with the Golden Eagles and considered a legend around Hattiesburg.
- UTEP
UTEP’s new orange is a bit different, but the new uniforms look great. (image via UTEP Athletics)
The Miners have always bounced around between good and not so good uniform designs. This year’s new uniforms swing back to the good side. The three new uniforms feature a really nice set of stripes on the shoulder caps. Something does seem to be missing, though, as there isn’t enough contrast, especially on the orange jerseys. The pants are mostly blank, minus the white pants which feature the school name on the right leg. UTEP has also tweaked their orange helmets, removing the stripes.
- Western Kentucky
New 100 years of football logo of the Hilltoppers. It will be worn as a patch on the jerseys.
Independent
- Liberty
The newest team to join the FBS ranks is Liberty University. The Flames have revealed a new logo to commemorate their first year in the upper ranks. Liberty is reportedly having issues finding a conference to join.
- Notre Dame
It’s starting to become a trend where college programs mimic a professional team’s uniform for a one-off game. Notre Dame, one of the biggest brands in all of collegiate athletics, will be wearing pinstriped uniforms based on the famous New York Yankees’ (one of the biggest brands in all of sports) uniforms as they play their annual Shamrock Series game in Yankees Stadium. The uniform is a bit divisive, featuring pinstripes on the shoulder caps, entire pants, and on the special helmet logo. The chestmark is written in script like the Yankees, and the number font is meant to also mimic that used by the Bronx Bombers. The matte blue helmet is such a divergence from the classic gold shells that it alone nearly ruins this uniform for me. I’m really not a fan of schools abandoning their branding, which takes a ton of time and money to establish, to simply copy someone else’s work. Notre Dame is also marketing “Irish Wear Green” for their season opening game against Michigan. Many believe that green jerseys will make an appearance.
(image via Notre Dame Athletics)MAC
- Ball State
Ball State has new white jerseys that feature a really great set of UCLA stripes on the shoulders.
- Bowling Green
Hard not to love the Falcon’s new helmets, especially that orange shell. (image via Bowling Green Athletics)
The Falcons have made a few changes to their helmets this season. The new orange shells feature a metallic finish and it pops quite nicely. The annual military appreciation helmet will be white this season. I’m not always keen on these kind of designs, but love how Bowling Green does it. The center stripes feature the names of 111 Bowling Green State University students that lost their lives serving our country. There is also a 111 decal on the back of the helmet.
- Ohio
Looks as though the Bobcats have transitioned to a new adidas template. With that, the UCLA stripes have been replaced with shoulder stripes. Ohio had tweaked their white jerseys previously, so now the two match again.
Mountain West
- Air Force
Air Force never ceases to amaze with their alternate uniforms. (image via Air Force Equipment)
Air Force strikes again with a great alternate uniform. There’s no need to craft a story from scratch when you have the history the Air Force Academy holds. This year the Falcons will be honoring the AC-130 gunship. The helmets will feature a nice artistic design of the gunship on the left side, similar to how Navy featured ships in the fleet a few years back. The other side of the helmet and the right shoulder cap will feature squadrons responsible for flying the AC-130. Air Force also made some minor tweaks to their logo this offseason.
- Hawai’i
The Rainbow Warriors have revealed a new set of uniforms that take a lot of inspiration from those worn during one of the most successful tenures in program history. Back in 2007, Hawai’i had a blonde haired quarterback by the name of Colt Brennan who helped lead his team to a WAC championship and a Sugar Bowl bid versus Georgia. The uniform then seems to be the basis for the new design. A tribal pattern dons the left shoulder and thigh, much like a decade ago. Under Armour tried to implement more of a floral pattern with the last set, having it sublimated across the pants, but it didn’t seem to catch on. Black helmets also make their return to the rotation. The new design looks much cleaner and stronger on the new textiles than they did on the shiny and baggy Nike uniforms. It’s a great look with a lot of history for the Warriors. I really hope they have a new rainbow throwback in the works for this season.
- Nevada
After a lengthy stay with Nike, Nevada has jumped ship to adidas. The new uniforms are incredibly bland being just navy and white. And grey with the pants, an odd choice. The more odd aspect is that Nevada willingly chose a template from adidas that is two generations obsolete. There’s no reason any team in FBS football, let alone any new team for adidas, to be wearing this template. It’s really a shame, too, because Nevada actually looked pretty good last season, sticking with the minimalist look and grey pants. They didn’t replicate that this time around.
- Utah State
Upgrade for the Aggies, who have taken the move to Nike’s Vapor Untouchable template as an opportunity to tweak the uniforms. The jerseys and pants have a new striping pattern that looks to have some Native American inspiration. The numbers no longer have an imprinted pattern.
- Wyoming
A few seasons after revealing new Nike uniforms, the Cowboys have switched over to adidas. Their new uniforms are rather similar to the last set, but with a few differences. The shoulder stripes are now more “valley” like, as they curve down in the middle. The pants also have a new stripe pattern. Thankfully they kept the number font and look to have even improved it.
Pac 12
- Arizona State
Never question Arizonians’ love for their state flag imagery. (image via Arizona State Athletics)
New coach Herm Edwards was not a fan of the Sun Devils’ uniforms when handed one during his introduction press conference. Edwards was even quoted asking if the game jersey was “a girl’s jersey,” and being appalled at the idea of game jerseys being so small and stretchy. From Pac 12 Media Days, it looks like Herm has made some adjustments to Arizona State’s uniforms for his first season. The pitchfork is now gone from the shoulders. “Sun Devils” is placed on both pant legs. As much as I liked what Nike did with the pitchfork in 2013, I thought adidas did it better. I’m ok with the removal of the pitchfork is that means Sparky is back more. I do love the subtle design element of the state flag being sublimated on the chest. I am interested to see how prevalent it is during the games, though.
- Oregon
The darlings of college football uniforms are at it again. Oregon revealed four new uniforms, in the expected colors of green, yellow, white, and black. The unexpected part, however, was the restraint seen with the design. Oregon has worn some very loud, unexpected, and revolutionary uniforms over the years, but these will not be in that category. The uniforms showcased feature the return of the winged helmets – although mostly in a tone-on-tone fashion – blank plants with the only flare being a large O logo, and jerseys with their own mystique. The tops have few elements that scream Oregon football – no stripes, no wings, in fact, nothing on the shoulders at all. Large numbers are used on the jerseys, which has honestly been the biggest point of discussion. A military-style name badge is located on the chest, very similar to what the Jacksonville Jaguars had originally planned for their previous uniform set. Contrasting colored nameplates have been commonplace in hockey, but not so in football. Oregon looks to be changing that. Personally, I think these uniforms are rather underwhelming for Oregon’s standards, but a quality look overall. I surprised myself when I determined the black with neon green details was my favorite of the bunch. My biggest gripe is that Oregon has always been the one to set trends for uniform designs. This set doesn’t do that. It simply follows the minimalist trend that many other teams have been following.
Simple is bold, for once, with Oregon’s new uniforms. (image via Oregon Athletics)- Oregon State
“Retro Benny” has been reinstated as a secondary logo at Oregon State. The Beavers will don the vintage logo on their black helmets on October 20th versus Cal.
- Stanford
Subtle changes for the Cardinal this season, as they have changed to the Vapor Untouchable template, added a black outline around the numbers, and added a white facemask to the helmets. Stanford has done great over the last few years slightly tweaking their uniforms but leaving the overall aesthetic the same. I hope they keep the cardinal facemask and just plan to rotate it in with the whites.
- Utah
The Utes will be celebrating 125 years of Utah football this season and have a special logo for the occasion. It will be worn as a patch on the jerseys.
- Washington
The Huskies announced they will be switching to adidas following this football season. Washington was apparently a hot commodity over the offseason, and adidas won the bidding process by a good bit.
SEC
- Arkansas
The Razorbacks have upgraded their uniforms with the change to the Vapor Untouchable. The “tusks” that didn’t really represent solely Arkansas have been removed. The pants stripe now connects to the belt loop and no longer floats. Gone are the matte helmets for the traditional “pearl cardinal” finish. All in all these are upgrades across the board. Arkansas will look their best in a long time this season.
- Auburn
Auburn added 3D bumpers to the front of the helmet last year. The plan was to add the rear bumper for this upcoming season, but they went ahead and did so for the bowl game. Both front and rear 3D bumpers will be used for the 2018 season.
- Florida
A simple logo change, especially to the Jumpman, can make a world of difference. (image via Florida Athletics)
Florida is one of the two teams this year to join Jordan Brand. As Jordan is just a subset of Nike, not much changes outside of the logos. One potential change looks to be to the alternate white helmets. The Gators have worn these helmets the last few years with the Gators script on one side, and the F logo on the other. Hopefully this image is true and the script will be on both sides.
- LSU
LSU is celebrating 125 years of football this season. The Tigers revealed a special logo to commemorate, and the team will wear it as a patch throughout the season. LSU is no stranger to these anniversary patches, as they wore a 150 year logo for the university in 2010 and a 50th anniversary patch honoring the 1958 national championship team in 2008.
- Ole Miss
Ole Miss is embracing their “Land shark” moniker to start the season, wearing all white for the first time against Texas Tech. The Rebels/Black Bears/whatevers are planning to sport brand new white helmets and white facemasks. I’m one that thinks Ole Miss should never waiver from their navy and powder blue helmets. This alternate look for the Rebels fails to showcase any of the school’s navy color, and is incredibly lackluster to me. Ole Miss also revealed a new mascot along with a new logo hierarchy, which includes “landshark” style designs.
- Mississippi State
The Bulldogs have updated to the Primeknit A1 template from adidas and it has improved an already great look for State. Auburn Uniform Database friend Hail State Unis has much more coverage of the details, and you see side-by-side view of the changes here. I have really enjoyed the throwback look that Mississippi State has worn the last few years, and each tweak seems to improve it. This template, especially with the adidas logo moving from the center chest to the side, does wonders for it.
- Missouri
Mizzou looks to have a new white helmet option for 2018. This new design features the round tiger logo. They have previously worn a chrome silver tiger head logo on the white shells.
- Tennessee
According to friend of the Auburn Uniform Database Chad Fields, Tennessee will be making minor but impactful changes to their uniforms under first year head coach Jeremy Pruitt. The checkerboard striping on the helmet and pants legs that Nike implemented a few years back are expected to be replaced with the traditional solid striping. While this move is more traditional and historic for the Volunteers, the character of the checkerboard stripes will greatly be missed. The divisive Smokey Grey alternate uniforms will also not be worn going forward.
- Texas A&M
One of adidas’ premiere teams has upgraded to the newest Primeknit A1 template. The SEC logo has swapped to the left chest with the adidas logo moving to the right side.
Sun Belt
- Louisiana-Lafayette
The Ragin’ Cajuns have designated their primary and secondary helmets. The changes come with the 3D bumpers on the front and back, the EmbossTech American flag from Green Gridiron, and a special custom made warning decal in the shape of the state of Louisiana.
- Louisiana-Monroe
I love the new ULM logo, hearkening back to a previous design with the old Indians nickname. (image via Louisiana-Monroe Athletics)
UL-Monroe sported throwback uniforms last season to celebrate the anniversary of their 1987 FCS national championship. Those uniforms were apparently a big hit and will now be the primary uniforms. The university underwent a brand refresh last year and created a new logo, which was worn on the helmets last season. That was the basis for making last year’s throwbacks the new primaries.
- New Mexico State
The Aggies will reportedly have new white uniforms for the upcoming season. According to Paul Lukas, the home uniforms will go unchanged. Now the two uniforms no longer match.
- South Alabama
USA is moving to adidas after being with Nike the last seven years. With the move, South Alabama will be wearing the oldest template still offered by adidas, the Shockweb 1.0. The Jaguars will wear it for only a season due to adidas inventory issues and sake of consistency. The design is rather similar to the Nike uniforms, minus the pant stripes and a slightly different number font. Don’t expect South to continue to mix and match much this year as they did the previous two seasons. New head coach Steve Campbell is reportedly much more traditional in uniform tastes and will keep it more simple.
FCS Teams
- Abilene Christian
Slight changes for ACU football as the Wildcats are switching to matte purple helmets from gloss. They will also be paired with grey facemasks rather than black. The white helmets will also see a change, being paired with grey facemasks as well and adding a purple stripe down the center.
- Alabama A&M
The Bulldogs from Huntsville have revealed their first Nike uniforms, after wearing Russell Athletic for a long time. The new look is rather simple, with just a loop stripe on the shoulders and stripes on the pants, but it works well. The logo on the collar and pants and the large numbers are a big plus. Having the chestmark and the logo both might be too much, but I kind of like it here.
- Alabama State
With Russell Athletic exiting the uniform provider industry, SWAC teams were left to find new manufacturers. Alabama State signed with adidas.
- Cal Poly
The Mustangs are celebrating their 100th season of football. The logo will be worn on the jerseys as a patch.
- Central Arkansas
After wearing adidas uniforms for many years, Central Arkansas has switched to Nike. The new look features contrasting collars and shoulder caps (black on the purple jerseys, purple on white) with a Baylor-style set of stripes on the pants. The best photo shared so far is actually being modeled by the mascot.
- Davidson
New helmets are on tap for Davidson. The new satin red helmets are such a good look. I love the sheen of satin and it looks best on red. These compliment the previous black helmets quite well.
- Eastern Illinois
EIU has a new set of grey helmets and pants for 2018. The Panthers had previously worn black.
The Phoenix have new maroon and white jerseys this year, which basically just removed the side panels from 2017.
- Florida A&M
New satin orange helmets on tap for the Rattlers. The return of the striping is a really nice touch.
- Georgetown
The Hoyas have added new white helmets to their rotation this season. The bulldog logo is large on one side with the player number on the other.
- Grambling
HBCU teams are revealing new uniforms across the country as Russell Athletic, who had conference-wide apparel deals, has dropped out of the uniform game. Grambling has signed with adidas and revealed multiple new uniforms. The base black, gold, and white uniforms look really nice. The red set is where it might get a little divisive. Red has been a longtime tertiary color for the Tigers, as it has been used to represent the “blood of people of African decent.” The all red isn’t a terrible look, but it doesn’t work well when mixed with the other colors.
- Hampton
Hampton moves from the MEAC to the Big South Conference this season. The Pirates also signed a full partnership with Under Armour. Under Armour had provided uniforms the last few seasons, but Hampton had a shoe deal with Nike still.
- Howard
The Bison are celebrating their 125th season of football. Unlike other teams who have worn a patch, Howard is wearing special decals on the side of the helmet. The look is really different have has a ton of empty space for a helmet, but I really like this unique approach.
- Lafayette College
New uniforms for the Leopards, which have been upgraded to a new Nike template. The design is ultimately the same from last year. The helmets received an upgrade also, with chrome decals and 3D bumpers on the front and back.
- Maine
One of the best upgrades this season came from the northeast. The Black Bears are sticking with New Balance (a rarity) but dumped the piping for a fantastic set of stripes. The tapered pants stripe is the biggest drawback, but I’m a big fan of these otherwise.
- Mississippi Valley State
MVSU has a new helmet design this season, with the VS logo on the side with a flame stripe down the middle. The Devils have previously worn the V-State logo and a script Valley on the helmets.
- Montana State
UCLA stripes are a great way to make your uniforms look good. That’s what Montana State did when they upgraded their uniforms this season. Both the white and blue versions look fantastic and much better than the armpit/collarbone stripes.
- North Carolina A&T
New uniforms this season for the Aggies feature a heavy dose of anthracite. The two new jerseys and helmets feature very little blue. I imagine these will be used alongside the blue and yellow sets from last season.
- Penn
The Quakers have updated their white jerseys to match the navy set worn last year. The previous version, worn on an older template, had single colored numbers and had “Pennsylvania” written across the chest.
- Prairie View A&M
No more Russell Athletic uniforms for the Panthers, as they’ve revealed their new adidas uniforms. The purple numbers across the board are nice for consistency, but there’s no way they are legal on the grey and especially the purple tops. Also unfortunately, the yellow helmet has a really rough gradient fade to purple in the back.
- South Dakota State
New blue uniforms for the Jackrabbits this season. They moved the stripes from the shoulders to the collarbones to better match the white jerseys.
- Southeast Missouri State
Good striping and great colors make for a good uniform. (image via Southern Athletics)
The Redhawks have signed a multi-year deal with Under Armour after previously wearing Nike. They have yet to reveal their new uniforms.
- Southern
After years of Russell Athletic uniforms, the Southern Jaguars will wear Under Armour going forward. The collarbone stripe design isn’t anything new, but it looks fantastic in Southern’s light blue and yellow colors.
- Southern Illinois
The Saluki football team has new white helmets this season featuring the S logo on the left side and player number on the right. This will be the first white helmet option for SIU since 2011. Southern Illinois won a national championship, five conference titles, and made eight playoff appearances while wearing white helmets.
- Texas Southern
With Russell Athletic exiting the uniform business, SWAC teams were left to find new apparel providers. The Tigers signed on with Under Armour and revealed new maroon and white uniforms. Texas Southern also revealed a white helmet that will be worn this season.
- Towson
The Towson Tigers have signed a five year deal with Under Armour.
- UT-Martin
The Skyhawks have inked a new multi-year deal with Under Armour.
- Weber State
Weber State has new black helmet design and pants to match the black jerseys from last year. The Wildcats will debut the all black look on September 15th versus South Dakota. They will also be wearing some interesting throwback jerseys on September 22nd that feature two distinct styles of stripes.
- William & Mary
The Tribe has revealed a new branding style complete with new logos. The football helmets will reflect the logo change for the upcoming season.
- Wofford
The Terriors have signed a new deal with adidas through the 2024-25 season.
- Youngstown State
Small change for the Penguins who have added a stripe to their previously blank white pants.
Division 2 Teams
- Bowie State
New Under Armour uniforms with a great shoulder design for Bowie State. Looking at previous Russell Athletic designs, they’re no stranger from having interest shoulder cap uniforms.
- Central State
The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has signed a league-wide apparel contract with Nike. The Marauders of Central State have showcased their new Nike threads. They previously wore Russell Athletic uniforms.
- Colorado School of Mines
New throwback-inspired jerseys for the Orediggers with UCLA stripes along the shoulders.
- Millersville
The Marauders will be wearing new Under Armour uniforms this season, complete with a nice set of UCLA stripes on the shoulders and stripes across the front of the pants. Last year’s uniforms saw stripes that went from the collar around the chest to the armpit.
- Morehouse
The SIAC conference has agreed to a conference-wide deal with Nike after Russell Athletics exited. The Maroon Tigers revealed two new uniforms to mix and match. Both the black and white jerseys feature maroon collars and shoulder caps. The pants have stripes that bend backwards at the top.
- Northern Michigan
Green and yellow make for a great color combination. The Northern Michigan Wildcats have been able to wear it as well as anyone else. And the new throwback-style jerseys are fantastic. The template even makes these feel old-school without all the bells and whistles that Nike likes to throw in.
- Northwest Missouri State
The Bearcats have added new Missouri-shaped warning decals to their helmets.
- Oklahoma Baptist
The Bison have revealed a new anthracite uniform for this season. The shoulder stripes look a lot better than the previous set.
- Quincy
New uniforms for 2018 for the Quincy Hawks that are rather simple. The previous version had contrasting shoulder caps and stripes on the jerseys. The new tops have removed the small stripes on the shoulders and made the chest mark much larger. The white helmet looks to be new, and fades to yellow in the back.
- Shaw
Another case of Russell Athletic leaving an opening for new HBCU uniforms. The Shaw Bears have jumped on with Under Armour and went with a really classy simple uniform design. It’s a rather big departure from their look last season.
- Shorter
The Hawks from Rome, Georgia, will have a new pearly white helmet this season. Shorter had worn blue helmets in many iterations over the years. They will also be sporting new adidas uniforms this season, in blue, white, and black editions.
- Virginia State
Say goodbye to Russell Athletic and hello to Under Armour. The Trojans’ new uniforms sport a large set of stripes on the shoulders and a truncated stripe on the white pants.
- West Chester
When your nickname is the Rams, it’s hard not to mimic the shoulder horns of the NFL franchise. That’s what West Chester has done previously. This year, they’ve introduced a new white helmet that more so mimics LSU’s styling.
- West Georgia
West Georgia has jumped from Nike to adidas this off season. The new uniforms feature the UWG logo on the shoulder caps and a nice set of stripes on the pants.
- West Liberty
It’s not often teams will wear jerseys with entirely different designs. But the Hilltoppers are doing so this season. The yellow jerseys have a great set of shoulder stripes. They’ve actually worn this style before, but have tweaked (downgraded) the template. The new grey tops feature a new striping pattern, going across the chest.
Division 3 Teams
- Alfred State (Alfred, NY)
I love the new ox logos from Alfred State. I wish they would have mirrored the decals for the right side of the helmets though. (image via Alfred State Athletics)
The Pioneers have revealed a new brand in July, complete with brand new logo sets. The ox logo is fantastic! That change is reflected with the new helmets featuring the ox head. New Under Armour uniforms are on tap as well, with the ox head on the back as well. There’s even a new ox mascot for Alfred State.
- Alvernia (Reading, PA)
The Alvernia Golden Wolves are playing in their inaugural season of football. The Wolves will be have white jerseys and maroon pants, as well as an all grey set. Interesting that the grey uniform looks to be their designated color set. I would imagine they would have a maroon set as well, if not in the near future.
- Anna Maria College (Paxton, MA)
New white helmets on tap for the Amcats. The A logo will be placed on both sides. They have previously worn red helmets with player numbers and grey shells with a paw print decal.
- Augsburg (Minneapolis, MN)
The Auggies (great nickname) have switched from Nike to adidas for 2018. The new look will be a lot simpler, with only the maroon uniforms having shoulder stripes.
- Bethel (McKenzie, TN)
The Wildcats have a new look this season. The new Nike uniforms feature white helmets with player numbers, purple and white jerseys with a nice set of stripes, and white and yellow pants.
- Christopher Newport (Newport News, VA)
New Under Armour uniforms with a great shoulder cap design are on tap for the Captains this year. They wore Russell Athletic uniforms last season.
- Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA)
The Red Devils have seemingly tweaked their white helmet, going from a red-outlined pitchfork to a red logo outlined in black.
- Endicott (Beverly, MA)
Eagle wings, nice color scheme, and the beach. Perfection. (image via Endicott Athletics)
The Gulls will be wearing a new white helmet this season with a nicely colored version of the Philadelphia Eagles wing decals this season. They’ve worn blue shells in the past.
- Hampden-Sydney College (Hampden Sydney, VA)
New black uniforms are on tap for the Tigers this season. The numbers seem to have a sublimated pattern similar to the shoulder caps on their garnet set.
- MacMurray College (Jacksonville, IL)
The Fighting Highlanders have teased their new white Under Armour uniforms, but haven’t actually shown off the entire look just yet. I like the red tops that were worn last year. The white jerseys needed an upgrade, but I don’t believe they are going to match the reds.
- Marietta College (Marietta, OH)
The Pioneers have a new turf field design this year, featuring grey and dark grey field lines and navy endzones.
- McMurry University (Abilene, Texas)
The War Hawks are moving on from Russell Athletic as they have now signed with adidas. They’re new threads look to be a very simple approach, with some shoulder design (maybe wings?). Unfortunately there was only a single photo available at the time of publishing.
- Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA)
The Grey Hounds will be wearing new white helmets with chrome blue decals this season. They previously wore matte grey lids.
- University of New England (Biddeford, ME)
2018 marks the first season of varsity football for the New England Nor’Easters. They will be playing on a new turf field that is a very rich shade of blue.
- University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Belton, TX)
The UMHB Crusaders have new all-gold uniforms. The striping has changed a bit with the template upgrade.
- Waynesburg University (Waynesburg, PA)
The Yellow Jackets have debuted a new orange jersey for 2018 as well as a new helmet design, which is the “first major helmet overhaul in over a decade.” The new helmets look to be matte grey with orange stripes and features the Yellow Jacket logo on the sides. Waynesburg previously wore white helmets with orange W logos.
Another year and another large group of teams across the country making some sort of change. This year consisted more of tweaks and template changes, but for the most part, I think they were all for the better.
While the pendulum continue to swings away from the crazy, over-the-top designs back to simple and classic looks, it will be interesting to watch how the rest of the year – and the coming years – play out. The college football season is a long one, and there are plenty of opportunities for teams to break out alternates not mentioned here. Those could always push the envelope a bit more once again. They’ll be bound to create a conversation, as always.
Thanks as always to all the teams and equipment managers for sharing the images of their respective new uniforms. And for Uni-Watch and Sportslogos.net forums for helping showcase all the new details.

2017 NCAA Uniform Recap
/0 Comments/by Clint RichardsonThe summer is tough for any sports fan, with few athletic events in action. That is even more true for college athletic fans, and even more so for football fans. But the summer isn’t completely dry of all action, as this is the time that teams reveal their new uniform plans for the upcoming season. With athletic uniforms becoming more of a big deal than ever, more teams join the party each year. This large undertaking, documenting each uniform change made public prior to the beginning of the season, is one of my favorite projects each year. Last year’s edition saw over 115 teams listed. This year, the list has topped 120. The teams listed below have announced a range of the smallest changes to full out new uniforms. A few things before we dive in to the individual teams:

The new Schutt F7 (image via Uni-Watch)
There are two new helmets on the market now. The first is the Schutt F7. Schutt, along with Michael Princip, have developed a new helmet model to hopefully help cut down on the risk of head injuries and concussions. The F7 features plates that detach from the shell completely. The padded plates can be removed and replaced easily if needed. The helmet isn’t the most aesthetically appealing model on the market, as the ridges on the top run where a typical helmet stripe would be placed. Teams can take two approaches to this – cut the stripe or run the stripe over the gaps. We have seen teams take both approaches with the Riddell SpeedFlex the last couple of years. UniWatch has a great breakdown of the helmet and an interview with Princip, whose ideas led to the development of the helmet. Schutt predicts that about 60 NFL and collegiate teams will sport the new helmet this season. Per the Schutt Twitter account, some teams have “only a few, others a dozen” of the helmet.
The other helmet, the Vicis Zero1, is a little different. Vicis is a company that was born out of the NFL’s concussion prevention campaign, which has handed out grants to companies to help develop a new, safer helmet. The Vicis helmets are a complete rethinking of the traditional helmet. The Zero1 features a “softer” outer shell with multiple layers of protection underneath. The Vicis Zero1 helmet currently costs teams about $1,500 a piece, so it will certainly see a slower rollout than competitors.
The Vapor Untouchable creates a much cleaner look. The bottom of the collar features a mesh section. (image via Oregon Live)Nike revealed their newest template, the Vapor Untouchable, in December of 2015. Naturally, Oregon was the first to wear it, sporting the new look for their Alamo Bowl game. The template has been very popular, as the entire jersey is simplified to three different pieces, rather than the many panels sewn together as on the previous templates. Rather than having a separate material for the mesh and solid pieces, the air holes are laser cut, reducing weight and other scientific blah-blah that Nike likes to force into their press releases. What you need to know about it is that it’s a much cleaner look overall. Also, the biggest “design” difference is that you won’t be seeing the highly unsightly “sweat boxes” that appear much darker than the rest of the jersey after a player has perspired. The majority of Nike teams, especially the power five schools, have changed to the new template.
Now on to the teams, broken down by conference:
American Athletic
- Navy
- The Naval Academy has updated their uniforms this season. The first Under Armour set from a few years ago placed stripes representing the six active Naval fleets horizontally across the chest. The stripes have been moved to the shoulders and pants. The stripes sit on a blue field on the white jerseys, which contrast well. I liked the previous set fine, but these are also really nice.
- Tulane
-
ANGRY WAVE ALERT!! Perhaps my new favorite college logo, Tulane will be placing the Angry Wave logo at midfield on their turf field.
-
- Tulsa
- Tulsa has a new turf field this year with a slightly different look. The new endzones have stacked “Golden Hurricanes” whereas the previous design did not.
- UCF
- A lot of small details out of Orlando. A team spokesperson told UniWatch that the team will have dozens of potential combinations this season, and plans to wear a different combination each week. There will also be multiple different nose bumper decals. One will feature the player’s home area code, one for military appreciation, and one for the different sides of the ball – UCFast for the offense, and UCFierce for the defense.
ACC
- Clemson
- The defending national champions have joined the long list of teams with the Nike Vapor Untouchable. This marks the third different template Clemson has worn in the last three years.
- Florida State
- Florida State has updated templates as well. We haven’t seen the game jerseys as of yet, but the retail versions showcase the upgrade.
- Georgia Tech
- The lone Power 5 team sticking with Russell Athletics will be looking for a new uniform provider after this season. It seems as though Russell is dropping out of the collegiate uniform business, so the Yellow Jackets will be taking bids this winter for a new provider.

- The lone Power 5 team sticking with Russell Athletics will be looking for a new uniform provider after this season. It seems as though Russell is dropping out of the collegiate uniform business, so the Yellow Jackets will be taking bids this winter for a new provider.
- Miami
- After reverting to a more traditional design last season, Miami will be breaking out the alternate uniforms this year. A new green set, dubbed “State of Miami,” will be worn on September 23rd versus Toledo. The “Miami Nights” all black uniforms will be saved for the October 12th matchup against Georgia Tech. The green jerseys look great. I think the green pants are a little much, though. I honestly don’t hate the black uniforms, aside from the helmet. The black jerseys look good to me (which I don’t say often for BFBS uniforms), but the helmets feel unnecessary, even though the white helmet would be even more out of place. I think the worst part to me is the green stripe almost gets lost on the black shells. Yea, it matches the jersey and pant stripes, but I think white somewhere on the helmet striping would have improved this look.
- North Carolina
- The home of Michael Jordan will be sporting the Jordan Brand on more than just the basketball uniforms. A year after Michigan was the first football team to ever wear the Jumpman logo, UNC joins the ranks. The template itself is simply Nike’s Vapor Untouchable with the Swoosh logo swapped with the legendary basketball logo. The uniform design stays the same, which is a great thing, as the Tar Heels hold one of the best designs in the current landscape of collegiate uniforms. Also, a new navy set of jerseys and pants are available. This is another good decision, as that eliminates the need for an all black uniform. The Tar Heels will also be sporting new 3D Bumpers on the back of their helmets. UNC will continue to look good this year, especially on the newest template.

- North Carolina St
- NC State is celebrating 125 years of football, and will be wearing helmet decals with the commemorative logo. The Wolfpack also has another new black alternate uniform, dubbed “Black Howl” this year. Laughable name aside, the design isn’t terrible. It’s not great, but it could be better if it weren’t for the typical adidas design aspects – Shockweb tiretreads, chrome/tinfoil numbers and stripes. The shoulder stripes look awfully similar to the 2012 SMU uniforms, but I think they look good (of course without the adidas crap). I love seeing the old school Wolf logo on the helmet. A team spokesperson said that it will be worn a few times this year, in addition to the black helmets.
- Pitt
- Pitt revealed new uniforms last year and thankfully reclaimed the much better their wonderful script logo. Nike and Pitt are currently working on creating a new secondary logo (presumably a new cougar) and the possibility of changing the school’s colors from the current navy and dark gold to the older lighter blue and yellow gold.
- Virginia Tech
- The Hokies are celebrating 125 years of football this season. They have added new 3D back bumpers to match the front.
Big 12
- Iowa State
The Cyclones are looking to revamp their image. According to head coach Matt Campbell, “I can tell you our entire image will change here shortly.” No word if that will come during the 2017 season or in future years.
- Oklahoma
New Nike template for the Sooners. There are rumors that Oklahoma may have more alternates in store this season.
- TCU
TCU joins the long list of teams with the new template. The Horned Frogs will also wear 3D Bumpers on the front and back of the helmets.
- Texas
The Longhorns have upgraded Nike templates
- Texas Tech
Small change for the Red Raiders, as the team has dumped their custom font. The jerseys and turf now feature a more traditional block font, which is much more pleasing.
Big Ten
- Illinois
The Illini have removed the striping from the helmets. I liked the striping, but think this might be addition by subtracting. The school has also scrapped their academic logo, going all in on the block I logo. Apparently the University of Illinois school system had over 800 logos at one point.
- Indiana
Small change for Indiana, as the font for the player nameplates has changed. The new font is the same that was previously used on the candy cane striped uniforms. The old font was an adidas font that was much more rounded.
- Iowa
The Hawkeyes have a new midfield logo on their turf. Funny enough, it breaks the school’s own brand standards, having the black logo placed on a dark background. The Hawkeyes will also reportedly have some sort of alternate uniforms in store this season.
- Maryland
The Terrapins have a new logo to celebrate their 125th season of football. Maryland has also revealed a new uniform for the season. They are gold throwback jerseys with horizontal stripes on the chest, black pants, and feature player numbers on the helmet, rather similar to last year’s throwbacks.
- Michigan
The first Jordan Brand team has updated to Nike’s Vapor Untouchable template.
- Michigan State
The Spartans have updated templates, moving to the Vapor Untouchable. The new pants feature a similar stripe to the old set, but now reach to the top of the pants. I think if you are going to have the odd cutoff like Michigan State does, you might as well truncate the stripe on both ends. Also, the Spartans will be wearing all white for the first time since 1954. Apparently white helmets are considered bad luck for MSU, so this might not go over very well.
- Minnesota
Once wearing anthracite alternate uniforms, the Golden Gophers haven’t worn a different uniform in a while. That will reportedly change this year, as a new anthracite uniform is in the works.
- Nebraska
Nebraska has faux-mesh numbers on their throwbacks. (image via adidas)
Nebraska isn’t new to the alternate uniform world under adidas. They have worn a different uniform for the last few years. This season’s alternate is much tamer than previous designs. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of their latest national championship, Nebraska has special jerseys that have mesh-like numbers. The numbers, naturally, are meant to represent the old manufacturing style used in the 1990s. The old school sleeve stripes are also now available on a base layer shirt. The biggest mistake is that the sleeve numbers weren’t actually mesh, as the shoulder yoke and the body of the jersey were made of two different materials.
- Ohio State
The Buckeyes have moved on to the newest Nike template. Ohio State will also be one of four teams using special game balls with sublimated graphics. Buckeye leaves and the O-State logo will don one panel of the football.
- Penn State
One of the traditional uniform teams, Penn State will be wearing throwback uniforms. The changes are small enough that a casual fan might not notice a change, but there is plenty to discuss. The team will be wearing grey facemasks and player numbers on the helmets. The jersey features white sleeve cuffs, a slightly different number font, and a blue-on-blue logo on the chest. A stripe is also added to the pants, and the socks will also be striped.
- Rutgers
After a rather successful redesign a few years back, Rutgers has completely jumped off the Nike ship and swam directly to adidas. The new uniforms are rather similar to a previous Rutgers set, just placed on the latest adidas template (which is actually rather outdated at this point). A New Jersey state patch has been added to the back of the jerseys, just below the collar. Much like the Nike set, a black uniform set is available, featuring the alternate knight logo on the helmets.
- Wisconsin
Another team celebrating a big milestone, the Badgers have a new logo for 100 years of their stadium. They will also have new game balls this year with the logo sublimated on one of the panels. They are one of four teams with special sublimated footballs this season.
Conference USA
- Marshall
After adding new articles the last few years, Marshall now has a new white jersey and set of black pants. The white tops match the green and black worn in previous years, with contrasting shoulder caps featuring the M logo (which seems rather low, no?). With these new additions, the Thundering Herd have a base of nine different combinations. The team still plans to wear their American flag design helmets and 75 memorial decals, which means Marshall may not repeat a combination this year. They will also be adding player names on the backs after going NNOB for years.
- Middle Tennessee
MTSU has revealed new uniforms set on the new Nike template. The old catalog-picked design with contrasting shoulder caps and pants stripe are gone, and another catalog-chosen design is in. The new uniforms are incredibly simple, featuring a single color across the jersey and pants, in both blue and white. The collars are grey on both sets, meant to “embrace the Middle Tennessee brand,” whatever that means. The pants both have “RAIDERS” on the leg, which blends in too much on the whites to even be seen.
- North Texas
The Mean Green have revealed a new set of uniforms for the season. A new set of green, white, and black uniforms feature a nice sublimated pattern on the shoulder caps that draw inspiration from the school’s logo.
- Rice
The Owls have a new set of logos, and the jerseys have been updated to reflect the change. The new wordmark now sits front and center. The new logos look good, but I will miss the Old English style font. Per Uni-Watch, Rice will once again wear their special helmet decals – USA flag and pink – this season. The pink will appear for a game in October, while the flag design will be worn on October 7th versus Army.
- Southern Miss
The Golden Eagles have a new gold jersey that matches the black and white tops. Also, Southern Miss will be sporting some beautiful 1997-inspired throwbacks this year.
- UAB
With #TheReturn of UAB football, the Blazers have signed a new deal with Under Armour, who has also recently opened a field office in downtown Birmingham. The new uniforms are actually rather similar to the Nike uniforms worn the last season of play. The jerseys have contrasting colored shoulder caps, but feature a better number font. The shoulders have a lightly sublimated pattern. The helmets see the biggest change, as the beloved dragon scale helmets are no more. Instead, UAB will be using simple white or gold shells with the dragon logo. A few concept helmets have floated around, but I personally think these will not see the field. ESPN’s Marty Smith has stated that UAB might use the green helmets one day, but I suspect they would be drastically different than pictured. You can read even more about the new uniforms here.
- Western Kentucky
With Russell Athletics seemingly exiting the collegiate uniform producer role, Western Kentucky has signed on with Nike. The new uniforms aren’t a big departure from the last design, but are certainly much simpler. The jerseys are plain white and red, and the pants feature the team nickname on the white pants. The black pants look much better without the team name. Oddly enough, WKU isn’t wearing the Vapor Untouchable template, instead going with the Vapor Pro, which is a hybrid of the Untouchable and the old Mach Speed template. The Pro is being offered mostly to lower tiered collegiate teams and high schools.
MAC
The MAC will be following the SEC’s lead from last year and be honoring those players that have graduated but still have eligibility left by special graduate patches.
- Akron
A few items regarding Akron from UniWatch: The team will wear throwback helmets for their homecoming game against Ball State on October 7th. The helmet will be different than last year’s design. Last year, the Zips wore helmets that featured a full body kangaroo, named “Roo,” on the sides. They will once again wear the “Full Roo” helmets, but again, in a different style from last year.
- Ball State
The Cardinals have a new helmet option – an all black shell with an oversized logo on one side, and the school wordmark on the others. It’s not a great look, but at least it isn’t a player number. Ball State also has a new pair of black pants that will most likely be paired with all three jersey sets. The all black set will be worn on November 21st against Miami (OH).
New black helmets on tap for Ball State. (image via Ball State Equipment)- Bowling Green
For the second year in a row, Bowling Green will wear special military appreciation helmets. These are different than most, as the logos and stripes will have the names of University students that died serving their country. I don’t like military appreciation or any other “special cause” uniforms, but I love the way the Falcons make it connect back to the school. Last year’s helmets were orange, whereas this year’s are brown with chrome orange facemasks.
- Eastern Michigan
Some programs like to take on an image and stick with it. That holds true with the Eastern Michigan Eagles. They have added a diamond-plate “tough” look to their uniforms the last few years, and more comes this year. The Eagles will be wearing “Factory Steel” slate grey alternate helmets this season. The back bumpers of the helmets feature a nice factory skyline. Eastern Michigan also has a new white jersey, complete with diamond-plate numbers. The previous white set had eagle wings on the shoulders.
- Kent State
New turf field has been installed for the Golden Flashes. The midfield logo is larger than previous years, and the endzones are colored.
- Ohio
Another team leaving Russell Athletics, Ohio has signed on with adidas. Thankfully, the uniforms are rather unchanged. The great shoulder stripes are still in place, albeit a much smaller size.
- Toledo
The Rockets have changed from Under Armour to Nike. The new uniforms are a massive downgrade, going from a nice look with Under Armour to a basic, catalog design. The shoulder stripes are similar to the old Arizona uniforms. Toledo will also sadly stick with their multiple not-so-great helmet options.
- Western Michigan
With PJ Fleck leaving for Minnesota and taking his infamous and trademarked “Row the Boat” phrase with him, Western Michigan needed to replace the uniforms that Fleck left his mark on. Say goodbye to the boat ores and hello to some beautiful shoulder stripes. The game jerseys look similar to what the Broncos have been practicing with. There is still more to come for WMU, as black jerseys, brown jersey, and a different white jersey coming. New head coach Tim Lester let the team decide what they wanted to wear on the chest – “Western Michigan,” “Broncos,” “WMU.” The players decided to have one of each. This will also be the first year since before Fleck was coach that the team will have gold pants. There will also be three different helmets to mix and match with.
Mountain West
- Air Force
To commemorate the beginning of the Air Force, the football team will be wearing a special 70th anniversary patch for their October 14th game against UNLV.
- Boise State
It’s been a while since Boise has seen new uniforms, which makes this new design much more intriguing. The previous set was rather bland, with no striping and just off-white/chrome numbering. I really like the striping used on the shoulders, but it feels off to have them only there. I think keeping the striping and adding it somewhere to the pants would have been a much better way to complete the look. The biggest downfall is that the Broncos will continue to sport the old helmet design, with the oversized logo on one side (which looks good) and player number on the opposite (which doesn’t).
- Colorado State
The Rams have a new turf field design. I like the stripes located on the player bench area, but not sure how often they will be seen. The team also is the first to add specific branding to one helmet model. The Riddell RevoSpeed has a small rubber piece just behind the facemask on the sides. Most teams remove this piece, and leave It blank for the season. Colorado State, instead, will be placing custom decals here to make sure you know which team you are watching.
- Hawaii
Hawaii will be sporting new matte green helmets this season. They had previously worn white and glossy green helmets, so expect to see all three in rotation. The school also announced that they will be a full Under Armour school starting this year. The five year deal is worth just over $10.2 million.
- Nevada
Last year, Nevada spoke about the inability to update uniforms every so often due to budget concerns. This year, the Wolf Pack has their new uniforms. Gone is the dated UCONN/Miami look and in is a verysimple, plain design. “Battle Born” dons the side of the leg. It’s interesting to see the team wearing the school name on the road jerseys, and the teamnickname on the homes. This is typically used in baseball and basketball, and not many football teams follow this route. The helmets feature asymmetric decals, with team script on the right and the logo on the left.
- San Jose State
The Spartans have scrapped one of my favorite designs in favor to join adidas. From what we have seen so far, the jersey design won’t be changed too much, other than the Shockweb 2.0 template. I hope they return the yellow pants from the last few seasons. Oddly enough (and not too entirely uncommon in the lower ranks), San Jose State had been wearing their now-old Nike jerseys during practice until the adidas practice tops came in. You do what you have to do when budgets are tight.
- UNLV
UNLV released a new logo this summer to replace the old Rebel head logo. The logo looks good, and came with a ton of symbolism. The new logo was never well received, called “controversial” by some, and was eventually scrapped altogether.
Pac 12
- Arizona
A few years sporting the red and blue rainbow design, Arizona has moved on to a newer look. Unfortunately, the new uniforms are more similar to the previous look. The best design is the white jersey, which features a nice balance of red and blue. The shoulder stripes also have this odd faux-mesh pattern for some reason. The worst part of the redand blue jerseys is the lack of white. White would have cleaned up both looks so much. They could also fix the helmets by adding contrasting facemasks. The all red, especially, is really brutal.
- Cal
After many years with Nike, Cal has moved on to join Under Armour. Gone are the oversized collars and the front-facing bear logo, and in is a new, classic looking bear secondary logo, and a nice custom stripe. The Sather Stripe, like many of today’s design motifs, was designed after one of the iconic buildings on campus – Sather Tower. The stripe shows up on the sleeves and pants on the uniforms, as well as the endzones on the new turf field. The field also has an awesome feature that highlights the Hayward fault that the stadium straddles. Unfortunately, the fault is only marked behind the endzones. Would have been awesome to see it run across the entire field. The online stores have also seemingly leaked a gold version of the uniform. Cal has what may be my favorite uniform of the summer.
- Oregon
Oregon is the top of the collegiate uniform world. But each year, they have kept a tight grasp over the new designs. This year, with new coach Willie Taggart, the Ducks are going to tone back the number of uniforms. We haven’t seen any designs for the upcoming season, so those will probably be revealed much closer to game day.
- Oregon State
Demon Beaver returns. (image via Oregon State Athletics)
The Beavers will be sporting new “11 strong”uniforms on September 9th against Minnesota. These new uniforms feature a black helmet with a steel “Demon Beaver” decal, a lighter shade of grey used on the jersey, which has a darker grey, almost black set of Northwestern stripes, and a dark grey pair of pants with an orange stripe on the side. I want to like these, but feel they are a few tweaks away from being really nice. The only orange – a school color – on the entire uniform is in the small details – the helmet stripe and Demon eyes, the Nike swoosh and patch details on the chest, and the stripe on the pants. If, at the very least, the jersey numbers were outlined in orange, it would really work better to me. Make the shoulder stripes orange rather than tone-on-tone to where they are barely visible, and you will have a fantastic looking jersey.
- Stanford
The Cardinal have updated to the newest Nike template.
- UCLA
Another California team has signed on with Under Armour. The new UCLA uniforms do what needed to be done for a long time – eliminate navy. The powder blue is such a better look, especially in comparison to the uniforms featuring both shades. The new Under Armour template allows for a much better rendition of the UCLA shoulder stripes than adidas was able to replicate over the last half-decade or so. The one item that was neglected was the number font, as the Bruins should still return the traditional Clarendon numerals full time.
- USC
Add the Trojans to the long list of teams upgrading Nike templates.
- Utah
Another design that grew on me is now gone. The Utah Utes have new uniforms that no longer use the cartoon-ish mountain design on the shoulder caps. This season, they will be wearing uniforms that feature the “Utah stripe,” with each jersey having contrasting colored shoulder caps. These uniforms would be rather nice if it weren’t for the pants. The striping down the pants is great, until they take a near-90* turn and wrap around the back of the thigh.
- Washington State
The Cougars might have been one of the first teams to reveal a very simple uniform design this year. The previous set was pretty good, having only a simple stripe around the shoulder caps. The new uniforms are completely devoid of stripes, sticking with a solid color. They don’t look bad, but it feels like a downgrade from the previous look. It looks like they will have a lighter grey and a dark, anthracite uniform, which seems excessive.
SEC
- Alabama
Alabama joins the long list of teams wearing the Nike Vapor Untouchable template.
- Arkansas
Small change for Arkansas, as the Razorbacks have added captaincy patches to their jerseys. Arkansas will also be honoring the passing of Razorback legend Frank Broyles this season. The specifics have yet to be determined.
- Auburn
This year marks the 125th season of Auburn football, so naturally there is a commemorative logo. Unfortunately, the Tigers will not be wearing this logo on the uniforms at all. It will only be used for marketing purposes. Auburn is another team that will be using custom watermarked footballs, with the seldom used (nearly retired) Tiger Eyes logo on one of the panels. Auburn will also be joining the list of teams using 3D Bumpers.
- Florida
The Gators will be wearing the new Nike templateas well this year. Florida decided to make some minor changes with the update. The Nike swoosh and Gator head have swapped places on both the jerseys and pants. The Gator logo no longer interrupts the pants striping either. The orange uniforms now have matching stripes as well. The old set had a space between the blue and white stripes on the jerseys, but not the pants. Unfortunately, the white helmet with the two different decals and tapered striping are still in the arsenal to be used this year. A normal stripe and picking one helmet logo would make this a great alternate helmet.
- Georgia
One of the many teams moving to the Nike Vapor Untouchable template. The new template does wonders for the Bulldogs – like all the other teams. Small changes, as the G-logo and the Nike swoosh have changed sides on the new pants. A brand new black jersey is also going to be worn at some point during the season.
- Kentucky
The new template shortens LSU shoulder stripes. (image via And The Valley Shook)
Kentucky has sold their souls to the devil naming rights to Commonwealth Stadium, which now becomes Kroger Field.
- LSU
LSU has gone to the new Nike Vapor Untouchable template. Where this template has worked wonders for others, I don’t think it works as well for teams with UCLA stripes. I loved the longer striping the Tigers and Ole Miss and others have been wearing, and they are all back to shorter stripes now. LSU wore shorter stripes previously, but the longer stripes were much better. The Tigers will also have 3D Bumpers on the back of the helmet now.
- Mississippi State
The Miss. State Bulldogs have been one of the better dressed SEC teams as of late, since they reverted to a throwback uniform design. This season, the Bulldogs have taken to clean up their look across the board. Black has been removed from the uniforms, and the shoulder stripes now better match the pants. If Mississippi State can keep from the typical black alternates, or other crazy designs, the Bulldogs could very well be a top team this year, aesthetically at least. Be sure to read more about the new uniforms from AUD friend Hail State Unis.
- Missouri
Another team joining the Vapor Untouchable ranks, Missouri goes a step further. Gone are the grey/anthracite shoulder yokes for a much cleaner look for the Tigers. We haven’t seen the other jerseys yet, but expect them to mimic the whites already released.
- Ole Miss
The Rebels have updated templates and the shoulder stripes have taken a big hit in length, much like LSU.
- Tennessee
The Vols are added to the Vapor Untouchablelist. One news story out of Knoxville that has been rather divisive on Twitter is regarding QB Quinten Dormady. Dormady has elected to go with old-school sleeves on his jersey, rather than the newer tight sleeves. He claims he wants to look like famed Vols QB Peyton Manning, so maybe they’ll work. I love seeing the sleeves, regardless of how goofy they may look.
- Texas A&M
adidas and Texas A&M have revealed their newest monstrosity design. The Aggies will be sporting “Bright Lights” uniforms at home on October 28th against Mississippi State. These new uniforms are all maroon with black details. The black details are unfortunately the Shockweb “tiretreads” design that adidas has been infamous for the last few years. It seems incredibly asinine to make the manufacturer’s “iconic” design element the main aspect of the uniforms. The Shockweb is even placed over the numbers. Texas A&M has had a great looking uniform the last few years, sticking with their traditional double shoulder yoke stripes, and the controversial beveling on the numbers. Both of those are gone with this new set. The beveling is only available on the large hip logo. The helmet logo goes sans-bevel in a chrome detailing. The helmet also transitions from maroon to black. The jersey looks worse when held outside of the controlled photo shoot lighting.

Sun Belt
- Arkansas State
The Red Wolves are celebrating ten years since they changed nicknames from the Indians in 2008. The commemorative logo will not be worn on the uniforms.
- Appalachian State
The Mountaineers have updated at least their yellow jerseys to the new Vapor Untouchable template. They also will be wearing new 3D back bumpers. They wore the front bumpers last season.
- Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers will be sporting new teal uniforms. (image via Coastal Carolina Athletics)
After playing their first year in FBS as an independent, the newest Sun Belt member has a new teal uniform. I’m glad to see one team actually embracing their beautiful color (looking at you, Jacksonville!). The Chanticleers also have made a change to their helmets, ditching the matte helmets for the previous glossy black helmet with golden flakes.
- Georgia Southern
The Eagles will be changing from traditional glossy helmets to the trendy matte helmets. I think the Georgia Southern shade of blue works well with this finish. They still need to add the awesome academic logo to the helmet full time.
- Georgia State
One of the younger FBS programs is moving up with their own stadium. After playing in the Georgia Dome the last few years, Georgia State has purchased the old Turner Field from the Atlanta Braves as they moved into their own new stadium. Turner Field has been turned in to a really nice looking stadium for the Panthers. They also have a logo for the first season in the new stadium. The Panthers also will sport new uniforms in the new stadium, having changed from Nike to Under Armour. So far, we have yet to see the new uniforms.
- Louisiana-Monroe
ULM honors the past with throwback helmets (image via ULM Equipment)
To celebrate the 1987 FCS national championship, the Warhawks will be sporting throwback uniforms. The helmets feature the brand new academic logo, which is actually an ingenious play on the original logo. The school was nicknamed the Indians at the time, and renamed in 2006 due to NCAA restrictions against Native American imagery. The P-40 Warhawks uniforms will also be worn again this year.
- New Mexico State
The Aggies broke out new Under Armour uniforms last season. This year, they received a new black alternate uniform. The uniforms feature the year’s popular collarbone stripe template, with the pant striping taking a sharp turn to the front of the leg. The alternate crossed guns logo shows up on the shoulder caps. Hopefully they won’t wear the helmets with the same logo, as that would be a little overkill.
- Texas State
The Bobcats have revealed a new set of gold jerseys and pants for the upcoming season. The new jerseys have what looks to be claw-scratches in the numbers. Not sure what use it holds, but the numbers apparently are incredibly reflective. Also, a new set of secondary logos are now available for Texas State.
- Troy
Troy has added a new chrome red helmet to their arsenal. They previously had a matte red helmet. This will be switched out with chrome silver and matte white shells. The Trojans will also have new red jerseys and white pants.
Independent
- Army
Last season, Army cornerback Brandon Jackson was killed in a car wreck a few hours after a win over Rice. His teammates will continue to wear a memorial decal on the back of their helmets up through the time that Jackson would graduate.
- BYU
BYU will sport a patch to honor the passing of legendary and Hall of Fame coach Lavell Edwards. (image via BYU Athletics)
The Cougars will be wearing a patch to honor the passing of Hall of Fame coach Lavell Edwards. Edwards passed away in December. Edwards coached BYU to a national championship in 1984 and coached the school’s only Heisman Trophy winner.
- Notre Dame
Another team using a special sublimated gameball, Notre Dame will have a large ND logo sublimated behind the traditional “Play Like a Champion Today” phrase. Even though the Irish won’t be playing in a Shamrock Series game this year, there will be a special alternate uniform to be worn. Notre Dame just finished a massive renovation project to the stadium. The Irish will celebrate the history of the stadium and the program by honoring iconic player and coach Knute Rockne. The alternate uniforms try to mimic the uniforms worn during the the 1920s and 1930s. The jerseys are navy with gold accents, the pants are gold, and the helmets and cleats are brown to represent the leather worn in the past. The shoulder caps feature quotes from a Rockne pep speech that was also recited in the movie about the famed coach. The ND logo on the chest and football is the same as used in the Rockne-era. Each player will wear Rockne’s surname on their nameplates for the game versus Navy, a long time rival of Rockne’s Notre Dame teams. The numbers also feature diagonal striping sublimated that is meant to represent the striping in the endzones. The team has also been wearing shamrock pride stickers in practice. No word if those will transition on to the game helmets.
FCS Teams
- Albany
Albany looks to have a new anthracite jersey this season. The Danes also showcased multiple helmet designs – most of which had been worn before. I believe the USA Flag is the only new one of the group.
- Cal Poly
After sporting Nike uniforms last season, Cal Poly has moved on to adidas. The new adidas threads have a set of catalog-picked stripes on the shoulders. It looks as though there will be an American flag inspired helmet to be worn at some point.
- Colgate
New white/silver helmets for Colgate.(image via Colgate Equipment)
The ever popular Navy helmet design is seen each year at every level of play. This year, Colgate is taking it in a different approach, adding a stripe to the design. The striping feels jarring as it ends where the grey area begins. There is also no secondary stripe with the back end, which makes it look a little empty. The Raiders also have new road uniforms that feature a nice set of stripes on contrasting colored shoulder caps.
- Cornell
The Ivy League Big Red team has updated their red jerseys to the Nike Vapor Pro template.
- Duquesne
Moving from adidas to Nike, Duquesne has revealed their new uniforms. The new uniforms are based on the old Arizona dot-matrix stripes that are found in the Nike catalogs. The old set was littered with odd piping. Popular design aside, it’s a good look and upgrade for the Dukes.
- East Tennessee State
Back in 2015, the ETSU football program was reinstated after a decade absence. This year, the Buccaneers will be playing in a brand new on-campus stadium. The new stadium is rather small, seating about 10,000, but will look amazing. It’s great to see programs do more with less.
- Furman
The 2017 Kansas State Furman Paladins (image via Furman Athletics)
The Paladins have updated to the Vapor Pro template, and have a great new design with great striping. They look similar to Kansas State in terms of color and design, but have a Baylor-like bend to the top of the pant stripes.
- Indiana State
The Sycamores have made a minor update to their helmets, specifically the decals. Rather than having the font in blue with a white and then black stroke, the new decals will have a black font, blue stroke, and finally a silver, chrome-ish outer stroke.
- Jacksonville
The Dolphins will be wearing gold helmets this season. They have previously been wearing white and green shells.
- James Madison
After a few years of wearing old Arizona-style uniforms, James Madison has a new set of custom uniforms. The defending FCS national champions will be sporting Vapor Untouchable uniforms that have the royal bulldog logo sublimated on the shoulder caps. The full color bulldog logo is placed on the chest. A purple, white, and black version of each jersey and pants (and possibly helmets) will be available to mix and match. I would expect to see a few different helmet designs like they have worn in the past. This look is such an upgrade over the previous set, and might honestly be one of the better looks of the season.
- Lamar
The Cardinals sported some new Under Armour uniforms two years ago, and they have gone and redesigned them once again. The old set had contrasting shoulder caps with an odd but interesting vertical stripe. The new jerseys are donned with collarbone stripes. The pants feature stripes that take a sharp 90* turn to the front of the pants. The helmets also feature a stripe that turns from red to black on the back and have the school name written vertically down the shell.
- McNeese State
The Cowboys look to have added striping to their game helmets. They have previously gone stripe-less and even wearing a single stripe with their throwback uniforms.
- Monmouth
Yet another team switching manufacturers, Monmouth has dumped Nike for Under Armour. Much like the old set, the new uniforms are rather plain, coming in all blue or all white.
- Montana State
The Bobcats have a new grey alternate uniform for the season. The new jerseys feature gold contrasting shoulder caps with grey stripes. They will also have grey pants to match. Also, a new turf design that showcases the program’s national championships on the sidelines.
- North Dakota
The Fighting Hawks wore new adidas uniforms last season, but have added a new ND patch for the upcoming season.
- Northern Arizona
The Lumberjacks have new adidas uniforms which limit the use of their very bright shade of yellow. Previously, the yellow was placed on the shoulder yoke of the home uniforms, and even were prevalent on the main pair of pants. The relegation feels like a downgrade, as the yellow looks forced and awkward on the new uniforms, especially on the whites with the collar being squared off at the bottom. It truly looks like these are spotlighted in areas by Sharpie Highlighters.
- Northern Colorado
The Bears of the Big Sky Conference look to have a new slate grey uniform set. The jerseys feature a nice, large set of stripesthat match the white and blue versions. It also looks as though there is a new matte purple helmet with gold facemask and bear head logo.
- Sam Houston State
The Bearkats have updated their uniforms with one of the newer Under Armour designs. Rather than having stripes on the shoulders, the stripes are on the front, like a collarbone stripe. I liked the previous set just fine, but these are also a good look.
The Bearkats chose what turned out to be a popular Under Armour uniform design for the season. (image via Bearkats Athletics)- Samford
The Birmingham, Alabama, based Samford Bulldogs released a new branding set mid last season. The football team updated the helmets to match the new logos, but the turf field still featured the old logo. That has now been changed and the new logo looks amazing and powerful on the football field.
- Savannah State
After sticking with their Russell uniforms last year when the Russell-MEAC contract ran out, the Tigers are moving on to Nike this season. The new look is incredibly simple, with no stripes to be found, and only the team nickname written on the pants leg. It’s a big departure from what they previously wore.
- Stephen F. Austin
Much like their Southland Conference foes of Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin will be wearing new Under Armour uniforms. The jerseys feature collarbone stripes, which don’t pop as much in black, white and purple as Sam Houston’s orange, blue, and white. It will be interesting to see both teams wearing identical designs facing each again. SFA wore the same template as Sam Houston last year as well.
- Stony Brook
One of my favorite parts of doing this project is seeing the uniforms of the lower tiered teams. Because of that, I realized that Stony Brook might have one of my favorite designs. I love their Ohio State-esque look, with the silver helmets, red jerseys and white pants withthe nice striping patterns. This season, the Seawolves (an amazing nickname to boot!) will be adding a new white helmet to the arsenal. This new helmet is similar to the red one worn last year with the mascot logo on the sides of the helmet. But this one continues the great striping on to the shell. Pairing this with the white jerseys would make for one sharp looking uniform.
- Weber State
The Wildcats will be sporting a new helmet this season, with the logo on one side and player number on the other.
Division II Teams
- East Stroudsburg
The Warriors have revealed a new set of Under Armour uniforms. The new jerseys feature black and white Northwestern stripes on the shoulders. The jersey number and helmet logo are both rendered in Florida State’s Seminole font. They previously wore red helmets with the team nickname on the sides.
- Harding
The Arkansas-based Bison have a new grey alternate uniform with gold helmets. The helmets are currently logo-less, but I imagine they will add the bison logo like on their primary black helmets.
- Lake Erie College
This might be one of my favorite bits of the summer. A small school in Ohio that calls themselves the Storm has added an anthropomorphic tornado to the side of the new satin green helmets. I love the satin green finish on the shells, and the tornado logo is just too awesome to not love.
- Minnesota State
Sporting a new Nike template – the Vapor Pro, a combination of the Untouchable and Mach Speed – Minnesota State has two new jerseys – one purple, the other gold. Both are upgrades over the old dot-matrix stripe jerseys.
- North Alabama
UNA recently signed with adidas after wearing Russell uniforms for many years. The Lions recently revealed their new uniforms, with a brand new wrinkle. UNA has never worn a white helmet – until now. The white and purple jersey and pants have very common, catalog-chosen designs, but the look is a good one. UNA will be moving up from DII, where they have won three championships, to FCS after this season.
- Nebraska Kearney
The Lopers have a new turf field this season. The font is too Times New Roman for my liking, but I like the blue and gold stripes.
- Ohio Dominican
The Panthers of Ohio Dominican have previouslyworn Nike uniforms, but will be sporting Under Armour this season. The new uniforms are rather simple, being all black with small areas of yellow. The interesting part is the pants, and the front thigh stripe might feature something not seen before here – an outline of the panel.
- Slippery Rock
The Pennsylvania-based Slippery Rock football team has updated their adidas uniforms to the latest template. The biggest changes include the font and grey outline on the numbers and chestmark.
- Urbana
Another Ohio school I had previously never heard of is on this list. Urbana is switching from Nike to Under Armour, and the new white uniforms look spectacular. I love the striping on the shoulders and pants – they are very Ohio State like. It looks as though they will be recycling the blue Nike pants from the year before, and potentially the black jerseys. It can be tough for schools with smaller budget to afford to purchase new uniforms top to bottom, and multiple versions of each.
- Winston-Salem State
New logo set for the Rams. Good upgrade, as their old logo wasn’t too great.
Division III Teams
- Alfred
The Alfred Saxons will be wearing new white jerseys this year. After wearing UCLA striped home jerseys last year, the road jerseys will feature the shoulder striping.
- Luther College
The Iowa-based Luther College will become the first DIII program to have a blue turf field.
The new blue turf for Luther matches their blue running track (image via Luther Athletics)- Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB)
Yet another school choosing to go with the collarbone Under Armour stripes, the Crusaders have a nice purple jersey. I love the Crusader logo on the shoulders, too.
- Plattsburgh
The New York-based Cardinals (or Redbirds, apparently) have a new logo set. It’s a different perspective than one of their previous logos, and a somewhat more modern rendition of another.
NJCAA
- I usually don’t include the junior college ranks in these posts, but I feel this is warranted. The entire NJCAA league of teams has signed a league-wide deal with adidas. The three year deal will outfit roughly 3,400 teams across 25 sports.
As you can see, the current trend in design is leaning back to simple. The last few years have seen overly complicated, super busy uniforms across all levels. That pendulum is swinging the opposite way for now.
That’s all for this summer. There’s no question that we will see a fair share of reveals during the season.
Thanks to all the teams and equipment teams for sharing the images of their respective new uniforms. And for Uni-Watch and Sportslogos.net forums for helping showcase all the new details.

2016 NCAA Uniform Recap
/8 Comments/by Clint Richardson-
- The conference has released their new logo for the football championship game.
- Central Florida
- The Knights have updated their uniforms this off season, to a design that easily trumps the previous set. The team revealed four helmets, jerseys, and pants that equal out to 64 total different combinations. For each there is a white, gold, anthracite, and pewter choice, which is a bit over kill. Anthracite and pewter are close enough in color to not warrant having both available. The helmets feature a larger than normal UCF logo, which looks great, and a sword-tip stripe. The jerseys, on Nike’s Mach Speed template, will feature a custom number font reminiscent of Michigan State’s ever popular typeface, as well as the Pegasus from the school’s academic logo on the shoulder caps. I’m typically not a fan of mixing academic and athletic logos, but I think it works well here. Player names will also don the back of the jersey for the first time since 2004. There is rumor of a possible alternate helmet featuring the black knight logothat has been floating around.
- Cincinnati
- The Bearcats updated their end zone design. Sadly, it’s still turf. The more interesting news is that the entire athletic department has been working to have a red alternate jersey for many of their sports. The football program was obviously not left out. The team was surprised with a new red jersey that features black shoulder yokes and red shoulder caps. The design itself isn’t awful – shoulder yokes aren’t a great choice to begin with – but the Bearcat head logo on the sleeve is a really poor choice. The logo looks like it was meant more for a Kids’ Club than a uniform of any kind. Hopefully these will only be worn once. It’s a real shame after the uniform we saw last year, as loud as it was.
- East Carolina
- The Pirates have switched from Nike to adidas, and of course have new uniforms. At this point, we’ve only seen a white and purple set of jerseys, both of which feature adidas’ horrendous Shockweb template. It also appears that they have a new custom font. Both also have the pirate logo on the shoulder caps. The team has also shown off a new purple helmet with oversized pirate logos. It’s not all that different, but at least there’s two logos instead of the player number on one side.
- Houston
- Houston revealed new Nike Mach Speed uniforms this summer, which are big improvements over the previous set. Even though they’re pretty plain, it’s nice to see the Cougars wearing shoulder stripes again. Sadly, they dropped the ball a bit and failed to wear the best stripes they could.
- SMU
- SMU will be sporting new striped uniforms come this fall. The new blue and white stripes on the red tops look great, and are a fantastic addition to the pants. The previous set was pretty simple, so stripes are a big improvement. Hopefully they do a good job of matching their numerous helmets this season.
- South Florida
- USF has announced their uniform combination for game one, what they’re calling “SoFlo.” The uniforms aren’t new, but the helmet looks to be brand new.
Tulane has re-introduced their Angry Wave logo, and it is spectacular (image via Tulane Equipment) |
- Tulane
- After playing around with designs the last few years, Tulane has seemed to settle on one for now. After updating to Nike’s Mach Speed template with the newest jerseys, the Green Wave will be sporting green, blue, white, and grey uniforms. Each of the four jerseys feature a lovely set of shoulder stripes. The biggest attraction for Tulane is their new round table of helmets. There’s been many photos shown, but it’s difficult to know which are just prototypes and which will be worn. As long as we get a lot of Angry Wave, I’ll be perfectly content.
- Tulsa
- The Golden Hurricanes have switched from Nike to adidas, and well, not much changed. The biggest changes are, of course, the template – the hideous Shockweb 2.0 template – and placing the Tulsa script on the chest. The font seems to have been rounded out a bit more than the previous set.
Atlantic Coast Conference
- Boston College
- BC is one of those schools that hasn’t really figured out what they want to do with their look. They’ve tried to be classic, and crazy, and can’t seem to hit on anything. They’re trying something new this year, and I think it can work. Gone are the two-colored sleeve cuffs and stained-glass sublimated shoulders. Now the Eagles will be wearing striped shoulder caps and thigh stripes. The stripes include the stained-glass motif that BC has used over the last few years. I don’t think it’s a fantastic look, but it’s a big improvement over what they’re worn in the past.
- Clemson
- Clemson has updated to the Mach Speed template this summer, and slightly tweaked the design. The paw logo has moved from the sleeves to the top of the shoulders and TV numbers will now don the sleeves. These changes were done to better represent teams of the past, specifically their 1981 National Championship team. Details on every change can be seen at Clemson’s fantastic breakdown.
- North Carolina
- No changes to the uniforms have been announced, but the Tar Heels will be playing Georgia in Atlanta to start the season. Both teams will be wearing their colored tops, so it’ll be a wonderful looking game.
- North Carolina State
- This season will mark 50 years for NC State’s football stadium, so the team will be wearing throwback uniforms for their October 8th matchup against Notre Dame. The most obvious aspect of these is the helmet logo, the “diamond” logo that donned NC State’s helmets from 1986 to 1999.

- Pittsburgh
- It’s been a long time coming, but Pitt has finally returned to their script logo. The school held a big announcement party in April to announce the change. In May, the football program revealed their new uniforms. This new set was announced with mixed emotions. It was nice to see stripes added back to the uniforms. But not many people are fans of the number font. To have a square/boxy outer exterior and be rounded on the inside, it was an odd font and pretty off-putting. Turns out it’s based off a building on campus, but that’s just another example of Nike failing to push story on a uniform. August saw the team reveal their throwback uniforms that will be worn a few times this year. These constitute the color scheme of the 1980s. Again, mixed feelings were all over the internet. Many people enjoy the yellow and bluecolors, but some preferred the darker gold to the bright yellow. The lack of shoulder stripes was disappointing, but Pitt’s uniforms went through many changes of their own during the 1970s and 1980s. Overall, it’s an improvement. The script is truly exceptional – that change was long overdue. The biggest change I would make to the uniforms is fixing the number font. If that’s done, these would be a wonderful design.
- Virginia
- This year will be Bronco Mendenhall’s first year as Virginia head coach. Mendenhall stated he wished to take the program back to a more traditional uniform look this season. The jerseys are simply recycled from previous years, with the blue tops being the old throwback jerseys. The helmets are the biggest change. They’re using the blue and orange shells from previous season, and adding a new white helmet. Each helmet has a really nice stripe over the top that does this uniform set wonders. The downside is the V-sword logo is only on one side, while the player number is on the other. It does go to show that even small changes can have a massive effect. Another cool change is that the football field will have diamond-painted end zones, a throwback to a classic era of the sport.
- Virginia Tech
- Lots of news for the Hokies. First off, the entire athletic department went through a bit of a redesigning, with every sport now using a common typeface, wordmark, and number font. The football team updated to a new template – the same template that LSU used a few years ago. The new number font doesn’t look great, to me, on the football uniforms, but I seem to be in the minority online. With VT starting the season against Tennessee at Bristol, the Hokies revealed a new uniform for the big game. And it’s pretty awful. Remember those “Hokie Stone” helmets they wore a few years ago? They’ve taken that design idea and placed it everywhere. The stone design covers the entire jersey and the pant stripe, with the pants being a dark grey or black elsewhere. The helmet also features the stone pattern, but this time only within the VT logo and stripes. I personally think it might have looked better if they paired the original stone helmet with this look.
Michigan’s new white Jordan Brand uniforms (image via Michigan Athletics) |
- Michigan
- What was the most anticipated unveil of the summer, Michigan’s new Jordan Brand football uniforms were nothing drastic. The uniforms will be on Nike’s Mach Speed template, but just showcasing the Jordan Brand Jumpman logo, a first for any football program. There are a few changes, though, but nothing too much. The biggest change is the number font. The font choice is actually a throwback itself to the 1934 team when a man named Gerald Ford sporting the maize and blue for Michigan. Speaking of maize, that name used for the yellow color used has changed. It’s now being called “Amarillo” but Nike. If we want to get technical, the old color was Pantone 116 C, and the new Nike color is Pantone 7406 C. The helmet has also received a tiny change – it’ll now be a satin finish. When the news came out early August, there was a ton of debate and confusion over the difference between matte and satin, but the Michigan equipment manager twitter account did confirm it to be satin. Probably the biggest change is that the Wolverines would be sticking with the white pants on the road. Coach Jim Harbaugh brought these back last year, but rotated the classic yellow pants in. I hope they do the same at some point this year. I like the white pants as much as anyone, but the white jerseys and yellow pants was just typical Michigan to me.
- Nebraska
- Sad news for Nebraska, with the passing of punter Sam Foltz and former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler. Both men died in a car wreck in July. To honor Foltz, Nebraska will be wearing memorial “SF27” decals on the back of their helmets. The team also revealed new alternate “Husker Chrome” uniforms to be worn against Northwestern on September 24. These actually look good, to me. I can do with the chrome striping at this point, but I love that matte white helmet. Maybe adidas just set the bar so lowin the past that anything decent is now good?
- Northwestern
- A few years ago, Northwestern debuted their new uniforms featuring Northwestern Stripes (yes, that’s what they’re called) across the chest. This year, they’ve since updated those uniforms to Under Armour’s new template. Design changes include matching the collar to the body of the uniform (rather than contrasting like last year), and having the Northwestern stripes placed on the sleeve cuffs and thigh strap on the pants.
- Ohio State
- Ohio State and Nike signed a $252 million extension in January shortly after the college football season ended. Besides that, the team will wear 1916 throwbacks against Nebraska on November 5th.
- Purdue
- The Boilermakers are another program I think has a great logo and great potential, but just fails to use it well on the gridiron. After years of sporting extremely plain uniforms, Purdue has upgraded this summer. Now using the Mach Speed template from Nike, the Black and Gold has taken the train from their logo and used the “cow catcher” as a motif across the board. The shoulders now feature sublimated grill lines to represent the front end of an old locomotive engine. The team will have black, white, and anthracite jerseys and pants available to wear. Unfortunately, the anthracite jersey has a black shoulder yoke on it. There’s also three helmets available. The traditional gold lid, and black helmet with train track striping (which again, has potential but doesn’t execute very well), and a white helmet featuring their amazing train logo, sadly only on one side. This will be the best Purdue has looked in a while, but it still feels empty with the how much better they could’ve been.
- Rutgers
- When Chris Ash took over as the new football coach, he was told by many fans that something had to be done with the uniforms. Ash stated that he wanted to return to “a traditional Rutgers look” with the new uniforms. Nike unveiled a new logo and new uniforms for each of Rutgers’ teams at the school’s annual “R Awards.” The football uniforms will each use Nike’s Mach Speed template and feature shoulder stripes and sublimated chainmail detailing on the shoulder caps. The helmet is back to the older design prior to the most recent redesign – plain one-colored shell with the simple block R logo. The helmets also feature a “#BELIEVE” decal on the back, to honor former player Eric LeGrand, who was paralyzed after a brutal hit in a 2010 game. The pants are rather plain, simply featuring two stripes in the mesh side panels. Simple or not, it’s nice to see *something* on the pants after most of Nike’s uniforms didn’t have anything on the pants this summer. The team also revealed an all-black alternate uniform in August, one that is simply a recoloring of the other designs. The helmet is the most intriguing part, with the shell being matte black and the new knight logo donning the sides. It looks like it’ll be a good uniform, but we’ll have to see how it looks on the field.
- Wisconsin
- The Badgers left adidas this summer for a new deal with Under Armour. July saw the reveal of the new Wisconsin uniforms (alongside new Notre Dame and Yale uniforms) at the Under Armour 20th birthday party in Baltimore. The new uniforms are nearly identical to the previous design. The biggest changes come with the new number font that better resembles the motion-W logo, and the stripes all across the uniform. The stripes feature arrows that “reflect the idea of being ‘Forever Forward’ (the team’s new motto) inspired by our state motto: Forward.”
- Iowa State
- Iowa State revealed a new alternate helmet this June. The new white helmetsfeature chrome decals and a tapered stripe. These helmets look spectacular, and will look amazing with the all white road uniforms. They’re set to be worn “a couple of times” this season, and I can’t wait to see them.
Oklahoma State’s new orange uniforms (image via Oklahoma State Athletics) |
- Oklahoma State
- Oklahoma State was one of the early teams to hop on the new uniform train a few years ago. I, for one, always liked the old design, with the “barbed wire” stripe – it was simple and unique and I loved it. These new Mach Speed uniforms are pretty loud, in my opinion, but a fairly clean look overall. The first detail you’ll notice is the collar and sleeve details. The design is a custom-made collection of Oklahoma State details, including Barry Sanders’ famous #21, as a cowboy bandana. The thought behind this design is decent, but I’m not the biggest fan of it. The uniforms also feature a new custom font. The pants are extremely simple, just having “COWBOYS” in white or silver. My least favorite part of the design is the new sheriff’s badge on the chest. It’s a great looking design, but I adored this when team captains would wear one for the bowl game. The team showed off countless helmets in the promo photos, so fully expect the Cowboys to continue mix and matching lids this season.
- West Virginia
- This year will mark the 125thanniversary of West Virginia football, so the team will sport a special decal on the helmets this year. The Mountaineers were also spotted wearing merit decals in practice, but no word yet if those will translate over to the game helmets. The new 125thanniversary logo will be worn on the helmet for the opening game, and it works wonderfully.
Conference USA
- Marshall
- Marshall broke out new green jerseys last season. This year, they’ve added the M logo to the shoulder caps, and new green pants with matching black stripe. I still feel like these are a downgrade to the previous design, but whatchya gonna do. I still miss the peapods though.
- Old Dominion
- Old Dominion has new white helmets this year, possibly replacing the previous Navy clones. These new lids will feature a unique helmet stripe and what seems to be chrome decals on the sides. The Monarchs also released a new all-black uniform, with a nice matte black helmet.
The Hilltoppers have a new set of uniforms (image via Western Kentucky Athletics) |
- Western Kentucky
- After a few seasons with a fairly unique uniform set, the Hilltoppers unveiled a new set this summer. Sticking with Russell Athletics’ latest template, these new uniforms feature a distinctive stripe on the shoulders that end at a point towards the chest. Much like the last set, the numbers will feature the school’s seal. The helmet stripes and base layer shirts will feature sublimated houndstooth patterns, which is to honor legendary head coach Jimmy Feix, who passed away in 2014.
- Louisiana Tech
- Another school switching uniform suppliers, LaTech has left Nike to join adidas. The new football uniforms are not much different than the previous set. The biggest change throughout the uniforms is simply the matching of the stripes. The team has changed from Northwestern stripes, just dumping the middle white stripes and making everything more compact. The number font seems to be a bit smaller, and the team nickname has been added to the chest. Minor changes overall.
- Akron
- Smaller schools have a difficult time funding changing their uniforms every now and then, let alone every season like many Power 5 schools. That holds true with Akron, who has slowly changed their look in previous season. This year, they’ve changed from a very outdated adidas look to a new Shockweb 2.0 blue uniform. No word yet if the whites were also changed. The Zips also have a new white helmet with gold Z logo and facemask, and boy I hope we don’t see this one often.
- Ball State
- The Ball State Cardinals have unveiled a few new helmet designs. The first is the Red,White & Blue design, featuring an American Flag motif in the cardinal logo and stripes. The other, a matte black helmet, comes with a new black alternate uniform. Also, for the fist time since 1970, the Cardinals will red helmets available in the rotation.
- Bowling Green
- Bowling Green revealed a whole slew of new uniforms last season. This year, they’ve unveiled a new Military Appreciation helmet. The BG in the logo feature the stars and stripes while the eagle head has digi-camo theme. The cool feature of this design is in the stripe, where the team has placed the names of Bowling Green State University students that have passed in the line of duty, all 111 of them. Apparently there will be 12 different helmet stripes spread out across the entire team to accomplish supporting each family. As much as I dislike teams wearing military appreciation uniforms (and other noble “causes” out there), I really like the idea behind this helmet. If BG finds that the different logo decals are necessary to help accomplish the goal of this, then fine. The stripe alone does a fantastic job of honoring previous students.
The Buffalo Bulls have new blue, white, and black uniforms this year. (image via Buffalo Athletics) |
- Buffalo
The State University of New York – BuffaloUniversity of Buffalo has finally dumped their awful uniforms for a very simple set. After having that hideous chest patch, anything is an upgrade. The new Mach Speed uniforms come in white, blue, and black. The Bulls showed off three helmets with the promos. Sadly, it looks as though they’ll be focusing on black and white shells and decals. It would be nice to see their nice shade of blue pushed a bit more. Overall the design is bland as ever, but it’s a massive upgrade, which doesn’t say much. They’ll also be playing on a new turf field.
- Eastern Michigan
- After a few years of wearing uniforms with ClipArt wings, Eastern Michigan will be wearing a much better design this year. The team revealed a new green jersey on adidas’ Shockweb 2.0 template that featured some nice silver shoulder stripes and diamond plate numbers. The helmet also matches with the striping and diamond plate on the E logo decal. It’s loud, but that’s adidas, but I think it’s a good lookfor them.
- Kent State
- Kent State will now be wearing Under Armour uniforms. The new uniforms, on the new template, are rather simple, simply having a contrasting colored set of shoulder caps and the now-typical thigh stripes. The interesting part is that the left leg stripe has the school’s name written across, which I believe is the first time this has happened with this new template.
- Miami OH
- After wearing one of the more unique designs in recent years, Miami has shelved the “bowling ball” uniforms for a much simpler design. The new design is rather Mississippi State-like with the single shoulder yoke stripe. The more interesting aspect is the two helmets shown off, with the white helmet – the better of the two – having a small red stripe towards the bottom, almost reminiscent of the Navy helmets. The red helmet fades to white towards the bottom.
- Ohio
- No design changes for Ohio, but they have updated to the new Russell template. Looks like the Bobcats will be wearing some really poorly striped pants as well this year.
- Toledo
- Per the internet, I’m in the minority for really liking Toledo’s uniform design. This year, they’ve added a new blue-fade-to-yellow helmet, which I’m not a fan of. They also have a new turf design.
- Western Michigan
- Western Michigan’s head coach has been pushing “row the boat” as the team montra for the last few years now. They’ve worn some crazy uniforms resembling the phrase, but they have yet another set of uniforms. The design is pretty bad, all black with oars lining the numbers and sides of the jerseys and pants. The cool part is that head coach P.J. Fleck modeled the uniforms at practice, and even took part in some drills! The university also announced a brand refresh, taking the chance to clean up their logos and wordmarks.
Mountain West Conference
Air Force has one of the coolest helmets this season (image via Air Force Athletics) |
- Air Force
- Some of the best alternate uniforms come from the military academies. One of the typical favorites is the Air Force Thunderbird uniforms worn in 2010. Those may now be #2 for many people after the Air Force Academy revealed new Sharktooth uniforms, which feature amazing helmets that match the bombers. The all grey look is a divergent from the typical blue and grey, but it’s easy to give the academies a free pass. Plus these just look freaking awesome.
- Colorado State
- In a bit of a surprise, the Colorado State Rams revealed new uniforms. The team last received new uniforms for the 2014 season. These new uniforms are set on Under Armour’s newest template, and aren’t a massive change from the last. The biggest change is the removal of the contrasting colored shoulder caps for the ram horn logo. The shoulder logo is a bit odd, and looks a little ClipArt-ish, but it would look much better if it matched the helmet horns a little better. The pants no longer feature a solid stripe, but rather have “RAMS” written across the left thigh, where Under Armour has loved to place stripes in the last few years.
- Fresno State
- Nothing yet
- Hawai`i
- The Rainbow Warriors wore new green uniforms last year, and this year they’ve added a new white set. The uniforms are simply a recolored version of last year’s home design, and I personally think they look wonderful. Hopefully we’ll get to see the rainbow throwbacks once again this season.
- Nevada
- The Wolfpack has been doing their best to keep up with the changing uniform trend. Sadly, budget constraints has hurt their chances to do so. This season, the team has gone back to a matte blue helmet with silver facemask, and two different logos – the wolf logo on the left, the script Pack on the right.
- UNLV
- I love the new matte grey helmet with mascot logo that UNLV will be wearing this year. It has so much character and I can’t wait to see it hit the field.
- Wyoming
- One of the worst looking teams over the last many years, Wyoming has FINALLY updated from their hideous FlyWire shoulder uniforms. The Cowboys have upgrade to the Mach Speed template this year (they basically skipped five or six templates with this change) and they look so much better. They did a wonderful job matching elements from the typeface to the numbers and bringing out the “Old Western” look into this design. It would’ve been nice to see matching stripes on the pants, however.
Pac 12
- California
- Cal has signed a deal with Under Armour worth $86 million in April. The contract won’t take over until the 2017-18 season, so they’ll still be with Nike for the upcoming season.
- Oregon
- Oregon decided to try out the new Vicis ZERO1 helmet, a reimagined helmet that helps better protect from concussions, for the entire season, but they’ve since shelved them after complaints from players. Uniform wise, an all-black uniform was used for some promo photos showcasing Nike’s newest template, the Vapor Untouchable. Shockingly, there’s reportedly even more in the works for the Ducks, something that will even “break the internet.” There was a new jersey with new shoulder wings posted on a retail site, and many think this will be the new base design.
- Oregon State
- The Beavers have worn one of my favorite helmets for the last few years. Now photos have surfacedthat look as though they have changed out the fantastic striped facemask for a plain black one. I’m hoping they’re just placeholders, as I would be very sad if they did make this change.
USC will be wearing their new white jerseys week one against Alabama (image via USC Athletics) |
- Southern Cal
- USC has ultimately worn the same uniforms since 2002, only making small changes like updating templates. This season will see USC’s biggest design change since 2001. The new Mach Speed uniforms will feature a Trojan-style pattern around the collar and sleeve cuffs. The white jersey will feature crimson trims for the first time with this design. They’re minor changes throughout, but it’s a good look. The white jersey looks to be in need of a bit more yellow, but that’s a terribly minor gripe.
- UCLA
- UCLA signed with Under Armour in May, to the tune of 15 years and $280 million. The record deal won’t take place until next July. Because of that, the football team has moved away from adidas’ ugly templates, settling for a very simple template. Thankfully, the shoulder stripes are in a much better application, actually looking more than a simple stamp like on previous templates. The number font has also changed, and sadly it still isn’t Clarendon. These still aren’t perfect, but it’s nice to see no more tiretreads.
- Utah
- No change to the uniforms, but the Utes have tweaked their helmets a bit. They split the red center stripe to create what they’re calling a “Utah Stripe.”
- Washington
- Much like Oregon, Washington players were planning to test out the new Vicis ZERO1 helmet, but they scrapped that after similar complaints from the players.
Southeastern Conference
- Arkansas
- Really cool change from Arkansas, where graduated student-athletes will now wear special SEC patches detailing their accomplishment.
- Auburn
- No design changes, but it appears Auburn will be the latest team to join in on the treDCALS 3D logo thigh pads this season.
- Georgia
- With a new head coach, there’s been rumors of returning to the black jerseys. The black jerseys debuted against Auburn in 2007, and haven’t been worn since 2008. A new set of black jerseys, with red collars and sleeve cuffs, is apparently going to be worn at some point this season.
Kentucky players model their new Nike uniforms (image via Kentucky.com) |
- Kentucky
- Kentucky updated their UK logo last season, but it took a while for it to be pushed out everywhere in the athletic department. This season, the football program has rolled out new Nike Mach Speed uniforms. The biggest change is that the checkerboard shoulder caps are much more defined now, which is sadly a downgrade for me. I thought the sublimated look was a much nicer look. The pants also have lost their double stripes, now featuring a colored mesh panel, which looks awfully cheap. Oddly enough, I think the new anthracite jersey looks better than the previous grey and black sets as the checkerboards actually blend better, rather than just being copy and pasted from the other sets. The helmets also look to have lost the single stripe, which seems as a downgrade right now. In addition to the new uniforms, Nike also revealed a new wildcat head logo, which can be seen on the pants’ hip. No official word if this will be worn on the helmets anytime soon, but rumors began to swirl shortly after the reveal. Overall, I think these uniforms would’ve looked a lot better if they didn’t proceed a pretty good design. They’re a solid look, but I still prefer the previous uniforms.
- Missouri
- Nothing concrete yet, but a recruit tweeted out a photo of a brand new matte gold (it’s yellow though) helmet. Match the helmet to the right gold and it might work out.
- South Carolina
- Last year, the Gamecocks decided to jump on the alternate uniform train, and broke out a few new helmets, including their throwback red lids. This year, the team will have three different helmets available – the usual white, throwback red, and new black. The team also has a new set of uniforms on Under Armour’s new template. The new template fits the shoulder stripes so much better this time around. Team seniors will reportedly vote on each week’s uniform combinations.
- Tennessee
- To honor legendary Tennessee basketball coach Pat Summitt, who passed away earlier this season, the football team will wear special decals on the back of their helmets.
- Appalachian State
- App State has a new set of jerseys, updating their looks to the new Mach Speed template. The white jersey was designed to match the black tops, simply copying the shoulder caps, which is an improvement over the last design. The white helmet looks to be new, as well.
- Georgia State
- According to one of Georgia State’s assistant coaches, the Panthers will have two new helmets available for this season. The matte blue helmet shown is particularly bad. That shade of blue just doesn’t work well in that finish. The chrome helmet is in the same color and features the same panther head logo, but looks a lot better.
Idaho will wear new matte grey helmets and matching uniforms this year (image via Idaho Athletics) |
- Idaho
- Idaho has been stuck in time with their uniforms, struggling to fund new uniforms each year. After a generous donation last season, the Vandals will be sporting new silver alternates this year. The new uniforms will be on the Nike Mach Speed template and be completely silver. The helmets will be a matching silver with silver facemasks. According to the article on Idaho’s athletic site, the helmets with have “Vandals” on the side at home, and “Idaho” on the road. (The article wasn’t exceptionally written, so it’s possible the new silver helmets will only be worn on the road. It was difficult to tell by the article.)
- Louisiana-Lafayette
- ULL hands-down had the greatest April Fools’ “prank” this year, when head coach Mark Hudspeth tweeted an image of a new helmet featuring lobster decals. Unfortunately is was proven to be a joke, but the internet fell in love with the design so there’s a (small) possibility of it becoming reality one day. Besides that, the team does have some new uniforms. A few years ago, the team wore fleur de lis on the shoulders, then replaced them with TV numbers. Now, the TV numbers have moved to the top of the shoulders and stripes now don the shoulders. They’ll also be sporting new helmets, both of which feature double striping and Ragin’ Cajuns on the side. It was mentioned online that they look an awful lot like Wisconsin from a few years ago. That’s not a bad thing, but I do wish they would use the fleur de lis a lot more.
- New Mexico State
- Another team leaving their previous uniform maker, New Mexico State has changed from adidas to Under Armour. Thus far, we’ve only see an image of their new colored tops, which is already a big improvement. The new tops are on Under Armour’s new template, and feature black and white shoulder caps. I feel like this is one of the first times we’ve seen Under Armour provide uniforms with multiple colors in the shoulder cap area, and it’s a decent look. Hopefully the rest of the uniforms look good when they hit the field this season. The Aggies also quietly tweaked their logo this summer.
- Troy
- According to the team’s equipment Twitter account, Troy will have new matte red and white helmets available. The Trojans will be sporting their chrome lids for the season opener.
Division I FBS Independents
Notre Dame will wear their new “Shamrock Series” uniforms in Texas against Army. (image via Notre Dame Athletics) |
- Notre Dame
- One of the smaller changes of the summer, Notre Dame slightly tweaked their logo. The outline was extremely large on the older version, and it’s been toned down a good bit. The football jerseys also experienced a minor tweak, as the player numbers were slimmed down a little. The big news come from the Under Armour birthday bash, where a new Shamrock Series uniform was unveiled. Since the Irish are playing Army for this year’s edition of the game, Notre Dame decided to “honor the military” by wearing dark green, reminiscent of some military uniforms. The connection with the school comes with from a special memorial on one of the school’s campus buildings. The entrance way features an amazing engraving with “God, Country, Notre Dame in Glory Everlasting” above the door. The memorial is meant as a way to honor the Notre Dame men that passed in World War I. The artwork is placed on the uniforms on the side of the hand painted helmets and on the shoulder caps. The unique Gothic-style font from the engraving translate over to the wordmark on the chest and the player numbers. I love using aspects of campus on a uniform like this – Northwestern did it perfectly a few years ago. But the drab green and gold really hurt this uniform for ND. I feel like this uniform has great potential, but the coloring does it zero favors in my book.
- Montana
- The Griz have new chrome red helmets that feature an obnoxious claw scratch decal on the top
North Dakora has a new nickname, logo, and matte green helmets (image via North Dakota Athletics) |
- North Dakota
- Previously the Fighting Sioux, North Dakota has finally rebranded themselves as the Fighting Hawks. The NCAA forced North Dakota to abandon their previous moniker back in 2012 due to the possible insensitivity to American Natives. The team revealed new matte green helmets to reflect the new logo, sadly only placing it on one side. They’ll also be wearing new grey uniforms this season.
- Portland State
- The Vikings went through a school-wide redesign, revealing a new PS shield and Viking head logo. The new Mach Speed uniforms are pretty simple, but an improvement over the previous look. The PS shield looks a bit odd on the helmets, and I would love to see the Viking make an appearance.
Big Sky Conference
- Charleston Southern
- The Navy alternate helmet from 2012 has been a very popular choice for numerous schools. The Buccaneers will be the latest to jump on the ship. The coloring isn’t bad, but the execution is. What is supposed to be a gold chrome stripe looks more like masking tape. We can only hope, if this helmets sees playing time, that they do the stripe justice.
- Monmouth (NJ)
- The Monmouth Hawks will be sporting new white, purple, and grey uniformsthis season. Yea, they’re plain, but anything is better than piping.
- Presbyterian
- The Blue Hose have new “Tartan Up” helmets that feature a shortened version of the school name, and a unique plaid patterned stripe.
Colonial Athletic Association
- Stony Brook
- The Seawolves will be sporting new red Nike Mach Speed uniforms. The addition of the blue stripe looks better than the grey stripes.
Ivy League
- Brown
-
- The 4-time Ivy League champions will have a new alternate uniform this season. The black Nike uniforms feature brown shoulder caps with brown and white collarbone stripes. These feel like a big downgrade, especially with what their normal uniforms will look like.
Cornell’s new white Nike uniforms and matte red helmets (image via Cornell Football Equipment) |
- Cornell
- Cornell has a new white Mach Speed uniform, which looks pretty good. My favorite part of this set is that gorgeous matte red helmet. They’ll also be playing on new turf this season.
- Princeton
- The Princeton Tigers will be wearing new Nike uniforms this season. The black and white uniforms are very similar to the historic look they’ve always worn. But the big news comes with the new all orange uniforms.
- Yale
- After years of wearing Nike, Yale became the first Ivy League program to sign with Under Armour. The biggest design changes for the Bulldogs is a two-toned collar and normal pants striping.
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
-
- Big news for the MEAC Conference, where the majority of the schools associated have signed individual apparel deals, ten of which signed with Nike, after the conference-wide deal with Russell Athletic expired last season.
Delaware State has new Nike uniforms this year (image via Delaware State Athletics) |
- Delaware State
- The Hornets moved away from Russell to Nike, and they’ll be sporting new collarbone striped uniforms. The design is pretty similar to the previous set, albeit the gradient numbers are pretty bad.
- Florida A&M
- After years of wearing notoriously bad uniforms, the Rattlers have changed from Russell to Nike, and of course have new uniforms. The two sets revealed are extremely plain, with just the player numbers on the jerseys, and “STRIKE” on the pant legs. I’m pretty sure the white numbers on the white jerseys aren’t legal according the NCAA’s new uniform rules.
- Hampton
- The Pirates were one of the few teams to sign with Under Armour. Their new uniformsaren’t a big change from their old set. The new striping pattern looks really good.
- Howard
- After years of poaching the Buffalo Bills’ logo, Howard finally has their own set of logos. And they look good! The Bison signed with Under Armour, and their uniforms are extremely plain, a big change from the Russell uniforms.
- Morgan State
- New orange adidas Shockweb 2.0 uniforms were shown off at MEAC Media Days. Their old uniforms were a doozy.
- Norfolk St
- New Nike uniforms that are a blend between the Miami Hurricane collarbone stripes and Arizona gradient stripe were shown off a Media Days. They last wore Russell’s standard uniforms. The program also showed off what appears to be a new chrome helmet before switching from Russell.
Missouri Valley Football Conference
- South Dakota
- The Coyotes will be wearing new “ghost” matte white helmets with chrome decals this season.
- Southern Illinois
- The Salukis will be wearing new matte red helmets this season. They had previously worn matte black lids.
- Western Illinois
- The Leathernecks’ have new adidas Shockweb 2.0 uniforms this season.
Northeast Conference
- Sacred Heart
- The Connecticut-based Pioneers will have new chrome/metallic helmet decals for the season.
Ohio Valley Conference
- Austin Peay
- The Governors will be wearing white helmets for the first time in their program’s history. They normally wear red lids.
- Murray State
- The Racers have a nice new uniform set this year. Last year, Murray State revealed a new set of logos, and this new set reflects that. The helmet features a tapering stripe with the blue and yellow checkerboard. The new M-Racer logo will be on the left side, while the player number will sadly be on the right. The uniforms are rather plain, with the blues having a white shoulder cap and the white tops being completely white.
- Tennessee Tech
- Another Russell Athletic casualty, the Golden Eagles have signed with adidas. The new uniforms will resemble the striped design LSU has donned for decades. Thankfully we will never have to see these again.
UT-Martin will look a little less like Auburn this season (image via UT-Martin Athletics) |
- Tennessee-Martin
- Everyone’s favorite Auburn clone, UT-Martin has changed over to Under Armour from Russell. The biggest change for their uniforms is the basic jersey tops, now without any striping whatsoever. The pants striping now matches the helmet, something that many people would like to see Auburn change to.
Patriot League
- Colgate
- New mattered and grey helmets for the Raiders.
- Fordham
- Fordham revealed some nice new uniformsto the team. They’re a good upgrade from the previous look.
Georgetown will have two new helmets for this season (image via Georgetown Athletics) |
- Georgetown
- One of my favorite designs of the summer, Georgetown revealed new white Mach Speed uniforms. The jerseys, much like their blue set from last year, feature their infamous Kent Cloth pattern on the shoulder caps. The best part comes with the helmets, where the Bulldogs tweaked their grey lids to have some more detail, and they added an amazing matte blue helmet with the alternate bulldog logo.
Pioneer Football League
- Jacksonville (FL)
- The Dolphins have a new set of green tops, gold pants, and white helmets.
Southern Conference
- The Citadel
- Minor tweak for the Citadel, as the white jerseys now have the block C logorather the full school name.
- VMI
- VMI has new Under Armour uniforms, and they look great. Both the white and red sets have gold shoulder caps with sleeve cuff stripes and a tapering stripe over the shoulder. The previous set was very plain, so these are a great upgrade.
Southland Conference
- Abilene Christian
- Previously with adidas, the Wildcats have changed to Nike and revealed new uniforms this summer. The purple tops are the new catalog template resembling Nike’s newest Vapor Untouchable template, complete with the collarbone stripes. The whites, my personal favorite of the set, is on the Mach Speed template and includes purple shoulder caps with the ACU logo.
- Incarnate Word
- The Cardinals will be wearing new matte red helmets with logo on one side, player number on the other.
- Sam Houston State
- Sam Houston will be sporting new white uniforms this season, complete with brand new blue and orange pants. The orange tops were worn last year.
- SE Louisiana
- The Lions have debuted a nice new white helmet. They previously wore yellow helmets.
Southwestern Athletic Conference
- Prairie View A&M
- Prairie View has a “new” logo, in which they simply adjusted the coloring in the letters. The football team also has new Russell uniforms, a slight tweak from last year.
Division I FCS Independent
- Coastal Carolina
- In their first year in FCS, Coastal Carolina has changed from Russell over to Under Armour. The new uniforms are on the new template, and feature contrasting colored shoulder caps with an interesting dotted-line stripe. The same stripe is placed on the thigh straps. It’s a good, clean look for Coastal, much better than the previous Russell uniforms.
- Wichita State
- The Shockers last fielded a football in 1986. There’s been growing interest in bringing the team back in the short future. The school’s president shared a photo of a prototype helmet when the news began to circulate. The matte black helmet looks pretty interesting with the unique swooshes around the logo.
Division II
- Assumption College
- The Massachusetts based Greyhounds will be sporting new Nike Mach Speed uniforms, a really nice look and massive improvement over the previous uniforms. Stripes make all the difference!
- Charleston
- After breaking out new red uniforms last season, the Golden Eagles have revealed a new white jersey.
- Colorado Mesa
- The Mavericks have received new white uniforms from Under Armour, featuring some interesting red, white, and gold stripes on the jerseys and pants.
I love Blaster the Burro, especially on this new helmet. (image via Colorado School of Mines Athletics) |
- Colorado School of Mines
- The Orediggers have new matte black helmets this season, with one of my favorite mascot logos, Blaster, in chrome on the sides.
- Kentucky Wesleyan
- The Panthers have released a new set of logos for the future. The new logos, designed by KWC alums, will be soft-launched, and look amazing. They’ll no longer have to copy the old Jacksonville Jaguars logo.
- Malone
- The Canton, Ohio, Malone University Pioneers will be wearing new helmets that resemble the ever-popular Navy helmet. They’ll also be wearing new adidas uniforms, which are a very different approach from the old UnderArmour design they previously wore.
- Saint Anslem
- The Hawks from New Hampshire have a new white helmet with oversized logos on the sides and the UCONN-style front stripewith the hawk logo and some motivational words. The Hawks are no stranger to odd-concept helmets.
Division III
- Alfred State
- The Pioneers’ Twitter account tweeted out in March two prototype helmets they were testing out. No word yet on which they chose.
- East Texas Baptist
- The Tigers have revealed new black uniforms, with a rather unique helmet logo. Both are a pretty big divergence from the previous set.
- Mount Union
- The defending DIII champions will be wearing new matte black helmets with chrome decals at some point during the season.
- Trinity College (CT)
- The Bantams have a new gold jersey for this season
- Trinity University (TX)
- The Tigers have revealed a new matte red helmet that features the same logo from their other helmets.
That does it for this season’s uniform changes. There’s no doubt going to be plenty more uniforms throughout the year. Stick with the Auburn Uniform Database for everything Auburn uniforms, and follow me on Twitter for even more uniform news!
Uniform War 2015: Who Won the Off Season?
/0 Comments/by Clint RichardsonOverall Quality of Designs:
- Nike: The Swoosh has always had a tendency to template many of their teams to the same look. Thankfully they’ve moved away from that in recent years. As a whole, this may have been one of Nike’s better seasons in regards to providing good uniform designs. One of my favorite redesigns of the entire summer is certainly North Carolina. When you showcase things that are unique to a certain school, and do it well, you’ll be doing just fine. UNC’s new uniforms feature their infamous argyle pattern in one of the best ways possible. When Tennessee revealed their new Nike uniforms, it was a big sigh of relief that Nike didn’t pull their typical tricks and mess up a great historical uniform design. The implantation of the checkerboard to the uniforms was well done, and the Smokey Grey uniforms look better than the year before (except the anthracite shoulder yokes). The grey alternate helmet is the type of innovative design Nike has gotten much better at providing in recent years.
- Under Armour: Ever since the original Maryland Pride uniform game, people have associated Under Armour with being the second coming of Nike and Oregon. Yes, while Under Armour has rolled out some different designs, people fail to see the great uniforms they continue to push out. This season, Under Armour updated many of their teams to their newest “ungrabbable” template, which showcases the uniform features so much better than the previous set. The biggest design of the season for the guys out of Baltimore would be Cincinnati. After leaving Adidas and signing with Under Armour not long after the spring sports season ended, UA made some great changes to the overall brand, and even added a pretty interesting stripe used to represent many characteristics of the campus. Many of these elements subsequently created by designers seem to be very forced with poor backstories, but this one works pretty well. The uniforms showcase the stripes in three different locations, each in a different orientation. The biggest drawback from Under Armour’s newest template is the front of the leg stripe, and the fact that they continue to use it as a stripe placement. Where a design like Cincinnati’s would have been too busy on a traditional stripe location, one like the throwbacks Utah revealed are a bit odd, as those aren’t how the pant stripes were worn in the days they are attempting to honor with the throwback. The area could be used well in certain applications, but overall, it’s a bit too much at this time.
- Adidas: If you’ve read anything I’ve written about Adidas, whether here on the AUD or on my Twitter, you know I’m no fan of what they do with their uniform design program. When you look at a uniform by the Adidas team, you know exactly who made it, even without seeing the logo, which I guess is what they’re going for. But when you continue to put out designs that look awful, don’t represent the school in the slightest, and just seem to be completely tone-deaf to the reactions of the uniforms, especially those that spend their time critiquing and designing uniforms themselves, your reputation as a uniform design company certainly takes a hit. The template that Adidas continues to use and innovate keeps hindering the overall designs. The “tiretreads” visible throughout the uniform (they’ve actually extended down the chest and to the pants with the Shockweb 2.0 template) are very tacky looking and can all but ruin an otherwise good design. This season, Adidas has added slashes to the numbers and through many of the stripes that don the shoulders. These aren’t new elements by no means, but they’ve become more prominent over the years. These additions seem to serve no purpose whatsoever, to performance or design, and seem to be added just because they can. Miami was one of the better designs of the summer, but features many of the unneeded elements, and ultimately hindered the overall design. Arizona State, on the other hand, just has the tiretreads, and seems to be more bearable than many other uniforms.
Presentation:
- Nike: Nike has always tried to keep their presentations as uniform as possible, with the same poses, same backdrop, lighting, whatever. This season was not nearly as uniform as they have been in the past. Some teams went with the plain black background, some had the black to white gradient, and some were just done by the school’s media department. The problem with this is that it’s difficult to make out details of the uniform with some presentations, and others show the details very well, but it’s tough to get the whole picture of the uniform. It’s difficult to punish Nike when a school makes poor promotional photos, so that won’t hurt Nike here.
- Under Armour: Under Armour doesn’t have as many teams as Nike or Adidas under their banner, so it’s a bit easier to control the presentations. Early August saw Under Armour reveal uniforms for five of their teams. Only one of those uniforms were a new design – Cincinnati. The other teams were just being updated to the new template. But it was nice to see some cohesion with all five teams being presented the same way. The stadium backdrop, even with the giant UA logo, is a cool choice. It helped drill home that these are truly football uniforms, not costumes to be worn on a grass field.
- Adidas: Where Under Armour tried to present their uniforms as football uniforms, Adidas did the opposite. For the last few years, Adidas has used extremely loud and busy backdrops. It started as a random set of stripes and shapes, but has evolved to what they call “mantraflage,” with different words and phrases relating to the school is plastered on the background. It’s not as brutal when the color contrasts well with the uniforms, but it’s nearly impossible to concentrate on the design features when they blend in. It’s truly a headache to look at, and the usual gimmicks Adidas adds to the uniforms certainly don’t help. The poses used for these photo shoots don’t do a good job showcasing the details of the uniforms. It’s really hard to get an idea of exactly how the whole uniform will look with this presentation setup.
Improvement from Previous Set
- Nike: Some of the best improvements came from Nike this year. The only thing is, many of the improvements came on top of what Nike provided teams in previous seasons. As I said before, this year’s North Carolina uniforms are one of my favorite sets. But, the previous set Nike revealed a few years ago were easily one of the worst designs. UCONN went from bad helmets and decent uniforms to alright lids and hideous uniforms. Wake Forest, who updated their uniforms for the first time in what seems like a decade, looks wonderful with their new uniforms. San Diego State has one of the more unique elements in the Aztec Calendar being added to the uniforms. But then you have TCU who went completely overboard with their “frog skin” pattern, and applied it to the entirety of the uniform, from head to toe. Not every team improved, but those that did seemed to improve over a pretty bad design from previous years from Nike. The good was good, but the bad was pretty underwhelming.
- Under Armour: As noted above, Under Armour spent most of this year updating their teams to the newest template. Only two teams received brand new designs (Utah will be wearing a throwback design that combines different elements from past uniforms), and both will look pretty good, much better than their previous designs. South Florida has new uniforms that feature a nice stripe design based off their bullhorn logo. Like many Nike teams, these are a big improvement over their last designs, made by Under Armour. USF hasn’t had a wonderful look period in previous years. Cincinnati, on the other hand, changed from Adidas where they had very bland and uninspired uniforms. These new designs finally feature interesting elements and look good on the uniforms.
- Adidas: Where Adidas has faltered in overall design and presentation, their design changes from past years to current uniforms are pretty good. Miami, who ended a 27 year relationship with Nike, never had a wonderful look under the Swoosh. This year’s design for the Hurricanes is a really nice one – Northwestern stripes on the sleeves and pants work very well for Miami. But the design is hurt with the typical games played by Adidas. Arizona State improved upon their design from Nike by making some tweaks to the previous design. Nebraska’s black alternate this year is just a color-swap from last year’s design, which is extremely lazy on Adidas’ part. Texas A&M’s black alternate features some “reflective technology” on the helmet, designed and produced by HydroGraphics, Inc. That’s a cool element, but I feel like it won’t be very noticeable during gameplay. The rest of the uniform is very bland and seemingly just tone-on-tone. Only two of the teams Adidas outfits this season will be an overall improvement from the year before. That doesn’t bode well for Adidas.
When it comes to these off-season redesign projects, quantity is certainly a factor. Nike proved, though, that they can still provide quality designs even with their large number of teams they outfit each season. Under Armour has done a fantastic job of providing each of their teams a unique design that truly embodies the university well, and distancing themselves from the thought of them being a company that designs nothing but wacky costumes. Adidas continues to fall in terms of quality designs, and their attempts to innovate the world of uniforms – whether in designs, gimmicks, or presentation – keeps them from gaining any ground on the other two companies.
Throughout this analysis, I’d have to crown Nike the winner of the summer. I try not to let the quantity of teams affect this, but Nike’s work has been hard to complain about this summer. Under Armour has only released a new design for a few teams, with others just being upgraded to a new template. While those designs have been great, the body of work is just too small to effectively debate that they have replaced Nike at the top. On the other end of the spectrum, Adidas struggled once again to truly put a great product on the field. When the best thing you do all summer is “pretty good, but ruined by the gimmicks Adidas always adds,” it’s hard to get out of the bottom of the rankings.
2015 NCAA Uniform Changes
/0 Comments/by Clint Richardson- The ACC changed logos last year, and teams are already wearing a new conference patch on their jerseys after wearing the new logo last year.
- Boston College – For their game in Fenway against Notre Dame, the Holy War, the BC Eagles will wear some Flutie era throwbacks. The sleeve stripes worn on the 1985 team has been moved to the undershirt sleeves.
- Clemson – a chrome prototype helmet was shown very early in the season. Doubt this will actually hit the field though.
- Duke – After honoring the 1989 ACC championship team with throwback uniforms, Duke is moving on and going back to their Colts-like uniforms. The team has also added some chrome accessoriesto the helmets. Here’s a great look at all three uniforms.
- Florida State – the Seminoles have updated their away jerseys to the new Mach Speed template. The home jerseys were updated last season when the colors where fixed to match better. They also tweaked the helmet decals to where the spears don’t cross in the back anymore unlike last season.
- Georgia Tech – GT has tweaked their previous Russell Athletic uniforms. The shoulder loops were replaced with stripes, the collar now has a blue square at the front with the GT logo, and gold side panels have been added.
- Louisville – Adidas has produced a new “Uncaged” uniform for Louisville to be worn in the Chick-fil-a Kickoff Game against Auburn in Atlanta. The uniforms feature silver chrome-like numbers and shoulder stripes. The helmet has a chrome Old English “L” logo on the right side, and the left side features a very unique cardinal illustration – one that I will refer to as “Laser Chicken” from here on out. An oversized “L” logo is also placed on both hips on the pants. The Cardinals’ other uniforms have also been updated to the new ShockWeb 2.0 template, complete with tire treads, chrome number details, and oversized hip logos. The helmets also feature chrome decals and facemasks.
- Miami – Miami ended a 27 year relationship with Nike, one of the Swoosh’s first big teams, and jumped to Adidas. The new uniforms feature modified Northwestern stripes on the shoulders and pants, with slashes through (adidas’ design of the summer). The shoulder stripes actually have a curved edge to them, which is supposedly referring to the leaves of the palm trees throughout Miami and southern Florida. Rumors of a black alternate, and some kind of another alternate, are in the future. It is odd that Adidas only showcased the default, traditional helmet, when Nike added three other helmets last year. Here’s the original leak of the uniforms from mid-summer.
- North Carolina – One of the best redesigns of the summer, Nike and UNC made a change to make the brand more consistent across all sports. The UNC logo was slightly tweaked and updated. The wonderful argyle pattern that has donned Tar Heel basketball uniforms for years now has now been added to the football uniforms – and in a very classy application at that. The black alternate looks much better than the past rendition. Here’s the previous look for comparison.
- Syracuse – After a complete redesign last season, the Syracuse Orange didn’t even get to wear their main color as a jersey, as they were not available. Those namesake-colored jerseys will be available for the team to mix and match this season.
- Virginia Tech – The Hokies have played around with alternate helmets many times over the last few years, and a new one will be worn this season on September 12 versus Furman for Military Appreciation. The helmet is a clone of the (wonderful) Navy helmet that has been an all-time favorite of mine. Many teams, mainly high school, have tried to pull off this design and not done very well. But these are one of the best designs I’ve seen. Navy still owns this look in my opinion though.
- Wake Forest – Wake Forest has worn the same uniform design since 2006 (granted it feels like much longer), and they finally got a much needed redesign to their football uniforms. The team rolled out three new uniform sets – three helmets, jerseys, and pants. The helmets come in gloss black, matte black, and chrome gold. The pants come in white, gold, and black. The unique part comes with the uniforms, where there is a white top as well as two different black designs. All three jerseys feature a stylized “W” design on the shoulder caps, which draws from the school’s academic logo and some architecture around campus. The white jersey features a gold shoulder cap and W design. One of the black jerseys also features a gold shoulder cap design, whereas the second black top has a black design, which makes it very difficult to make out the W design. The numbers on the jerseys have “angled notches at 18 and 34 degrees at the top and bottom, respectively” to honor the school’s founding in 1834.
- Illinois – The Illini got a redesign last season, but unfortunately didn’t get their blue jerseys then, apparently due to a budget issue. Thankfully they received their blue jerseys this season.
- Maryland – Under Armour revealed new uniformsfor five teams in early August, including Maryland. The reveal touts the use of the newest template, but Maryland was one of the teams wearing the template last season.
- Michigan –Michigan has signed to return to Nike next season, and will become the first team to wear Jordan Brand football uniforms. Harbaugh has said the team will not wear any alternates this season, and the Legends jersey series has been retired. Harbaugh has also considered bringing back pride stickers. The team does have new white jerseys, with striped sleeve cuffs, and a new pair of white pants. Harbaugh did want to have throwback uniforms, and these are the same as the uniforms worn in 1974. The yellow pants have had the block M removed from the front, an element that has been worn since 1993.
- Michigan State – I’ve been a big fan of State’s recent redesign, and I must say, I really like these new uniforms. On the new Nike Mach Speed template, Michigan State’s new uniforms feature a nice Greek pattern on the shoulder caps and (odd) pant stripes. The traditional green helmet now features a beautiful “anodized aluminum finish”, which, according to photos, looks like a mix between the traditional gloss finishes and the new matte helmets. An alternatethat looks a good bit similar to their old Pro Combat uniforms is also in the mix. The Greek pattern dons the shoulder caps again, as well as the MSU initials. Gold shoulder and pant stripes help break up the green uniforms. The gold helmet has a nice “oxidized metal finish”, but the seemingly-oversized green logo seems to get a bit lost.
- Nebraska – continuing adidas’ summer long series of reveals, the Cornhuskers will be wearing an all-black alternate, with a matte black lid. The shockweb template actually has “HUSKERS” detailed into the sides of the jerseys, which is the ultimate Adidas gimmick. The odd thing is that these are the exact same design as last year’s alternate, just with the colors reversed. Shame on you Adidas. That’s extremely lazy.
- Ohio State – A few years ago, Ohio State added buckeye leaves to the back of the collar. Those are seemingly gone for a BUCKEYES wordmark, which seems very out of place. The reasoning was that if anymore championships were won, there wouldn’t be any more room for the buckeye leaves on the collar.
- Penn State – “Black Shoes, Basic Blues” is the mantra for Penn State this season, as they are removing the nameplates that Bill O’Brien added during his time, to help distance the team from the Paterno era. The jerseys have also been updated to a new template.
- Purdue – Purdue has a new grey uniform this season, as well as what seems to be an updated railroad track-striped helmet. Also, a new white helmet, with number on one side and train logo on the other, will also be available. This helmet also features a striped facemask, which seems to be a continuation of the helmet stripe.
- Wisconsin – Rumor is that Wisconsin is looking to leave Adidas after this season and sign with Under Armour next year. Hints have been dropping all summer, but one of the most telling signs is that the football team downgraded jersey templates. According to picture day photos, the team has switched back to an older template, abandoning the TechFit and Shockweb designs. The switch thankfully brings TV numbers back to the shoulders, something that had been missing in previous seasons.
- Baylor – Baylor has a new “gunmetal grey” uniform for this season, which features a new grey helmet, in which the gold BU logo seems to get a bit lost on.
- Kansas – A bad football team that actually looks worse than they play. Kansas has been an absolute mess for years now. The jerseys have been updated the new Adidas Shockweb 2.0 template. Two helmets we’ve seen recently are a white lid with the Jayhawk logo and a blue on with the Jayhawk on one side and the KU logo on the other. During a kids’ camp during the summer, many different helmet designs were also spotted. No word on the legitimacy of these though.
- Kansas State – The Wildcats have finally updated to a newer Nike template. Here are the older ones.
- Oklahoma State – The Cowboys from Stillwater have enjoyed their alternate helmets in the past years, and they have a new white lid with chrome accents.
- Texas – The Longhorns have updated to the Mach Speed template this season.
- TCU – In one of the worst design in recent history, Nike and TCU have revealed some gaudy uniforms that feature their frog skin pattern pretty much from head to toe. A purple and grey pair of jerseys and pants both feature this design. Thankfully, the white set don’t showcase this pattern, except in the numbers and collar. The purple helmet also features the frog skin pattern, which seems much more like a natural fit. A white lid was also shown during the reveal, which seems to be the one they wore last season, except with the frog skin pattern. A full frog skin helmet was shown outside the promo shots, and it’s pretty annoying. All in all, it’s easy to say Nike went way overboard with the frog skin pattern. I understand sticking with something that’s unique to a school, and this pattern certainly is unique to TCU, but c’mon guys, this is ridiculous.
- Arizona State – ASU jumped from Nike to Adidas this offseason to increase the athletic department’s revenue from $2.1 million annually with the Swoosh to $4.2 million with Adidas. The uniforms, on the other hand, are rather similar to what the team wore the last few years with Nike. Some minor changes were expected, but the end result is rather nice, especially with adidas’ recent track record. First noticeable item is the addition of the tiretreads with the Shockweb 2.0 template. You’ll also notice that the ASU on the shoulder caps has been removed, and the pitchfork stripes have been moved towards the sleeve cuffs. The pitchfork logo has also been placed on the pants. A Pat Tillman memorial patch has been added to the collar, which in turn moves the Adidas logo to the chest (where it belongs). A black, white, and maroon version of each uniform were shown in the promo videos, but a gold helmet was shown elsewhere. Overall, it’s a nice tweak on a uniform I already really liked. Unfortunately, adidas’ usual gimmicks hurt the overall look. But, I’ll try and look past that for a while. In addition to the sets revealed here, Adidas has a reported three alternates in the plans for the Sun Devils this season, the first of which will be worn on opening weekend against Texas A&M. These “Desert Ice”uniforms are a white edition of their “Desert Fuel” uniforms from last year, tweaked to match the rest of the Adidas line. The main details – the pitchforks in specific – are much larger than their Nike counterpart. The helmet and pant forksare about double the size in the previous rendition. The number on the other side of the helmet is also way too big, which is the biggest problem with this design – everything is too big. Tone down the sizes of these elements, and you have a good look. But hey, it’s Adidas after all.
- Colorado – Colorado revealed a new set of redesigned uniforms during the summer. The main sets include a gold, black, and white version of each helmet, jersey, and pants. A fourth set includes an all grey/silver look. A cool detail is the flatiron rock-like details that are in the numbers. I like these overall, I’m just saddened to see the Northwestern stripes disappear. I don’t feel like they’d complete these new jerseys, but they certainly wouldn’t be a sore thumb in the design.
- UCLA – Adidas has transitioned the traditional UCLA uniforms to their new Shockweb 2.0 template. Sadly, these look awful. The tire tracks are awful regardless of team. But the theme of adidas’ designs this season was to add unnecessary slashes on any striping and the numbers, which truly ruins this set. UCLA is the prime example of how Adidas loves to ruin a good design. And even when they make a decent design (i.e. Miami), they ruin it with these things – the tire tracks, the slashes, the duct tape-shiny numbers. It’s pitiful. Along with the new home jerseys, UCLA has a new black alternate uniform, like many of the previous seasons. It’s basically last year’s design, just updated to the current template.
- USC – The Trojans have updated their jerseys to the Mach Speed template. There have been rumorsof the Trojans breaking out some alternate uniforms this season or the next. The most detailed description of these alternates involves a bronze helmet and jersey.
- Utah – Under Armour revealed new uniformsfor five teams in early August, including Utah. The reveal touts the use of the newest template, but Utah was one of the teams wearing the template last season. The Utes will also wear throwback uniforms for their homecoming game against Cal, combining various elements from Utah uniforms worn in the past. The interlocking “UU” logo was on the helmets during the 1960s, the number font is from the 1970s, and the stripes on the shoulders and pants were worn from the 1970s to the 1990s. It’s a really nice design – and I really love seeing a logo sitting on top of the shoulder stripes like they used. On top of all this, Utah will also have a new, beautiful satin-finished red helmet.
- Arkansas – No major changes for the Razorbacks this season, as they received a complete rebrand last year, but it does look like the hog on the helmets have been changed to a chrome decal.
- Auburn – Auburn has finally updated to Under Armour’s newest template. The shoulder stripes are larger and no longer truncated, just as the pant stripes no longer come to a point at the knees. The helmets this season will feature metallic finished facemasks and stripes to match how the AU logo has looked for many years now. A more detailed look at the changes can be seen here.
- Kentucky – Kentucky updated their logo over the summer; it’s a small tweak. The football field will now be turf and reflectthe new logo. A new white helmet with chrome decals has been circulating, no word on its legitimacy.
- Mississippi State – The Bulldogs are transitioning their ever-popular DWS 100 Year uniforms from last season to their default home and road uniforms. My friend Paul Sullivan over at the MSU Uniform Tracker has done a lot of great work regarding the upcoming State uniforms. A black edition of the DWS 100 uniforms have basically been confirmed through this Adidas catalogue leak. For more information and different concepts, be sure to check out Paul’s site. After much speculation, the team did add a maroon version of their DWS 100 pants, including the dreaded oversized hip logo. Matching stripes would be such a plus here.
- Ole Miss – Last season, Ole Miss broke out the powder blue helmets for the first time in many years, and then auctioned the helmetsoff after the game. This offseason, during a radio show, Ole Miss’s athletic director stated that they will once again wear the powder blue lids again this season.
- South Carolina – The Gamecocks have updated their black alternate jerseys to match their garnetand white tops. Here’s the previous black top.
- Tennessee switched from Adidas to Nike this season, and Nike did a wonderful job placing the traditional Vols design on their Mach Speed template. The helmet and pants stripes all taper off to a checkerboard design, which I love how they implemented this. The “Smokey” grey alternates are staying, but with a twist. The jerseys feature an anthracite shoulder yoke, which barely contrasts with the Smokey grey. This year, Tennessee has added a grey lid (which was really needed with the last set) that features the same checkerboard stripe. A cool detail with this helmet is the imagery of the Smokey Mountains on the shell. It looks decent in photos, but it’ll be interesting to see how it looks on field.
- Texas A&M – Texas A&M has had their normal uniforms updatedto the new ShockWeb 2.0 template. Another Adidas team to reveal new uniforms is the Aggies of Texas A&M. These uniforms are all black (the blackest they could possibly be, apparently) and feature reflective technology from the guys at HydroGraphics, whatever that means. The helmets looked pretty bad from the reveal, but under the rightlight they look pretty cool. Unfortunately, you can’t dictate the lighting during gametime, so it’ll be pretty brutal on TV. These uniforms are scheduled to be worn on Halloween against South Carolina. If they really wanted to go all out for Halloween, they should’ve added a red nose to complete these clown suits.
- Vanderbilt – Vandy appears to have new white and gold uniforms this season. Each features black shoulder capsthat look to have the anchor logo sublimated within them. These also match the infamous “ANCHOR DOWN” black uniforms of last season. The Commodores also have two new helmets for this season. A black and white matte helmet with an oversized V-star decal and a unique anchor and chain decal going down the middle of the helmet. Here’s a good look at three combinations, with the three helmets Vandy will wear. Along with these changes, there’s a new grey alternate uniform. The pants feature ANCHOR DOWN written down the legs, since we all know they can’t place that on the nameplate anymore. These new alternatesare being called “Deep Water,” and are paired with a really nice helmet that is a dark grey water paint color, with chrome gold anchor decals and facemask.
- Cincinnati – A long-time relationship with Adidas has come to an end, and another Tommy Tuberville team will be wearing Under Armour. Once the contract began, Under Armour revealed a new stripe to go along with the rebranding. That stripe is used throughout the new uniforms the team will wear this season. The helmets, shoulders, collar, and pants all feature this stripe. It looks even better in white!
- Connecticut – Two years ago, UConn revealed a new logo as a part of their rebrand, and with it came one of the more unique football helmets of recent years. This season, the Huskies have a new set of uniforms and a helmetthat replaces the awful “dog eyes” helmet. Unfortunately though, these are extremely plain. The pants and jerseyshave some odd striping that actually seems to resemble the Pepsi logo. The helmet features a red facemask and blue stripe, with a red back bumper. Red seems to be a bit overkill on these uniforms, rather than being an accent color like it used to be. As much as I hate piping on uniforms, I actually thought the last set looked pretty decent. I feel like this new helmet would work better with the old uniforms.
- East Carolina – ECU has updated their black jerseys to the Mach Speed template, and changed a few details. The team also has a new pair of purple pants. According to the equipment team’s twitter account, the purple and black helmets have a satin finish and gold flakes.
- South Florida – USF has revealed one of my favorite redesigns of the offseason. The team revealed two new uniforms, a white and green version, on the new Under Armour template. Each features a stylized stripe down the pants and on the shoulder caps, with the shoulders showcasing a bull horn from the main logo. They also showcased five different helmet designs, all of which are from past years. Also shown were the “Irish Rainbow” uniforms that were worn last year. All three uniforms make this one of the best looking USF teams of recent years.
- Tulane – Tulane has added chrome green facemasks to their helmets this season.
- Tulsa – Tulsa has a new white helmet to go with their billion other helmet designs.
- Louisiana Tech – LaTech has a new turf field design. It’s nice to see the uniform stripes featured on the field, but the placement is a bit odd.
- North Texas – The Mean Green has revealed a new set of home uniforms and helmets. The uniforms feature two stripes around the sleeves, which come to a gradient finish similar to the old Arizona uniforms. They also have a shoulder loop stripe, which just compounds the look. One or the other would look fine, but not together. The helmets got a new, darker finish that looks great. The black helmets feature a Seahawks style stripe on the top, which once again makes the entire look a bit too much.
- Old Dominion – After wearing Nike uniforms for their first few seasons in FBS football, Old Dominion has made the change over to Under Armour uniforms. Here’s a slightly better photo of the new uniforms.
- UTSA – The Roadrunners have two new helmets this season, each feature a matte finish, white and dark grey, a chrome orange stripe and logo decal, and chrome orange facemask, with one fading to white at the bottom.
- Middle Tennessee – The leader in offseason prototype designs, MTSU equipment managers love to play around with new designs. I’ve always enjoyed seeing what they come up with, and of course, some are better than others. Instead of posting each one individually, here’s a gallery of them.
- Southern Miss – The Eagles have a new set of uniforms that are a massive upgrade over their last set. The new uniforms feature grey numbers andshoulder caps, on both the white and black jerseys. They’re pretty plain, but after their fiasco of uniforms the last few years, anything is an upgrade. Hopefully they add a gold jersey and pants at some point.
- Ball State – Ball State has a new logo, which the only change is the removal on the motion strokes behind the bird head. Their new turf field showcases the new logo. The football team has introduced six new helmet designs for the season. They can be seen in this video.
- Bowling Green – Bowling Green switched from Adidas to Nike this offseason, and of course some new Mach Speed uniforms were revealed. The change brought the return of the brown jerseys, something that had been missing for many years. The design of the uniforms are very simple, with contrasting shoulder caps (white on brown and orange jerseys, brown caps on the white top) and FALCOLNS written down the pant leg. I see the orange jersey as being much better than the brown top, but I know many fans are just happy that those are back in the rotation.
- Central Michigan – CMU has changed from maroon to yellow facemasks.
- Eastern Michigan – EMU has a new set of away uniformsthat feature chrome eagle wings on the shoulder and diamond-plate numbers. The Eagles will also wear “patriotic uniforms” during their game against Army on September 26th. The jerseys feature and American flag across the shoulder yoke and a giant E logo on the chest above the number. To add to these new uniforms, EMU will wear a third uniform to honor track and field coach Bob Parks, with track uniform inspired football uniforms.
- Massachusetts – One of the newest FBS teams, UMass has worn a few different uniforms. This season’s design feature a white, red, and grey set of jerseys and pants. The uniforms feature a Northwestern stripe, with the jersey stripes being thinner than the pants, and the pant stripes truncated halfway down the legs. The back of the jerseys feature a state outline as well as nameplates, which seems awfully cluttered.
- Miami (OH) – A table set up at a recruiting event early this summer showcases a few concept Miami helmets. The two eagle head helmets (one white, one chrome) look really nice.
- Northern Illinois – After a contest over the summer, fans have decided on a new turf design that features a shadowed Illinois state. The team will also be wearing some nice throwbacks this season. In an attempt to throwback to the 1965 team, NIU will be wearing black helmets with red and white stripes and player numbers on the side, a red jersey with NI on the shoulder caps, white pants, and NFL-style socks that include some nice stripes.
- Western Michigan – The Broncos have new “Row the Boat” white jerseys, a slogan used by the head coach.
- Air Force – The Air Force Academy has updated to Nike’s newest Mach Speed template and looks fantastic. The team has struggled to find a great uniform identity over the last few seasons, but these are exactly how I’ve always imaged Air Force to look on the gridiron. It’ll be interesting to see what helmets of years past that the teams wears this season, or if they break out any new designs. Air Force is one of the very few teams I’ve always thought could perfectly pull off the grey uniforms, so it would be nice to see some grey return back to these uniforms.
- Boise State – Some recruits showed off the helmets and jerseys of years past. As you can see, there’s still no consistency with these uniforms. The team did wear some nice helmets for their spring game that features their B logo rather than the horse head logo. The team has come out and said that these were only for the spring game, and won’t be worn during the season, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing something more along these lines this year.
- Hawaii – The return of the Rainbow Warriors to the gridiron calls for new uniforms, unfortunately with zero rainbows. The new uniforms, updated to Under Armour’s newest template, feature a Hawaiian floral design on the shoulder caps and pants, which happens to be the first set of pants Under Armour has produced for NCAA competition with full sublimation. It’s also the first time silver pants will be worn since the 2007 season.
- New Mexico – The Lobos have updated their white and red uniforms to Nike’s new Mach Speed template. They have a new black jersey, albeit on an older template. They also have a new matte black helmet, and what seems to be a camo pattern inside the decal on their grey lids.
- San Diego State – The Aztecs have new Mach Speed uniformsand helmets showcasing the Aztec calendar pattern. The helmet, shoulder caps, and pants each feature this pattern. It’s a unique idea and execution of it. I really like the helmets, just hope it’s not overkill when the team hits the field.
- UNLV – The award for the Most Comical Uniform Reveal goes to UNLV. The team posted photos online that featured Photoshop templates that are available online. I’ve seen amateur designers provide more professional concepts than what UNLV revealed these on. They didn’t just use one Photoshop template, but two! I understand possibly not having the uniforms on hand to showcase, but there’s much much better ways to showcase anything, especially uniforms. As for the designs themselves, they too could be much better. The helmets look great, and actually feature the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegassign on the back. The silver lid features a nice chrome red facemask. The jerseys each feature grey numbers and lettering, which look to be illegal on the black jerseys, even with the red outline, but don’t look so bad when seen on the real thing. The UNLV rebel logo is featured on the shoulder caps of each uniform. The pants are the weirdest part for me. The white pants have LAS VEGAS written up the pant leg, which actually looks upside-down to me. The black and red pants have the star design from the Las Vegas sign. Each look awfully high school-ish. As displeasing as the uniforms may be, the new turf for UNLV looks mighty awesome, continuing the team’s usage of the Las Vegas sign.
- Appalachian State – The Mountaineers have revealed a brand new yellow uniform, and I absolutely love it. It’s not often you see shoulder stripes with a logo over them on anymore. Not a huge fan of the Missouri rip-off pants, but the black pants make this a strong uniform.
- Louisiana-Lafayette – One of the early summer reveals, UL-Lafayette revealed an oversized fleur de lis logo on the helmet, which looks pretty good. Oddly, we haven’t seen anything else out of Lafayette since this photo. No photo, but the team will wear “Lafayette Strong” decals to honor the victims of the movie theater shooting in July.
- South Alabama – USA is another team to update to the Mach Speed template.
- Troy – The Troy Trojans have revealed three new uniform sets – red, white, and grey – and at least three new helmets – chrome white with chrome red facemask, matte red, and a classic glossy black. The uniforms are very inconsistent, with the red jersey having the T sword logo on the shoulders, the grey jersey has the Troy shield logo, and the white tops have an odd stripe style. The pants also feature the same inconsistencies. And to make things worse, these are all set on the Adidas Shockweb template.
- Army – An offseason rebrand of the entire athletic department, the Army teams will now be referred to as Army West Point. Rumors of dropping the Cadet nickname were false. Army joins the long list of teams this season that will be wearing the new Mach Speed template from Nike. New black and white jerseys are available with black, white, and gold pants. Gone is the stylized A logo, and in is a new shield logo featuring an old Spartan-style helmet (looks more like a Michigan State logo than Army to me).
- Notre Dame – The Fighting Irish have updated to the new Under Armour template. The team also revealed a new Shamrock Series uniform, to be worn in Fenway Park against Boston College. The Irish will wear mono-green uniforms with Seahawks-style chest stripes. The stripes on the chest and pants have eleven slashes through them, to represent the eleven national championships. The helmet is the traditional golden dome lid but with a new chrome leprechaun decalon the sides, a blue and green stripe down the middle, and a blue and green facemask split right down the middle.
- Bethune-Cookman – BC has revealed new jerseys and a new helmet.
- Charleston – New home jerseys and white pants give the Golden Eagles some new combination options.
- Citadel – The Citadel Bulldogs have enjoyed playing around with alternate uniforms, and this season they have a new black alt, dubbed “The Black Nights of the Ashley River.” The Ashley River runs through Charleston and right by the Citadel campus. Here’s a good photo of each combination. That black on grey combo is brutal.
- Dayton – Dayton unveiled a new logo last year, and this year the team has anew set of uniforms.
- Delaware – after a few years of wearing Under Armour uniforms, Delaware football has switched over to the Adidas banner. The new uniforms feature plain blue jerseys and yellow pants, just on the ShockWeb template. The winged helmets stay the same.
- East Tennessee State – The ETSU Buccaneers will be playing their first season of football since being shut down in 2003, so of course they have a new set of uniforms.
- Elon – Elon has updated their old uniforms to a set that includes some nice UCLA stripes.
- Georgetown – It’s always nice to see teams use their unique patterns on their uniforms, much like UNC and their argyle. Georgetown has always enjoyed using their kente-cloth pattern on their basketball uniforms, but they’ve finally added it to the football uniforms. The pattern dons the helmet stripe and the shoulder caps on their new Mach Speed uniforms. The pants legs have HOYA SAXA written down the legs.
- Harvard – The Crimson have a new set of uniformsfrom Nike for this years. The wardrobe includes a new matte red helmet with black H, a red, black, and white jersey, and a red and cream pair of pants. They wore these uniforms last season.
- Howard – A team known for using a rip-off Buffalo Bills logo for many years finallyhas their own set of logos. The football uniforms have also been updated. Here’s a new helmet for this season.
- Jackson State – A new matte helmet with chrome decals has appeared for JSU, but I honestly think it’s just a fan-made helmet.
- James Madison – The Dukes have updated to the Mach Speed templateand have an all purple option for this season.
- Kennesaw State – 2015 is the Kennesaw State Owls’ first season of football. The uniforms this season will have a special inaugural season patch. The team will have black, white, and yellow pants and jerseys to mix and match. The team went through many prototype helmets, but looks to have settled on a yellow lid. I’m still not sure exactly what the stripe is, but I believe it’s to resemble the owl wings from the logo.
- Lamar – The Cardinals have revealed a new set of uniforms for the upcoming season. The shoulder caps have an interesting vertical stripe. Along with the new uniforms, the team has a new black helmet that features the team name down the back of the stripe.
- Montana State – The Montana State Bobcats have new jerseys and helmets this season that allow them to wear 16 different combinations. The twitter account actually revealed each combination over a series of days. Here’s all the uniforms in one photo. The team has their traditional gold lid, a blue helmet, and a brand new white alternate helmet.
- Nicholls State – The Colonels out of Louisiana have returned back to their silver helmets after wearing matte silver/grey lids last season. Great move.
- Norfolk State – The Spartans have a new jersey as well as a really nice, shiny helmet.
- North Carolina Central – A chrome maroon helmet was showcased early this summer for the Eagles. The team also has a new jerseydesign, as showcased at MEAC media days, as well as another new helmet.
- North Dakota – The overshadowed football team from North Dakota has a nice new matte green helmet. Here’s a look at the new uniforms with the new helmets.
- Presbyterian – The Blue Hose have a new set of Adidas uniforms. I love the look of their helmets with the chrome decals.
- Samford – A team that always wore on of my favorite designs , has decided to move from that and wear a modified Nike-Miami uniform. The team will have new white, blue, and red uniforms, with contrasting shoulder caps and details. The helmets seem to have changed to a matte finish with a new red stripe.
- Tennessee Tech – The Golden Eagles have a new matte purple helmet with an oversized decal. They revealed a chrome version last year; not sure if they wore that. They did wear thischrome helmet though.
- UT- Chattanooga – The Mocs have switched from Russell Athletics to Adidas and have some new uniforms to showcase the change. The uniforms are on adidas’ Shockweb template and have the infamous tire treads across the chest and shoulders. The uniforms are pretty basic, but look good nonetheless, especially with last season’s uniforms having some interesting striping. Unfortunately, Chattanooga will be sticking with one helmet, as per the promo photos. I’ve always enjoyed UTC’s look, and I’d love to see some throwback helmet designs for the team. I’ve always thought a yellow lid with a train logo would be a great look.
- Youngstown State – The Penguins have a new Under Armour jerseyfor this season.
- Ashland – The Eagles of Ashland University have a new purple chrome helmetfor this upcoming season.
- Colorado School of Mines – The Orediggers have a new set of uniforms. They wore these last year.
- Colorado Mesa – The Mavericks have a new set of uniformsfrom Under Armour. The helmet shown has two different decalson either side. They wore theselast year.
- Florida Tech – The Panthers have a new set of white, red, and grey Adidas ShockWeb uniforms.
- Jacksonville – The Jacksonville Dolphins have a great new helmet for this season. The shell has gold flakes painted on. The stripe fades from gold in the front to grey to green in the back. The only drawback is that the player numbers are on one side, while an oversized JU logo is on the other. Two normal sized decals would make this a wonderful design. The Dolphins have worn a glossy and matte version of a green lid with a normal sized JU logo. Here’s a look at the uniforms with the helmets.
- Tiffin – Tiffin University out of Ohio will have a new gold chromehelmet. The white lid is what the team wore last year.
- West Alabama – The Tigers have revealed a new set of uniforms, which includes two jerseys (white and red), and four pairs of pants (white, red, black, and what looks to be a camo pair). The team wore these uniforms last season
- West Florida – The Argonauts of West Florida have revealed a new helmet design for their inaugural football season in 2016. Here’s the uniformsthat will accompany the new helmets.
